INTRODUCTION ======================================= I'm a fan of Square's Job system implemented in many of its Final Fantasy games, especially Blue Mages; one of my favorite challenges in each game is mastering (or simply using) the Ninja job's Dual Wield skill. In FFTA2 this skill is taught by the Katana-class sword Rengetsu-denbu, and is a rare find. In my research for my second pass through the game, I have been attempting to acquire the aforementioned sword as quickly as possible for my all-Hume clan that uses Dual Wield. I thought this information could be useful to others replaying the game and reaching for similar goals. Nothing like a bringing a group of five swords-crossed paladins, fighters, & soldiers with their blue mage swashbuckling support caster to strike fear in the heart of any who wish to dare a Counter against me. :P --------------------------------------- ======================================= B. WHY DUAL WIELD? ======================================= The Dual Wield Passive Ability (or P-Ability), in allowing you to wield two one-handed weapons, causes your normal attacks (and in many cases, your A-Abilities) to double in power. It also works with the Flurry family of opportunity commands to greatly increase your damage; a Flurry attacks twice with all of your equipped weapons. In this sense, you actually hit four times; twice with each weapon! Dual Wielding is also useful for learning new abilities. That will be covered in Section C: AP and You. Dual Wield works well as a deterrent as well; with a suitable R-Ability such as Counter or Bonecrusher, your character will hit BACK with both weapons as well. However, you do not have the ability to equip a shield while using two weapons, leaving jobs with high natural evasion (such as Thieves and ninja for example) to avoid attacks, and high natural defense (such as paladin) to absorb the hits. It's a trade of play style from defensive to offensive, and with its rarity and high AP cost, may not be suitable for all or any of your Hume characters. I recommend trying it, and this guide will help you get one so you can try it. --------------------------------------- ======================================= C. GETTING STARTED - AP AND YOU ======================================= This is an general overview of the AP system as used in FFTA2. If you are fairly comfortable with the ability learning, skip ahead to section D. ---------------- In order to become a Ninja to learn Dual-Wield, a clanner must know four active Thief A-Abilities. In order to learn A-Abilities, a clanner must equip a weapon that contains an ability they do not currently already possess. As your clan completes quests each character will receive a certain amount of AP depending on the quest. For example, if you complete Campaign quest 5, Wanted: Ugohr, you will receive 80 Ability Points (AP). These points are added evenly to all equipment abilities on your clan members. In the previous example we added 80 AP to our clanner's equipment abilities. Let's say that our newly recruited Hume thief 'Gheed' has no abilities, and has two items equipped: a Chainmail which teaches the Reactive Ability, otherwise known as an R-ability, 'Counter' for 150 AP; and a Scramasax which teaches the A-Ability 'Steal Loot Lv. 1' for 100 AP. Gheed, since he is lower level, decided to sit this battle out. He still receives the same amount of AP as everyone else in the clan, even the ones who actually fought in the battle. He gains 80 AP to each equipped Ability; 80 AP to his Scramasax and 80 to his Chainmail. Gheed now needs 70 more AP to finish learning Counter. Once he has learned the Ability (notated by stars where the progress bar was) he can remove the Chainmail and still use Counter. The same is true for the Loot Level 1 he's been learning from the Scramasax; 70 AP is needed to learn 'Counter', and 20 to learn 'Loot Lv. 1'. The advantage to dual wielding I mentioned earlier comes into play here. If Gheed was wielding TWO Scramasax for that quest, he gains 80 AP for EACH weapon- giving him 160 AP learned toward that ability, and finishing it. Gheed can now, thanks to Dual Wield, use Loot Lv. 1 in half the time. If, instead, he wielded a Scramasax and a Kard, he would have 80 AP to 'Loot Lv. 1' and 80 AP to 'Steal Items', allowing the learning of two abilities at once. As you can see, this is effective for not just melee jobs like ninja and paladin, but magic casters can wield two magic-boosting rods or hammers to enhance their spells, or learn spell abilities twice as fast. --------------------------------------- ======================================= D. GETTING STARTED ======================================= As this is not a comprehensive guide to the game, I'm going to stick to the bones of what we need to progress. Complete the story Campaign missions up to Campaign 5: Wanted:Ugohr. Campaign missions 4 & 5 introduce you to Adelle, who although a pain personality-wise she is a major cog in our plan. --------------------------------------- Wanted: Ugohr (8, Campaign 5) -> Reward: Adelle joins you. --------------------------------------- Adelle comes pre-equipped with Loot Lv. 1, and since it's a likelihood that a Scramasax isn't available by the time she joins your team she will play a big role in Stealing Loot to make the four Thief daggers available. In order to unlock the final sword however, you will need to have at least completed Campaign mission 10: Grounded! and have access to Fluorgis and the second continent. ----------------- There IS a way to do it without going to Fluorgis, but be prepared to do some waiting. However, if you're planning to camp out at the Graszton Auction House go until Campaign 7: Now That's a Fire! and check out Section L: The Sword. --------------------------------------- ======================================= J. THE THIEF ======================================= You'll want to get Scramasax as soon as possible to assist Adelle with acquiring Loot Lv. 1. Note that you can achieve all four Thief prerequisite skills with E level items from the Bazaar, giving us access to the Ninja job fairly quickly with only 700 AP. --------------------------------------- Shopping List for Thief Daggers: Gikhet Lead x2 Xergis Tin x2 Snake Skin x1 Animal Bone x1 Pointed Horn x1 Insect Husk x1 Tiny Mushrooms x1 Cactus Fruit x1 Ball Moss x1 Malboro Vine x1 --------------------------------------- Gil 200 AP Jackknife Items 200 AP Kard Loot 1 100 AP Scramasax Loot 2 200 AP Rondel ---------------- 700 AP to Ninja --------------------------------------- ======================================= K. THE NINJA ======================================= 700 AP down, 990 to go. Since the Ninja job is open to all Humes with the prerequisite 4 Thief A-Abilites, now all you need is the mighty Rangetsu-denbu and dual wielding will be a staple P-ability for your Humes. --------------------------------------- Rangetsu-Denbu (S:Dual Wield) 990 AP Sharp-Edged Katana (A): 12000g Gun Gear Low Arcana Screamroot --------------------------------------- ======================================= L. THE SWORD ======================================= There are a few ways to acquire it; the Graszton AH, a speed battle quest with House Bowen, or the Shop Bazaar. --------------------------------------- AUCTION HOUSE: Graszton (Campaign 7) It is possible to win a Rangetsu-denbu in the Graszton Auction House, once you have become Champion for Life in the Graszton House. You can only achieve this by winning all four auction areas in the Graszton House. I'm fairly certain you can't do this your first auction. Once it's over, stay in Lezaford's Cabin for 200 days. Make sure you save your game before you enter the auction month; if the sword isn't there as the Grand Prize, reset or turn off the power and keep checking until it is there. Then all you have to do is win all four houses again. ... Note: the Swordbreaker and Cinquedea for Loot 3 & 4 can also be won in the Camoa auction house as regular loot once you have championed it. ---------or--------- QUEST: House Bowen A treasure chest in this quest contains the sword. Make sure you have examined all the treasures in the map before finishing the battle. --------------------------------------- House Bowen (30, Campaign 10) In order to accept this quest, you must have completed the Klestra questline (Showdown) as well as be champions of Saint D'alsa Bluffs in the Fluorgis Auction House. ---------or--------- --------------------------------------- BAZAAR: Sharp-edged Katana (A) Gun Gear x1 Low Arcana x1 Screamroot x1 --------------------------------------- The easiest way to go about the bazaar method is by quest reward, since there is no guarantee what exact loot you will have available due to questlog completion progress and using said loot on other items. A Loot table with all the necessary loot and where it can be stolen is included at the end of this guide if these quests are already completed or unavailable. ---------------- Wanted: Gilmunto (12, Campaign 6) -> Reward: 1330g, Succulent Fruit x3 -> It's the Thought (7, Succulent Fruit x1) -> Reward: 1120g, Gun Gear x2 ---------------- Mountain Watch (20, Campaign 9) -> Reward: 2450g, Gemsteel x3, Spiral Incisor x3 -> Wanted: Florah (21) -> Reward: 4010g, Rabbit Tail x4, Screamroot ---------------- Grounded! (21, Campaign 10) -> Reward: 4780g, Aqua Galac x2, Red Geeps x2 -> Wanted: Tonberrion (23) -> Reward: 3190g, Low Arcana x5 -------------------- Note: This method also provides three Spiral Incisors, which are a part of the combination necessary for the Jambiya and Cinquedeas; very helpful if you are going to be mastering the Thief class as well. --------------------------------------- Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a new katana; using the Loot table provided in the next section, Appendices and Tables (Section Xvi specifically) you can acquire more Rangetsu-denbu and learn the skill more quickly on each clanner, or teach it to multiple members at once. Where you go from here is up to you, but wherever you end up, you'll control your destiny with both hands. Good luck, and happy hunting! --------------------------------------- ======================================= X.
