Introduction This is a FAQ for the DS game Game & Watch Collection. It contains information on how to play the games, a FAQ, and a mini-review. ******************************************************************************* II. Getting Started ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Game Select On the Title Screen, your bottom screen will have a list of the three games as well as an Alarm Set icon. You can scroll through these with the control pad, then press A to select (or you can just tap the one you want with the stylus). After choosing a game, the top screen will display that game's control scheme while the bottom screen is your Mode Select screen. On the Mode Select screen, you'll see boxes for Game A, Game B, Time, and Back. The high score for each mode is also displayed here. Press left/right to select a game mode, Game A is for beginners, Game B is a harder version of Game A. Press the A button to begin playing. Pressing the X button brings up the Time Display, while pressing B takes you back to the Title Screen (you also have the option of making your selection with the stylus). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Memory Clear To clear the game card's memory, hold down the A, B, X, Y, L, and R buttons as the game starts up. ******************************************************************************* III. Watch/Alarm Choosing Alarm Set on the Title Screen allows you to set the alarm using the control pad. When the alarm sounds, it can be stopped by pressing select or tapping the Alarm Stop icon with the stylus. Choosing Time from any of the three games' Mode Select screens will enable Watch Mode. A demo of the game will play and the current time will be displayed. Press A, B, or Start to return to the Mode Select screen. ******************************************************************************* IV. Oil Panic ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Controls Control Pad Move attendant left/right, dump bucket A Button Move attendant right, dump bucket Y Button Move attendant left, dump bucket Start Pauses game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Gameplay The object of the game is to catch the leaking oil in your bucket. Your bucket can hold up to three drops of oil. There is an NPC carrying an oil drum on the balcony below. By moving to the windows on the far left/right, you can dump your bucket into the oil drum by pressing left/right on the control pad. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Mistakes There are three different types of "mistakes" you can make in Oil Panic. When you make three mistakes on either screen, your game is over. Upper Screen Mistakes: - Missing a drop of oil. - Trying to catch a drop of oil in a full bucket. Bottom Screen - Dumping your bucket onto a customer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Scoring Catching a drop of oil 1 point Dumping bucket into oil drum 1 point per drop Bonus for dumping full bucket 2 points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Bonuses If you reach 300 or 1300 points, all mistakes will be cleared. If you reach 300 or 1300 points without making any mistakes, you will enter Fever Mode. In Fever Mode, a second NPC with another oil drum will appear. The two NPCs will remain stationary outside each window and any points awarded for dumped oil will be doubled. Fever Mode will end after thirty seconds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Strategies - Whenever possible, wait until your bucket is full before dumping it. - As you approach every 100 points (100, 200, 300, etc.) the game will speed up, once you reach the mark, gameplay will then slow back down. - Use your mistakes, with correct play you can make five mistakes before your game ends. For example, if you have two mistakes on the top screen and only one on the bottom, it's better to empty your bucket onto a customer than allow the third mistake on the top screen to end your game! ******************************************************************************* V. Donkey Kong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Controls Control Pad Move rescuer, activate crane A Button Jump, make rescuer appear in starting position Start Pauses game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Gameplay The object of the game is to guide your rescuer safely to the top of the construction site, activate the crane (by pressing left on the control pad), then jumping onto the hook (with A, NOT by pressing right), to remove one of the wires supporting Donkey Kong's platform. Once you have removed all four wires, Donkey Kong will tumble to the ground and you win! Then you get to do it all over again ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Mistakes There are four different types of "mistakes" you can make. When you make a mistake you lose a rescuer, lose all of your rescuers and your game is over. Mistakes: - Being hit by a barrel. - Jumping and hitting your head on a girder. - Being hit by the moving girder. - Jumping for the hook and missing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Scoring Jumping over a barrel 1-2 points Removing a wire 5-20 points Dumping Donkey Kong 20 points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Bonuses When you reach 300 or 1300 points, you will be given an extra rescuer. If you reach 300 or 1300 points without making a single mistake, you'll also enter Fever Mode. In Fever Mode, all points awarded are doubled. Fever Mode will last until you make a mistake. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Strategies - Watch the moving girders on the second level, make sure you are not under one when a barrel is approaching. - While on the ladder leading up to the top screen, you are safe from any barrels, but you can still be killed by the moving girders. - Activate the crane by pressing left while you are standing next to the switch. - When the crane is activated, the hook will start at the far left and move right, then swing left one more time. - Once the crane is activated, Donkey Kong will concentrate on the RIGHT side of the screen, you'll need to wait for an opening to jump onto the hook. - You can only reach the hook when it is to the far left. Be sure to JUMP using A, if you press right you'll drop to your doom. - Be patient! ******************************************************************************* VI. Green House ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Controls Control Pad Moves your character A Button Use spray can Start Pauses game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Gameplay The object of the game is to protect the flowers from the inchworms and spiders. You have an unlimited supply of bug spray to ward off the critters, on puff of spray will kill an inchworm and drive a spider up the web one place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Mistakes Allowing an inchworm or spider to reach a flower is a "mistake". After three mistakes, your game is over. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Scoring Killing inchworm 1 point Killing inchworm one space from flower 2 points Killing inchworm when closest to flower 3 points Making a spider retreat one space 1 point Making a spider retreat completely 3 points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Bonuses Your mistake icons will be cleared when you reach each 300 point level (300, 1300, 2300, ...). If you reach a 300 point level without making any mistakes, you will enter Fever Mode. In Fever Mode, all points awarded are doubled. Fever Mode will last until you make a mistake. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Strategies - In the early going, it's actually better to let the inchworms get close to the flowers before killing them so you can earn extra points. - When a spider appears, wait for the next inchworm to appear and kill it BEFORE heading down the ladder. - When attacking a spider, quickly shoot FOUR times to ensure it's taken care of. - Prioritize. Take care of all enemies on a screen before moving up/down the ladder. While moving on the ladder be aware of which flower is in the most danger so you can head that way first. - You have unlimited ammo, so keep pumping that spray can! ******************************************************************************* VII. Game Review Game & Watch Collection is a DS game that is available only as a reward to Club Nintendo members. It is a compilation of three classic Game & Watch games: Oil Panic, Donkey Kong, and Green House. Each game is a faithful port of the original, even the watch/alarm features are included! The game comes with a manual and standard DS case, this was a pleasant surprise, I was expecting a cardboard sleeve like the Metroid Prime demo. Oil Panic is the simplest of the three games. The object here is to catch the dripping oil in a bucket, then empty the bucket into a barrel that is being carried by an NPC. This is my least favorite of the three. Donkey Kong is based on the arcade game. The game has only one stage, it's sort of like a cross between the girder and rivet stages. The object is to avoid the barrels as you make your way to the top, then activate a crane so you can swing over to the wires supporting Donkey Kong's platform. Once you've removed all three wires, he'll come crashing down and you win. Then you start all over again. Green House seems to be based on the obscure Donkey Kong 3. The object is to keep worms and spiders away from your flowers using a can of bug spray. This game is my favorite, the action is fast paced and it's a challenge to keep an eye on both screens at once! All three games are fun, but get old pretty quickly. The fact that the card saves your high scores does add a bit to the replay value, but not much. Still I do feel that the game was worth the 800 coins, so I'm satisfied! Pros + It's free! + Gives gamers a chance to play three classic games. + Game saves your high scores. + I think the song on the title screen is catchy. + Makes a good collector's item. Cons - The games are VERY simple, most gamers will get bored quickly. - Only includes three games. - The watch/alarm feature is kind of redundant, since the DS already has one. ******************************************************************************* IX. Frequently Asked Questions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Game & Watch Collection? Game & Watch Collection is a compilation of three classic Game & Watch games for the Nintendo DS. The three games included are Oil Panic, Donkey Kong, and Green House. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is a Game & Watch? Game & Watch was the line of portable LCD games produced by Nintendo from 1980 to 1991. Each Game & Watch contained a single game as well as a watch/alarm feature. Check out Wikipedia for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_%26_watch ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I get Game & Watch Collection? "Officially" the only way to get this game is by being a member of Club Nintendo and earning 800 coins. Of course you can also find copies online at places like Amazon and eBay for around $30. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Club Nintendo and how do I earn coins? Club Nintendo is the successor to My Nintendo. If you have a My Nintendo account, you can just log in and upgrade it to a Club Nintendo account. You earn coins by registering 1st party Nintendo products in the Earn Coins section of Club Nintendo. You will need the PIN included in the game inserts (usually on the back of a Nintendo Power advertisement) and will be asked to take a brief survey. Wii games typically earn you 50 coins and DS games 30 coins, however, not all games are eligible. For more information go to https://club.nintendo.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do I earn 30 coins for ordering this? No. Game & Watch Collection does NOT come with a registration PIN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is it worth 800 coins? In my opinion, yes. While it may not seem like much considering you have to buy $800 worth of Nintendo products, you were going to buy those games anyway, so the free gift is a nice bonus. At the time of this writing, Game & Watch Collection is the ONLY video game you can spend your coins on (in North America). Undoubtedly more games will be available in the future, but as of right now I do feel that Game & Watch Collection is the best use of your Club Nintendo coins. Besides, if you don't like it you can always just put it on eBay. ******************************************************************************* X.
