INTRODUCTION ......................................................... *INTRO ================================================================================ + - x The good, the bad and the pretty x - + + The good + ------------ + Find a new outfit and you can choose to wear it or not: the outfits give no bonuses so it's purely a cosmetic decision: which do you like best? + Find a new sword or bow and damage from all swords or bows is increased, so you can use whichever weapon you like with no detrimental effect. + You can revisit any stage after completing it from the game *hub* the Ring of Stones. This allows you to obtain missing collectibles and some of the battle challenge trophies without starting a new game. + If you revisit an area you can skip cutscenes: press start and then X. You can also bypass the triplet puzzles by pressing square. Some treasure chests you've already opened will give you 30 coins instead. + You can select the difficulty and change it as often as you like during the game. + Merida casts a shadow and this acts like a spot marker to see where she will land when making awkward jumps to small platforms. + If she falls Merida will be returned to the point just before she fell so you can try again. Even if all her health is gone it's not game over, and she'll be revived close by. The auto-save feature shows as a small circle on screen and marks the way point to which Merida is returned if she faints. + If you have to quit the game during a stage you can continue from the last auto-save point. When you reload select "Continue" to return to that point. - The bad - ----------- - If you finish the game and restart it you lose all your collectibles: outfits, swords, bows, and all upgraded skills. This means that to earn the trophy for playing the game on the hardest difficulty you have to go through the whole game again, starting from scratch. There is no *new game plus*. - The camera is fixed and sometimes the angle is wrong or the area is too far away or dark to see clearly. - The Coop Wisp is controlled by a second player in co-op mode and has its own upgrades. It's not *coop*, it's co-op, and you cannot use it in single player mode, so that means all the *Coop* upgrades are useless for a single player. - The game does not show your progress in achieving the challenge trophies, so you won't know how close you are to getting a trophy for using specific attacks. All you can do is keep repeating the same attack until the trophy pops up. x The pretty x -------------- x Actually the game is beautiful to look at and the music is lovely too! Merida is really cute and her comments during the game are very engaging. ================================================================================ II. HINTS AND TIPS ...................................................... *TIPS ================================================================================ * If playing the game as a single player DO NOT buy the *Coop Wisp* upgrades from the merchant (unless you want to buy them to achieve a trophy.) These are only applicable if a second player is controlling the Wisp. * Do not buy the slam attack upgrade until you have plenty of gold to spare. It does not lead to a trophy and you're better off using other attacks as often as possible to gain trophies. * In some minor boss battles you can back away and stay out of harm's way. Use this feature to your advantage and shoot arrows to kill far-off enemies even if you miss collecting all the coins they drop. * Defeat enemies without taking damage to acquire will-o-the-wisps. These are blue lights that surround Merida and give you a chance to perform a critical hit with bonus damage. * Damaging enemies and taking damage yourself fills up an orb. Once full press circle to activate the power attack during a battle for a short time. It's best to acquire this upgrade as soon as possible and keep using it or it will take a long time to get the relevant trophy. * Watch for Merida's shadow when jumping to see exactly where to land. Many jumps require a double jump : press X and then X again. * If you want to change Merida's outfit or her sword and bow you can do so at the merchant at any cleansed waystone: select Equipment to view the sub menu of outfits, swords and bows. Her appearance will change on screen. * Use a second controller to play the game in co-op mode. One player controls Merida and the other controls the Wisp. It has a very nice feature where you can press triangle and warp to Merida. That means avoiding tricky jumping and a less experienced (or child) gamer can enjoy the game without worrying about not keeping up. * This walkthrough is based on a solo player Brave mode game with boss strategies to help you win. Play on other modes if you wish and everything will be much easier. You can change the difficulty on the fly, even during a boss battle! ================================================================================ IV. THE WALKTHROUGH ..................................................... *WALK ================================================================================ *Many a mickle makes a muckle* -------------- TRAINING STAGE -------------- Royal Gown/Guard Outfit Training Sword Training Bow Earth Charm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The training stage instructs you on the game basics and controls as well as providing you with your equipment. There are coins to collect from breaking the scenery and Merida often remarks about the need for cash during the game. Many a mickle makes a muckle means: many small amounts accumulate to make a large amount. Don't neglect the small stuff! This stage is all very straightforward and there are no enemies to fight but here's the rundown anyhow! After loading the game for the first time you'll be asked to make a save file. The game automatically saves your progress and you can only have one save file per player. Next, you're asked to select the difficulty. If are going for trophies then you should select Brave, the hardest difficulty, and keep that selection for the whole of the game to gain the trophy. Otherwise you'll have to replay the game to win that trophy. You're given the option of two outfits - the [ROYAL GOWN] or [GUARD OUTFIT]. (You can change this selection later if you wish.) Follow instructions using the left stick to walk along the path. Next, press X to jump over obstacles and keep going along the path. After that the story gets going and you have the option X to skip cutscenes. You'll be in front of a glowing treasure chest. Open it to acquire the [TRAINING SWORD] and your first trophy! Press square to swing the sword and practice on the pots and barrels and flowers littered around the clearing in the forest. Always do this to maximise on coin collection as you'll need a lot to buy all the upgrades for a trophy. Walk up to the wooden bars and smash them to open the path. Break the pots and barrels at the left of the path and approach your first puzzle. There are three shining stones on the ground and your simple task is to step on them in the correct order to light them all. Bottom, right, and then left will solve it and a treasure chest appear. Open it to receive the [TRAINING BOW] and another trophy. Simple stuff. Use the right stick to aim and shoot the bow. It really is that simple with no option to target more accurately. Hit the two red targets on the raised bridge and it will drop down. You'll be told that only the sword can cut plants and flowers so just keep slashing with the sword to collect coinage. Hit two more targets to drop the next bridge - one is obvious on the bridge itself and the second one on a tree to the left. More barrels and pots to break and then you'll arrive another minor puzzle. This time there's a glowing plate on the ground and you're told to stand on this pressure plate. Do so and two shutters open to reveal red targets. Hit them both to open the portcullis and the door. Continue up the path for a short scene and the way back is blocked by a falling tree. Turn to the ledges and you're instructed to press X + X to double jump. This is an essential skill for much of the game. Use it to jump up the high ledges and break the barrels down to the left. Next is a wall jump. Green arrows are helpfully showing you the route. Jump towards a wall (to the left or right) and keep pressing X to wall jump. Use the left stick to swap sides of the wall as you go - that helps when you reach the top and have to jump off. Break more stuff on the ledge between the two wall jumps. After another scene and more story you'll arrive at the Ring of Stones. Head left down some stone steps to the witch's cottage where you'll receive the [EARTH CHARM]. This does extra damage to root based and flying enemies and can also be used to make objects grown. You'll get a trophy, Digging in the Dirt and see the earth icon at the bottom left of the screen indicating you have it equipped. It affects both sword and bow. Walk back to the Ring of Stones and prepare for battle! Dark wolves appear from the stones and rush towards you. It's best to stand back and use the bow when they appear and then the sword when they get closer. You can defeat a group of them at once with a nice sword swing. You'll get a trophy at the end of the battle and now the Forest Grove stage is open. Approach the first stone to check on the items you will find there, and enter. The game is on! ================================================================================ 1. FOREST GROVE (Earth) ................................................. *WALK1 ================================================================================ 1/1 Weapon (Claymore) 3/3 Tapestry Fire Charm Statue of Fergus - 9 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Icons above a level gate show how many items can be collected and how many you have. If you return here from the stage you'll find that the merchant is open for business at the witch's hut. From the start there are no enemies and you'll see a breakable pole to your left, a log to break at the right and some flowers with a second log to slash. There's an earth icon ahead so use the sword with square or the bow to hit the icon to make a platform so you can jump to the ledge. There's a lot of stuff to slash and break in the clearing for more coins. Walk up the shallow ledge to the left to find a [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece in a chest. This increases health for Merida, the Coop Wisp and Queen Elinor and you'll get the trophy Carpet Runner. Continue to the right, (smash a not very obvious log just to the left of the tree trunk) jumping over a tree trunk and fire arrows at three black wolves. If you kill them before they can attack you you'll be informed about Will-o-the-wisps. These are blue lights that surround Merida and give you a chance to performm a 'critical hit' giving bonus damage to enemies. A lightning strike will let you know you've scored a critical hit. Hit two green earth icons with arrows to raise platforms and reach higher ground. You'll see some purple mist ahead indicating a more challenging battle. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- Fight lots of black wolves using the same strategy as the last time, standing back and firing arrows as they appear and then using your sword. There are around 15-20 of them, and then come at you singly at first and then in groups of three or four. After beating them up, access the merchant shop with upgrades to purchase with your gold. First though you can do some flower slashing to gain extra gold to spend. For now you won't be able to afford much and many upgrades are locked out but increasing the collection range is a good long term strategy, allowing you to kill enemies at a distance and still get the gold they drop. You could buy an attack upgrade: the earth charged shot is a good one to start with - hold R1 to charge up and shoot arrows that spawn minions to fight for you. I had 716 gold thanks to assiduous scenery smashing but still not enough for both of those upgrades so I got a Health Potion upgrade instead. You'll get a trophy Ante Up for any upgrade bought. Head for the open gate and you'll be introduced to the bear triplets who will help Merida by solving a puzzle. TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- The controls are shown on the screen - press R1 to shift control from one triplet to the next. The triplet under your control is shown with a bright green circle around him. You can also zoom in to get a closer view of the puzzle with L1. The controls are simple - X to jump, the left stick to move. There are three pressure plates on the upper ledge and each of these will push out a wooden platform to make a path to the lever at the far right. 1. Move the upper left triplet onto the left plate and the right triplet to the middle plate. 2. Move the lower left triplet and jump across to the middle platform. 3. Move the upper left triplet to the right side plate to make the final platform appear. 4. Jump across to the lever with the lower triplet and activate it using triangle. Puzzle solved! You receive a trophy Triple Hs. Enter the open gate and you'll see a STATUE OF FERGUS [1]. This is a large coin stash and you'll find these dotted all over the place. Each one yields 50 gold so they are worth the effort even for the more out of the way ones. Hit all the flowers and dead log for a little extra gold although you cannot go back to the merchant now. Head right to find an earth icon. Hit this with your sword you'll find that you're standing on the platform it creates and can jump off to the grassy ledge. From here, shoot the earth icon to the right and once on the ledge cut some flowers and smash a dead log. Move on up and, after a short scene, you'll arrive at some purple mist. PURPLE MIST AND PUZZLE ---------------------- Shoot at a few shadowy wolves and listen to Merida who tells you what you're supposed to do. Step on the shining stones in a certain way. If you step on the wrong one it just makes a noise and turns a deep shade of red. If it's correct you hear a chime and the stone is lit up with a blue light. Stand on the right stone, then the middle one and finally the left one to open the stone door. KEYSTONE GATEWAY ---------------- Enter the cave to collect a [KEY]. Use this keystone to activate the shining blue magic gateway, giving you access to the next part of the grove. A few steps onwards and you'll see another STATUE OF FERGUS [2] on a ledge to the left of the path. Break this and continue up the path. There's a lone skeleton tree enemy that throws spears at you and releases multiple spears when you destroy it. It is weak to fire, but you don't have the fire charm yet. Shoot arrows to hit the two red targets to the left and right of a wooden fence and it drops to allow you access through an arch to a wide green field. There's nothing to find if you search the lower part except a few flowers and a log to break but head up and to the right to find something large and black! On the ledge behind Queen Elinor is another STATUE OF FERGUS [3]. Enter the misty gateway to another area to find the arrow root and help Elinor. SWAMP ----- Explore the first area to cut some plants for some extra gold. Head towards the small island and kill the mushroom thing that spews spores but cannot move position: you can shoot it with arrows easily enough from a distance. Jump to the island and then across the wooden platform quickly as it will sink if you linger too long. Walk up a narrow path killing two more mushrooms to the left of the open tree trunk with arrows, and four more further on. Prepare for battle with wolves as you move into the open again, and try using Charged shot if you bought it. It's R1 to charge and then release the minions to fight your battles for you. More flowers and a dead log will add to your gold total. Continue heading up the screen and jump to an island from whence you can attack a mushroom on the next island. Make your way over this island and the floating platforms to the shore. Target the two triangles with earth arrows and jump on the platforms to reach the higher ground. Keep firing arrows to hit two wolves that will attack as soon as you move forwards. There's a STATUE OF FERGUS [4] to the left of the clearing and some flowers. Walk to the far edge of the area where you'll see a dead tree trunk and a mushroom to the left of it. Check out the dead tree to see the option to use the zipline with a triangle button. When you land jump up two ledges and kill a mushroom. Open the chest to get a [TAPESTRY OF BATTLE] piece. This increases the duration of Merida's power attack. Drop back down and turn up the ledge to see another tree trunk. Hit earth icon and use the triangle button to ride another zipline taking you directly to the purple mist. PURPLE MIST ----------- Kill all the wolves (there are about eight of them in total) and you'll find the arrow root: the shining reddish plant in the middle of the area is pretty obvious. Walk into the flowing mist to return to Elinor at the Forest Grove. QUEEN ELINOR ------------ You control the Bear for a battle with skeleton trees and wolves. This is a good point to gain a trophy. Stop still and press the circle button to charge up bear power and enemies will gather close. When you release the energy it's easy to smash five or more at once. (Get out of my way. As Elinor, charge 5 enemies with a single charge.) The enemies drop plenty of health potions so you should never be in any danger even on Brave difficulty. Whack them all and after the battle control is back with Merida. THE CASTLE ---------- Get your bow and arrows ready for some sharp shooting now. Cross the stone bridge and stand on the pressure plate. Aim high to hit a dark red shield above the middle door. That lifts up the two wooden shutters and reveals two shining targets to hit quickly. Aim for the right one first as it's closer and then the left. If you're too slow the shutters will fall again, but the hit target stays hit so it's easy enough to hit the other one. The door opens leading into a half ruined stone building. Note that that you can see through to the far left and might spot a Fergus statue on a ledge over the river. You cannot access this now but will come to it later on. Walk down the stairs and go right to find a shining stone puzzle. Stand on far right stone, then the left one and lastly the upper one to open two portcullis doors. Go back to the first door to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [4]. PUPRLE MIST ----------- Through the main door and up some stairs you'll find the purple mist which reveals enemies weak to fire, but you don't yet have the fire charm! First a silver wolf appears at the upper right corner of the room. Use a Charged shot if you have it, to let the minions deal with it and take some of its attacks while you pummel it with your sword. If you don't have Charged shot it's a lot tougher and the wolf is hard to target as it moves around fast. After that two skeletons appear and they throw single spears at you, until they die, when they do a suicidal multi-spear attack. Watch out for this and jump out of the way of the spears. FIRE CHARM ---------- There's nothing to find here, so continue through the next door to find the [FIRE CHARM]. Yes, NOW they give you the charm you needed for that battle! You get the trophy Toasty as well. Switch charms by using R2 to select the fire one and hit the fire symbol to burn the door. Enter the doorway and head to the left and down to reach a rock with a special stone at the left and fires burning on top of pillars ahead. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- Move forwards to prompt a battle with silver wolves and then a big ice monster. This is where a fire Charged shot would be nice to have, except you don't yet have access to it since you haven't had the chance to buy the upgrade. However, you can begin the battle using earth Charged shot to target the first wolf that appears in the upper right corner. Then change to the fire charm and kill this wolf before attacking the rest with your sword. Four wolves attack together and then a fifth one will appear after you've killed one. They will drop some health potions thankfully. When they are downed the ice golem appears. It fires long ice spears at you which erupt along the ground. While it's busy doing this you can hit it close up with your sword. Dodge its normal ice spear attacks and fire arrows from a distance when you can. (I was struggling with this fight when in Brave mode as one hit from the golem can kill you.) The strange stone has become a merchant and the fires on top of the pillars will have been extinguished. Buy the Charged Shot: fire and if you're playing on Brave difficulty buy the first upgrade to this as well as the Power Attack. (There's another tough battle coming up before the end of this stage!) The Power attack is good to get early on as it takes a lot of power attacks to get the trophy. It's slow to accumulate the energy needed to unleash the attack and there are many more power attack upgrades to buy. You'll see a purple orb appear above the charms. When this is full you press circle to release the power and it lasts for a few seconds. Jump over the three pillars at the back of the battle ground and go through the lighted doorway. The three bears join you to solve a puzzle. TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- This time all three bears are gathered together the bottom left of the puzzle area. 1. Move one bear up the left of the screen to the glowing bear face on the wall. Pull it to move the middle platform 45 degrees to make a bridge. Keep hold and don't release. 2. Move the second bear up the two ledges at the left of the screen and then over the bridge to the right ledge. 3. Move the third bear onto the bridge. 4. Pull the switch with the right bear, and don't release 5. Release with the left bear to turn the bridge to make a path to the ledge. 6. With the middle bear walk to the switch and activate the lever. TREASURE -------- Move Merida through the door and use fire arrows on the red icon to open a door to a STATUE OF FERGUS [5]. Smash various barrels and pots for some more gold coins and head up the stairs to the left. There are no more enemies until you pass through the gate to outside the castle. Kill the dark wolves the easy way, by jumping onto the ledge at the right and firing arrows from there: they can't reach you. Before climbing higher walk down to the edge of the broken wall and drop down to the small ledge above the river to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [6]. Then climb up the green ledges. Break some barrels and walk right to find another STATUE OF FERGUS [7]. Head to the left where you see a red target and a small waterfall. Wall jump up to hit each red target and jump off to the left. From here double jump the gap to the right to stand on the last target and this removes a stone in the wall to the left. Jump back and open the chest to get [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] which increases Queen Elinor's damage. Double jump the gap to the right and walk up. Smash and slash flowers for some coins and then use the earth charm attack to unlock the zipline and cross to the far left of the chasm. Drop down from the log and kill a couple of black wolves. There's another STATUE OF FERGUS [8] to the right of this area. Walk up to the river crossing and jump across the platform to the far side. Walk up and turn left to find a wall jump that allows you to reach the higher ground. Come off to the right and then double jump to the left ledge to find a chest. This contains a good old Scottish [CLAYMORE] sword which increases damage with all swords. Continue heading right across a bridge (which breaks behind you) and then go right again to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [9]. Smash that and turn back to jump across the river using the platform and prepare for battle! PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- This battle is a repeat of the previous one, except that all the enemies appear at once and there are skeletons as well. You'll find that the fire Charge shot upgrade was worth the gold! Kill the white wolves first, then the spear throwing skeletons and finally the large ice monster that throws ice shards at you. This monster has two attacks and the most dangerous is the ice spears. Jumping high can put you in the range of these ice spears. Use dodge to avoid them and stop and fire when he makes his jagged ice shard attack. By the way, if you pass out and have to repeat the battle your Power attack gauge will not reset - it gradually fills up and this can be very useful when playing on Brave difficulty. If you're having trouble on Brave difficulty and don't want to give up, try jumping BACK over the wooden jetty: it reappears after few seconds. You can fire Charged shots at the wolves with no danger of being hit by them. However, the skeletons will target you with their spears so you need to be careful to avoid these: shoot from the ground and then jump up the ledge to escape the spears and then jump down and fire again. You won't get the health potions that the wolves drop and you can't reach the ice monster from here. After the battle access the merchant at the waystone and indulge in some upgrades to your skills: upgrading the power attack is useful, and upgrading your Charged fire shot, but maybe save gold for the next charm upgrade in the next stage. Walk through the misty river to return to the Ring of Stones where the second stone will open a new area. Run down the path to the left of the stones and you can access the merchant at the witch's house. This is helpful because you could do some coin collection in a completed location without needing to complete the stage, return here and buy more upgrades. ================================================================================ 2. COASTAL CLIFFS ....................................................... *WALK2 ================================================================================ *Look! Birds!* 1/1 Weapon - Short Bow 3/3 Tapestry Wind Charm Statue of Fergus - 5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Break everything in sight - flowers, barrels and a dead log, and jump up the ledges to the cliffside. Kill a skeleton that appears as the path slopes upwards. You can force it off the edge with sword strikes or shoot from a distance. You cannot access the open doorway at the left of the path just yet as it's too high. Head to the right and kill three skeletons with ranged fire attacks and smash the pole and flowers. Jump down to the ledge at the lower right to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [1] flowers and a pole. Equip the earth charm before hitting the icon to create a platform to get back up. Continue walking right (swiping some flowers and two wooden poles as you go), past a new white icon and an out of reach chest. A little further on there's a short scene and then you'll arrive at some purple mist. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- There's a battle with skeletons that are vulnerable to fire and a rock throwing giant that's weak to the same element as that new icon which you don't have possess. Use fire Charged shots on the skeletons and when they are all downed concentrate on the giant. The problem with his rocks is that they have a wide area of effect which will damage you. Keep running around, avoiding the purple mist the rocks create by jumping and using dodge. Try and get him to throw the rocks into the sea! If you can come up behind him attack with your sword, but he might swipe at you, so it's best to stay at a distance and shoot earth charge shots letting the minions deal with him. You will access another merchant after the battle and can slash more flowers around the battleground. Increase the power of your earth Charged shot. PILLAR JUMPING -------------- Carefully jump across three rock towers to the next platform and fire at three attacking birds: all weak to earth. There's another white icon to the far right, but you cannot access this just yet so ignore it for now. Check for pots and flowers and a log. Jump over three more pillars to the next platform where you need to kill another bird. Head left and jump down five rock pillars to where a rock throwing giant is waiting. If you fall you'll be back at the start of this bit, and lose a little life. Use Merida's shadow to help judge the jumps. The giant's rocks can hit you on that final pillar although you could risk it and stop on that last pillar and use earth Charged shot arrows to kill him with minions although in fact he is has the white vulnerability. There are around 6 black birds to kill (using earth against them) after you jump down. Stand on the pressure plate which lifts the gate, but hurry through or you'll get squished! PURPLE MIST ----------- Move on and the wooden fence drops to let you over a chasm. The purple mist indicates boss battle and it's the toughest one yet. These enemies also show the white weakness, so just do the best you can with what you've got, and as you'll have discovered, earth Charged shots work best. The first boar charges from the upper right corner and then the giant appears by the right hand wall. Charge shot the hurtling boar first and then target the rock throwing giant. When he's dead you'll have three more boars to kill, but they come to life one at a time. Jump and dodge to avoid them if they get too close. However in Brave mode it's best to target the boars first as a couple of hits from one of them can nearly kill you and they are very fast. Try and use at least two earth Charged shots as soon as possible and the minions should destroy the first boar. With two upgrades to earth Charged shot and one to increase the speed of the shot this battle was much easier! Stand back and fire off Charged shots to kill them all before they can reach you. WIND CHARM ---------- Walk over the bridge to obtain the [WIND CHARM] and the trophy: Everyone knows it's windy. This charm does extra damage to rock enemies snd also lifts objects into the air. Use R2 to change the charm to wind and hit the icon at the left to make a platform allowing you to jump up. Shoot wind arrows at the target on the far wall to make a second platform and jump across and enter the opening. Use fire arrows now to burn away the barrier and you'll come out at the open doorway you couldn't reach before. TREASURE -------- Jump down, and go right and you'll have to deal with four or five charging boars, but you can avoid them by jumping back to the ledge below the open door, or the one at the far side of the ledge, as they cannot follow. Destroy them all using earth Charged shot so you don't have engage them at all. Walk up the sloping path and you'll be attacked by some birds: they appear both in front and behind you. Finally use wind sword on the white icon to get that chest. It contains a [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] increasing Queen Elinor's damage. Head right, back to the merchant, and upgrade the wind Charge shot if you can afford it. Jump across the stone pillars again to a wide ledge. You'll find four rock giants here, but they are easy to defeat with the wind charm equipped. Stay well back and keep firing at them, watching out for the long range rocks they throw. Hit the wind icon in the far corner of the rock face and jump on the small platform that appears. This is a launchpad. Yay, time to fly! Press triangle and you're catapulted over the wall. Turn back and walk to the rock wall where you can smash a STATUE OF FERGUS [2]. Kill the plant life on the ledge and then jump across three pillars to larger ledge with an earth icon. Activate it to launch a zip wire across to the far left. Fire arrows at the enemies in the distance and you can kill them all before they get close. These short and stocky enemies move slowly and appear in groups and are not vulnerable to anything specific. They will blow themselves up if you run away from them. Be careful not to get caught in their explosions. I like to use earth Charged shots and let the minions do the dirty work. There's a STATUE OF FERGUS [3] close to the rock wall here, a couple of wooden poles to smash and some flowers. Walk on and you'll see some pots by the edge of the rock and sea and a wind icon next to a ledge. Activate this to reach another STATUE OF FERGUS [4] on the high ledge. A couple of birds appear when you reach the corner of the pathway. Kill them with earth arrows and then use wind arrows to hit the icon on the rock across the water to create a stone platform. Double jump to reach the rock and then jump to the next rock to break a couple of barrels. Use wind arrows again to another wind icon and make another stepping stone to the last small rocky outcrop. Open the treasure chest which contains the [SHORT BOW]. Hit the wind icon and jump on a small green platform which turns out to be a launchpad. Press triangle to be deposited directly into the purple mist. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- You're in a battle with a lot of skeletons (about twelve of them) and a rock monster. The battleground is fenced in and small so you can't back up and stand at a distance. Use fire arrows on the skeletons first and then you'll probably have to use your sword as they crowd in around you. Dodge the rocks thrown and then change to the wind charm to finish off the rocky rogue. By the way, if you pass out during this battle you'll be returned to the previous battle before all the island hopping. In Brave mode you need good health when you begin this battle and that's not easy to accomplish. At least you don't have cross over the islands again and can go directly to the second battle. I upgraded both earth and fire Charged shot to the maximum for these battles and that made all the difference. Upgrade Charged shot wind at least once and then climb the ledges to where you see a circular moving rock thing down to your left. Use wind on the icon to make a launchpad and when you land use earth Charged shots to destroy the dumpy suicidal enemies that emerge from this. Clean up the plants life and barrels and jump up to a round rock ledge where you can view a rock throwing giant. Keep moving along the rocks, sweeping up the flora and pots as you go, to where you can target him at a safe distance. His rocks all fall into the sea but your Charged shot wind arrows can reach him! Cross the gap using the platform activated by a wind arrow. PUZZLE ------ Hit all three red targets along the rock walls and this causes a chest to appear. Open it to get a [TAPESTRY PIECE] which increases the duration of Merida's power attack. Swipe the scenery for coins before heading to the right. Shoot wind arrows at three icons to create platforms to cross over the sea to the far shore. Walk right, to the end of the narrow ledge, to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [5]. Go back up the pathway and head up towards a building. Change to fire arrows to smack down a couple of skeletons. Then, use wind to hit the icon on the rock face. Jump up to the next area and smash the bits and pieces for some coins before walking left to trigger another triplet puzzle. TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- 1. The green light begins on the lower right triplet, but change to the upper left one. 2. Pull on the glowing bear face to lower the platform on the lowest ledge. 3. Change to the first triplet on the lower ledge and step onto the platform. 4. Return to the top left one and release to move the platform higher. Walk back to the pressure plate and stand on it to make a path for the lower triplet. 5. Move the third, upper right triplet onto the second pressure plate to make the second part of the path. 6. Move the lower triplet across the path to the right. Activate the switch. 7. This creates a doorway through the wall on the top level, so move that triplet right, to the second switch. Activate it to open the way for Merida Double jump to the rock and turn up. Open a chest at the upper side of the rock, next to the building wall. This contains a [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece which increases Merida, the Coop Wisp, and Queen Elinor's health. Jump over three rock pillars to an open area with three rock groups slowly turning and some nasty looking purple mist. PURPLE MIST ----------- There are more of the strange rocky round things that spew suicidal minion type creatures. Respond with your own minions! Except the rocky enemies are all weak to wind, but the minions can protect you for a short while. This is another tricky battle in Brave mode as the enemy minions are strong and their fire ring suicidal attacks can quickly kill Merida. Run around dodging them with L1 and avoiding the rock throwing giants too, continuously firing off wind arrows until they blow themselves up or you kill them. I wasn't fussy. Once they are gone it's not so bad, Just two wind weak giants to avoid and destroy. The merchant is available again, and you could upgrade your fire Charged shot, if it's not yet at full charge, since the next stage has many weak to fire enemies. Step into the white misty river at the left of the rock to return to the Ring of Stones. ================================================================================ 3. CHILLED CREEK ....................................................... *WALK3 ================================================================================ 1/1 Weapon (Sharpened Runesword) 3/3 Tapestry Ice Charm Statue of Fergus - 14 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You begin this stage on an icy path in a forest. Hit the fire icon in the tree trunk to your left with a fire charm attack and enter the opening to find the first STATUE OF FERGUS [1]. Continue walking up the path smashing branches and mounds of snow along the route and keep the fire charm equipped. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- When you reach the clearing you'll be attacked by silver wolves and a large ice creature. Shoot fire arrows at them all and use the power attack if you have it and if the orb is showing a circle. You can retreat and jump back up the small ledge to the path and the wolves cannot reach you there. Keep shooting your Charged fire shot from there until you've go them all. After that it's quite easy to destroy the single ice giant. Access the merchant and buy the power attack if you haven't done so already or acquire two power upgrades. One extra power from doing damage and the other from taking damage. Continue onwards under an overhanging rock and head to the right after crossing the bridge. Smash a STATUE OF FERGUS [2] and then a second STATUE OF FERGUS [3] to the left of the back wall. Climb the ledges and smash the stack of stones blocking an opening in the rock face to find a chest with a [TAPESTRY OF BATTLE] piece. This increases the duration of Merida's power attack. Walk down the path and you emerge at a ledge above the merchant battleground. Hit the wind icon on he dead tree and use the zipline to cross to the right. Break a couple of snow mounds and walk up the narrow path with three more mounds and a pole to break. You'll see two wind icons on the edge of the icy river. Shoot them with wind arrows and change back to fire before crossing the platforms. PURPLE MIST ----------- As soon as you land on the far side you'll be attacked by three ice monsters all firing ice spears at you. Run back and forth from right to left to dodge these while shooting fire arrows at them. When they are downed silver wolves appear from the white circular rocks. After all are destroyed the gate opens. In Brave mode you might need to do more than this. You can jump back over the two earth platforms to the left ledge and shoot fiery Charged shots from this safe ground. Don't stand on the actual platforms as the giants' ice spears can hit you there, but after they have gone you can move to the second earth platform to attack the third giant. You'll also get the two white round stone enemies as well. It might sound like cheating, but in Brave mode anything is ok! ICE CHARM --------- Go through the open gateway to claim the [ICE CHARM] and the Trophy: Ice to see you. This charm hurts fire-type enemies and can freeze or cool objects. Return to the battleground and fire ice arrows at the three ice icons to the right to make platforms. Cross over the river to the far side and break the snow mound, barrel and pole. Head off to the right and as soon as you go through the stone arch a door will shut behind you. There are three visible snow mounds and a pole to break. Walk up to the top mound and you'll see two more to the left of it and a STATUE OF FERGUS[4]. Follow the path down to another purple mist boss battle. PURPLE MIST ----------- Equip the ice charm for this. Walk some way into the mist and then turn to shoot ice arrows at the monsters. You won't yet have the Charged shot for ice so do the best you can with ordinary arrows and hit the boars with your sword if they get too close. One trick is to jump up on the ledge at the upper left and the boards can't reach you there. But you cannot see the rest of the enemies as they are out of sight. Jump down from the ledge and the boars will rush at you so you can jump back up and attack them again. After dealing with the charging red boars attack the red circular stone monsters. Before moving on smash the STATUE OF FERGUS [5], snow mound and pole on the upper left ledge. There are two more snow mounds to the left of the ledge. ICY JUMPING ----------- Follow the path up and break five snow mounds and a log as you go. There are floating ice stones circling a small rocky island. Shoot at the ice icons to change the stones to solid platforms but jump on them before they disappear! You can jump on one and reach the first small island with a double jump - starting from the stony ground at the edge of the shore. Break the two snow mounds here and then jump on an ice stone to reach the island to the right where there's another snow mound. From here, make another ice stone to reach the island to the upper left of the river. Smash the STATUE OF FERGUS [6] here and return to the right. If you want more coins you can jump across to the island with two snow mounds to smash, but that's not necessary. The goal now is to reach safe ground all the way to the right of the screen. You cannot see it just yet. Shoot and jump onto a moving stone and then shoot again and jump again. They move slowly and won't sink so it's easy to keep moving to the right until the ledge comes into view. You'll end up on a small ledge with a wind icon. Break the snow mound and hit the icon with the wind charm equipped. PUZZLE ------ Jump up to the higher ground where you'll find a simple shining stone puzzle. Climb the ledges and stand on the left stone first, then the highest one, then the one on the right ledge, and finally the one on the ground. This opens a door to a treasure chest containing a [SHARPENED RUNESWORD] which increases damage with all swords. Smash the snow mounds while you're on the upper ledge. ICY JUMPING + MONSTERS --------------------------- From this area, jump down to the right and break a pole and two snow mounds. And yes, more ice stones and river jumping. However this time there are ice skeletons throwing spears at you. Kill the nearest one with fire arrows before you start jumping the ice. Hit the ice icons with ice arrows and make for the island that enemy was on and quickly kill the skeleton on the nearest island. Your next target is to head for dry land, landing close to the island with a STATUE OF FERGUS [7]. To access that, stone hop your way to the open ground to the right of that island. As soon as you land change to the fire charm to kill ice wolves. However, if you're quick you can just jump across to the island to your left and stand still killing the wolves from there. They cannot reach you across the icy river and it's fun to watch them milling around aimlessly as you shoot. This strategy is essential in Brave mode and it will take a while to kill them all but just stand there and keep shooting. (After getting the 50 coins I got the trophy Affluent.) Return to the shore and break some snow mounds and poles before continuing to jump across the narrow gap and then up the ledges and over a narrow bridge. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- After crossing the wooden bridge it is pulled up, preventing you from going back, and once you jump to the large island it's fight time! You'll see purple mist in the distance so prepare for battle with the fire charm. There are two
large ice monsters that fire ice spears and some spear throwing skeletons. The second ice monster doesn't appear until the first one is dead. The angle is really awkward so be careful not to fall off into the river. This is harder in Brave mode, of course! Keep trying until the power attack gauge is full and then you can use melee attacks to good effect on the big monsters. Start by charging your fire arrows BEFORE you jump into the purple mist. Fire these at the ice monster that appears at the lower right of the island and follow up by hitting with your sword. After killing one, go for the skeletons as you have a few seconds before the second giant appears. You CAN jump back to the path, or to the second lower path, but the spears can reach you there so you'll have to keep jumping to avoid them. Go too far and your arrows can't reach the enemies. But stop firing and they will stop too, so you can take a break! After the battle walk back and jump the gap to a narrow path at the bottom left of the screen. It's parallel with the bridge path. You'll find a chest containing [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] piece that increases Queen Elinor's damage. Back to the flowers and the merchant for another upgrade with all the ice skills unlocked. Get the Charged shot and an upgrade. ISLAND HOPPING -------------- From the battlefield head up and make a quick trip to the single island with a snow mound on it for extra coins. Use ice arrows to make an ice stone path to the nearest small island to the right. You'll be attacked by a skeleton as soon as you land so attack back fast using fire arrows. It's tricky to target him as he's almost out of sight and it's best to use ordinary bow attacks. Jump across to that island: there's a snow mound and a pole to break. Make an ice stone to the right and jump to to reach an island with a STATUE OF FERGUS [8] and barrel. From here you can see two islands. The upper left one has a fire skeleton and stuff to smash, but nothing else of note. Go up the river to the upper right island with a snow mound and pole and then make your way to the shore. There are no more enemies. Climb up the ledges to your left to reach a STATUE OF FERGUS [9]. Break the four snow mounds and smash the two poles for extra cash. PUZZLE ------ Step on the upper left pressure plate and stand still to move the ring around so the yellow sections are lined up pointing left. Step on the upper right one to make the ring spin faster in a clockwise direction and step off it when the yellow section is lined up with the rest. This opens the door in the back wall. CASTLE ------ You are now inside an area with high stone walls and pillars. There are no enemies in here, just some fun jumping around. Walk up to the edge and jump across the first set of pillars to the central tower roof. Stand on the middle of the four shining stones. Take it in turns to stand on each of the other stones in turn to open a shutter revealing a red target icon. Fire at all three one by one and you'll see a bridge drop at the far side of the area. Before leaving this tower shoot an earth arrow at the icon up to the right to make a platform. Go to the upper left corner of the tower roof and jump onto the pillar. From here jump to the pillar with the STATUE OF FERGUS [10] and then jump up to the pillar at the right (the one with the wooden shutter on it) and jump back down to the tower. Next, jump to the upper pillar and then onto the green platform. You'll need double jumps for these. Walk left to pick up the KEY and break the barrels. Jump down the ledge to the left and open the chest to get a [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece. This increases health for Merida, the Coop Wisp and the Queen. Return outside - yes, jumping all the way back by the same route - and activate the Keystone on the blue magic gate. More ice jumping! Look right and jump to the small island and then across the ice platforms to the island where you see a STATUE OF FERGUS [11] and a pole. The ice platforms will sink in the middle of the river so make your way around this sink hole. Break the items and return to the path. Walk up to the wooden building breaking two poles and snow mounds as you go, and a triplet puzzle will begin. TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- 1. Move all three bears onto the central wooden bridge. 2. Move one up to the end and turn right to find a nearly hidden switch to pull and release. This turns the bridge. 3. Move one to the left switch and the one still on the bridge to the right ledge. Stand on the pressure plate to raise two shutters. 4. Release the bridge with the first triplet and go back to stand on the bridge. 5. Pull the switch with the left triple to raise the bridge. 6. Move the one on the bridge across the path to the switch at the upper right. Activate it to create a bridge for Merida! Cross the bridge and use a wind sword swipe on the icon. Step onto the platform and launch yourself upward. Move up the islands breaking stuff as you go and watch out for nasty birds: they are weak to earth and there are two groups of them. Stand still and shoot until they are dead. Reach a larger island to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [12] and you can see the dangerous purple mist ahead. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- For this battle you need to use both ice and fire charms. There are ice wolves and an ice monster and fire boars and a fire monster. Once the small fry are dead target the big guys one at a time using the correct element. The battle starts with white wolves and then the fire boars join in. Jump back to the small island where you can attack these enemies with impunity! Once they are dead move onto the main battleground as the ice and fire giants will both appear and it's easier to dodge the spears on the larger island. Target the ice giant first as its spears are more dangerous than the fire giant's rocks. TREASURE -------- Walk up past the merchant and jump across to a smaller island. From here jump right to reach safer ground. Break two snow mounds and turn down the screen to jump a narrow gap to a round island where you'll find a STATUE OF FERGUS [13]. Jump back to the shore and and head to the right, around a rock and tree to find two snow mounds and a hidden STATUE OF FERGUS [14]. Walk past the left side of the tree and it will fall, blocking access back. Keep going to reach the misty exit, a scene and hence to the Ring of Stones. ================================================================================ 4. BURIED PASSAGE ...................................................... *WALK3 ================================================================================ 1/1 Weapon (Horned Hunter's Bow] 1/1 Outfit (Woolen Covering) 2/2 Tapestry Statue of Fergus - 12 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On arrival turn to the left and jump over the gap to the next large island. Shoot at the skeleton enemies that appear on the high ledge using the fire charm and Charged shot. You can kill them all before getting too close, and jump out of the way of their spears. Mop up the flowers and log for extra coins before proceeding. Cross to the ledges where they were and turn left. Walk to the end of the ledge to find your first STATUE OF FERGUS [1]. (You might have already smashed this statue when killing the skeletons.) Go back and continue along the ledge until you can jump onto a small island and thence to a moored platform. Kill more skeletons shooting at you from the shore before you jump across. Now, turn to the right and edge along the narrow ledge, jumping a small gap, until you find a STATUE OF FERGUS [2] as well as some flowers to slash. Return to the corner and walk up and you'll be in a battle with lots of toad things dropping from the roof. Whack them all with your sword or stand back and fire off arrows. Before going further turn left and jump across the gap to find another STATUE OF FERGUS [3]. Return to the path and take a few steps, then shoot wind arrows at the icon to make a platform. Jump across to the left wall of the cavern and walk on. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- You'll soon come to a purple mist area so equip the fire charm to deal with a large number of spear throwing skeletons. The best strategy is to jump back to the path and you get a better view of the skeletons' spear attacks from here. It's much easier to target them and avoid the attacks from these ledges, but their spears can reach you even on top-most ledge. More skeletons appear after killing a few so keep going! There's a wall jump to the upper right from the battleground which leads to a ledge with some pots to break and an alcove with a STATUE OF FERGUS [4]. Again, you might have already destroyed it while shooting at the skeletons, but it's worth while checking! However, in Brave mode you could escape the massed skeletons by making the wall jump first! Fire down on them from the relative safety of this ledge: although a few spears might reach you, it's easier to jump out of their way than if you were on the ground. I tried both of these strategies and found that the first one was the best as you get a full view of the battleground. Access the merchant after the battle. You will need wind Charged shot for the boss of this area so start upgrading that now! TREASURE -------- Walk up to the right of the battleground and behind the waterfall where you'll find a few flowers and a shining stone wall jump. (The boar statue gateway isn't accessible. ) Make sure to hit all three shining stones and that opens a small gate on the upper ledge. Here you'll find another STATUE OF FERGUS [5]. Ignore the blue magic gate to the upper left and continue right to reach an open doorway which closes behind you. Walk along the dark path and watch out for a small island to the right. Jump to that and break the STATUE OF FERGUS [6]. Jump back and be careful now because random spikes that appear as if from an underground spiky creature. Stay to the right of the path and move forwards quickly using Dodge to avoid them. At the end of the path use a wind charm to hit two icons and make platforms across the gap. Ahead of you is a small wall jump that leads to a STATUE OF FERGUS [7] on a high ledge. There are a few small pots to break on a ledge jutting out over the river just before you jump up to the purple mist area. PURPLE MIST ----------- There's a battle coming up: be prepared to switch between charms for your Charged shots: earth for the small creatures, which appear first, and fire for the skeletons, which tend to appear close to the thorns. You'll think it's over and then more small monsters will appear so don't drop your guard until the surrounding fence disappears. Pick up the key in the alcove at the back of the battleground behind the thorns in the far wall. MORE TREASURE ------------- Drop down at the right of the battle arena where you can break some small pots and shoot wind arrows to make two platforms. At the far side climb the ledges and near the left wall and then shoot two earth icons high up in wall and jump them to the left. You'll need to double jump the first gap. Reach the treasure chest with reveals [OUTFIT], WOOLEN COVERING, and a trophy! My Fair Lassie. Jump back down and continue walking to the right where you'll encounter more of the small stocky monsters here after leaping the narrow gap. Use your trusty minions to deal with them. (You can jump back across the gap and shoot from there, and in fact they will leap off the edge like lemmings!) I got the Tremble trophy here: for defeating 100 enemies using the Earth charm. The path turns up and you'll pass through a gateway and be back where you did the first wall jump. Do it again and make your way up left, up a couple of ledges, to the magic gate. Activate the keystone and continue along the path. Kill four skeletons and then hit the two earth icons to make platforms. Jump to the safe rock and shoot wind arrows to make a third platform. A single stocky creature will attack when you land. Two more earth icons make platforms to take you over to the left bank of the tunnel. Change to the fire charm and shoot at three skeletons in the distance but don't walk forwards because you'll encounter more spikes on this path. Step forwards and then retreat to the earth platform and let the spikes spike! After that you can pass through safely. Change back to the earth charm to hit three more icons and make a pathway to the purple mist area. PURPLE MIST ----------- Battle small boar monsters and large rock throwing golems. Most monsters are weak to wind but that doesn't matter because you're in Elinor's form. There are also a few fire weak skeltons. After trashing them all you're back in control of Merida. Hit the single wind icon to make a catapult platform and you're launched to a new area. Go right, climbing a couple of dark ledges, to reach a STATUE OF FERGUS [8] and lots of small pots to break. Walk back and jump up the wider ledge to continue up a wide path where you'll meet three weak to wind boars. The Slam attack is handy on the boars after the initial Charged wind shot. Two weak to fire skeletons will appear after you've dispatched the boars and two more skeletons appear behind you. Run back to target them all with fire Charged shots. Jump across to an island to the left where there's another triplet puzzle! How the hell did they get here! TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- At the start the green light is on the triplet in the middle, but swap to the one at the far left. I'm calling them 1, 2 and 3. from left to right. 1. Move 1 onto the pressure plate in front of him and this removes the wall for 2. 2. Switch to 2 (he's next to the lever) and move him right and down to stand on another pressure plate. This removes the wall for number 3. 3. Move 3 forwards and pull the bear face. Stay there. 4. Move 2 back to his starting position next to the lever and wait. 5. Move 1 up to the bear face and pull. 6. Swap to 2 and activate the lever now that the two side stones have been moved out of the way. That drops a wooden door to stop the water. TREASURE HUNTING ---------------- Back in control of Merida smash some pots and walk to the left of the island. Shoot ice arrows at two icons to allow her to jump across the river to the left bank. There's a chest here containing a [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece which increases health for Merida, the Coop Wisp and Queen Elinor (and some pots to break). Return to the central island and jump the two wooden platforms to reach a tunnel. There's a blue magic gate to your right which you cannot access right now. Use wind on the icon and jump up on the platform to reach an opening in the wall. A gate will shut behind you. Stop well before the end of the passage because there are spikes that erupt from the ground to hurt you. Shoot the icon with the earth charm and jump to the platform when it's safe. On the far side there's a wide area with a STATUE OF FERGUS [9] and some pots at the upper right, but there are more spikes to avoid. Jump and dodge staying close to the upper wall and heading to the statue. Don't linger as the spikes come right up to the wall. The spikes follow Merida so really you can go in direction. Staying close to the lower edge also works: circle around to reach the pots and statue. BATTLES ------- From here, jump a high ledge heading left. You'll be attacked by those rushing boars and some rock throwing giants. Use wind on them all and you can force the rushers off the edge with your sword. If you're struggling you can run all the way to left and jump up a ledge. From there you can send some minions to destroy the boars. The giants are not too hard as it's easy to avoid their rocks. In Brave mode this battle is a lot tougher as you might already have lost some health from the spikes, so running for the ledge is a good idea. After the battle walk up to open a chest in the alcove. You'll get a [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] piece. which increases Queen Elinor's damage. (If this is a return trip you can simply use the dodge roll to race across to the left and avoid this battle completely!) Continue heading left jumping up a high ledge and breaking some pots. Where the path dips down watch out when you hear the sound of spikes. Wait until they are retreating and follow them and jump over. They only appear on the green mottled ground and at the far side you're safe. Stand on the pressure plate and fire at the icon to open a door. Go through and turn up the screen to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [10]. Smash a few pots, collect the key and hit the wind icon. Use the launchpad to get fired back to the middle island. Jump the wooden platforms again and walk up the passage ahead to activate the Keystone on the magic barrier. Go through the opening and watch out! Three fire skeletons appear on the ledge to your left. You can fire off a Charged shot at them and retreat behind the pillar edge to get ready for another Charged shot. Deal with them and smash the pots before moving on to reach the purple mist area where a few of those small dumpy creatures attack. Just use your earth minions Charged shot to take care of them quickly and you can retreat a little to the ledge where the skeletons were to stay out of their way. At the far side of the cavern you'll find a wall jump. Take care to hit all the shining stones as you go up - start with the left one to makes it easy enough. At the top stand on the fifth shining stone to open the gate. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE ------------------- As you walk along the path you'll be attacked by fire skeletons shooting at you from a ledge at the right. Shoot them with charged fire arrows and then head for the purple mist. The enemies are fire vulnerable skeletons with that dying spear explosion and small weak to earth creatures that run around quickly. Use both earth and fire attacks and dodge the dying spears. For Brave mode jump back across the gap and keep firing at the skeletons from a distance. Don't bother with the small monsters until all the skeletons are gone. There are a lot of them! You should have collected a nice amount of gold by now and can upgrade more attacks. As many wind upgrades as you can afford is recommended to prepare for the next boss battle. Walk to the far right of the battleground where the ice rocks disappear under a ledge and you'll discover a STATUE OF FERGUS [11]. JUMPING TO THE GOLEM -------------------- This is a rather beautiful scene now - and requires slow jumping! Shoot ice arrows at the floating rocks and head upstream until you can jump left to a round island. From here, move down and shoot the wind icon to make a single unmoving block. Jump across to the lower island and open the chest. You get the [HORNED HUNTER'S BOW] which increase damage of all bows. Go back the way you came and head for another island at the upper right of the screen with a wind icon. Hit it to make a launchpad that sends you high up onto a path leading to a huge giant. Before moving on change to the earth charm. He'll be chucking boulders at you and the idea is to avoid these as you run along the path. At the end you'll see four earth icons high on the right wall which you need to shoot to make a path. But before that hit the purple looking stones at the right of the path to reveal an alcove with a STATUE OF FERGUS [12]. Dodge the giant's rocks as you jump over the earth platforms to reach the ledge with the wind icon. Hit the wind icon and use the launch pad to reach the boss platform. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- Try and kill the giant guardian as quickly as you can using Charged shot: wind attacks. Once he's downed the battle is won, so don't waste too much effort on the smaller enemies. That's the theory, but it's impossible to do this in Brave mode and you need to kill all the other enemies first. In Brave mode this is an extremely tough battle. My recommendation for Brave mode is to maximise ALL attacks first. You need that extra power attack bonus, plus the health upgrades especially as your health isn't yet good. I tried this battle for hours and failed before doing these upgrades. Don't even think about the Golem until the rest are dead. What I find so tricky is that with all the racing around I suddenly find my charm has changed. I swear I didn't change it! But anyway...If you die you'll be back at the launch pad so it's not that troublesome to repeat the battle. The dashing boar type enemies emerge from circular collection of rocks so you should target those enemies to stop the boars from being spawned. There are four of these, one at the top edge, one at the lower edge and two to the left of the arena. When you land at the battleground watch where the Golem is throwing his rock. If it's at you when you land be quick to and roll and dodge out of the way. If it's not, then stand and fire off a wind Charged shot before moving down the arena to attack the circular stone at the lower edge. You'll have to kill some boars and will get attacked by those stocky suicidal monsters too. Slam attacks are handy against these enemies. After this, dodge/roll to the upper edge and attack the second circular stone and don't stop. Head over to the left side and attack the remaining two rock circles and with a power attack activated you might be able to destroy a couple of giants too. Keep avoiding the Golem's rocks which have a wide area of effect - the dodge move can help with this - but you may simply find yourself jumping around like a pogo dancer. Get too close to the Golem and it stomps with its foot. There is a life gauge under the monster, at his feet, which is hard to spot at first. After all other enemies are gone keep firing Charged shot wind arrows at him and eventually he'll go down. You'll obtain the stage trophy: Taking out the trash, for defeating the Rock Golem Guardian. Buy anything you need and walk up to the misty doorway back to the Ring of Stones. ================================================================================ 5. SWAMP OF SHADOWS .................................................... *WALK4 ================================================================================ 1/1 Weapon (Bearstrike Blade) 1/1 Bow (Bearstrike Composite Bow) 3/3 Tapestry Statue of Fergus - 9 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attack some flowers and a pole and then walk right and drop down to the lower ledge, facing down the screen, to find the first STATUE OF FERGUS [1]. Shoot the wind icon to make a platform and jump to the main path. There are some enemies up to the left if you backtrack a bit, and these are vulnerable to earth. PURPLE MIST ----------- Move to the next ledge and don't jump across to the purple mist area. From here you can target all the enemies that appear. Use earth arrows on the little ones and fire on the skeletons. You can rack up a nice streak if you just avoid the death spears of the latter. (I got around 15 or 16 which is enough to earn the Impressive trophy for killing 15 enemies without incurring damage.) Note that I tried this battle using just earth Charged shots which creates minions to do the dirty work for you and this didn't work! The skeletons never appeared. Even if you don't get enough enemies to complete the Impressive trophy it is a really good place to gain the All Bunched Up trophy earned for killing five enemies at once if you haven't already obtained it. Wait until they gather close to your ledge and blast them with a Charged shot. It might not work the first time but keep trying - it's an easy area to reach on a re-visit. When all enemies are gone jump across the water and access the merchant. Cross the log bridge to a puzzle and kill a single earth enemy from a distance before you reach it. PUZZLE ------ The goal is to get the five orange squares lined up on the circle. Two squares will move around the circle when you stand on the pressure plate. Shooting the target will change the direction of the outer square. Get the outer one close to the left side of the slot for it and adjust its position as the inner one gets closer until they both line up. Basically keep firing at the shield. The reward is a chest with a [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] piece which increases Queen Elinor's damage. PURPLE MIST ----------- Keep going to the upper right and jump the gap, and then cross the log to where you can see the purple mist. This is a fun pound and swipe battle with the Queen. Keep attacking the boards, golems and skeletons until there are no more enemies left. After the battle continue up a ledge and shoot two red targets on two trees. This produces a treasure chest. Open it to acquire the [BEARSTRIKE BLADE] sword which increases damage with all swords. Smash the pole and flowers nearby before returning to the main area. WINDY HOPPING ------------- Walk up and to the right and use the wind charm to shoot at icons and make three stepping stones across the swamp. Jump up the ledge to reach another STATUE OF FERGUS [2], a pole and some flowers and then continue to the left to the next group of four wind icons. Shoot them to create stepping stones. Once on safe ground again move forwards a couple of steps to encounter two skeletons that need fire Charged shots. Jump up the ledges to the left to find a treasure chest guarded by a three static mushroom things, Just shoot them first! You'll get a [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece from the chest - Merida, the Coop Wisp and Queen's health have been increased. Back on the main path you'll see an earth icon in the distance. There are three of them and all make platforms above some spiky ground. There is time to jump down to the ground and up onto the platform when the spikes retreat. Don't miss the STATUE OF FERGUS [3] at the right side of the path close to the first green platform. There are no enemies on the path and after a short scene you'll see another treasure chest on an island. Go around the path to the right and make a double jump from the right side of the island and you'll land safely. Before opening the chest check you have the fire charm equipped. Open it to get a new bow the [BEARSTRIKE COMPOSITE BOW] which increases damage with all bows, and before you can jump back to the path a number of fire vulnerable skeletons will appear. Kill them all from the island and watch out for their death spears. (If this is a return trip to the stage the fire skeletons don't appear. ) Follow the path around to the far left to find an easily missed STATUE OF FERGUS [4]. As you walk back up the path you'll see a lower ledge with a dead tree trunk. Drop down to this to avoid getting spiked. Keep going around the corner to the far right to find another STATUE OF FERGUS [5]. Back at the corner jump up to the highest ledge and you'll get attacked by four more weak to fire skeletons. You can dodge their death spears by ducking back to the lower ledge. PUZZLE ------ There are two stone weights hanging on pulleys and two pressure plates on the ground. The left one opens the portcullis and the right one opens the gate behind it. Step on the left one and wait until the stone is fully dropped. Then step on the right one until it is also fully dropped, which only takes a couple of seconds. Then roll through the gateway (using L1) as fast as you can move! Hit two fire icons along the path to burn up some thorns and two large boulders drop and roll towards you. Jump to avoid them or run back towards the gate staying to the right side of the path and they will crash to the left. Keep going to the purple mist and equip the ice charm before you reach the visible giant fire throwing enemies. By the way, don't linger on the wooden platforms as they will sink into the water. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- There are some fire boars as well as the fire stone throwing giants. If you stay on the lower grass ledge you can avoid some of their attacks and simply keep shooting with your ice arrows.(By setting the game to easy I finally got the Untouchable trophy after finishing this battle, having avoided damage since the beginning of the stage). Playing in Brave mode this is a tougher battle and staying on the lower ledge helps a lot as you can avoid the rushing boars and dodge the fiery rocks more easily. Charge up ice shot and jump to shoot. Keep doing this until all enemies are defeated. After the battle check out the merchant and then use wind arrows to make a stepping stone over the swamp. From the stone turn down to the right and jump onto a wooden jetty and then to an island where you'll find a STATUE OF FERGUS [6] and various other things to break and slash. Back to the stepping stone and jump quickly across to the upper shore as the wooden platform will sink. TREASURE -------- Shoot the fire icon to burn the thorns and reveal a wall jump. Head left and use the wind charm on the icon inside a cavern to create a stepping stone across to a shining stone. Jump to the stone and the gate blocking access to the treasure chest will be removed. Double jump to avoid falling in the water. There's no timer switch on this puzzle so the chest is easy enough to obtain. You receive a [TAPESTRY OF BATTLE] piece which increases the duration of Merida's power attack. Climb the wall jump: jump left and then right and keep going until you reach the top left side. Hit the wind icon to make a platform from which you can jump to the right using a double jump. There's a STATUE OF FERGUS [7] on the ledge. Head left towards the purple mist but turn right before the next ledge down as there's a second wall jump, with a mushroom to destroy first. This is a longer wall than you've seen before and needs a quick double jump at the top of it to allow you to reach the ledge at the right. There's another STATUE OF FERGUS [8] here. PURPLE MIST ----------- Head for the mist and you'll encounter a number of black wolves that have no special affinity so smash them with your sword. Slam attack is very effective on them. However, you can retreat to the ledge at the right of the area and attack them all with Charged shots. When the little fast creatures appear shoot Charge shot earth minions to finish them off. Finally some skeletons turn up with a few more wolves and they require fire attacks. It's pretty easy to avoid all damage in this battle so you could get that *no damage* trophy here. After they've all gone equip the ice charm and move up the dark path. Kill various mushrooms and some fire boars will come rushing down towards you. There are a lot of them and they move fast so stand still and keep firing at them from a distance. The grassy area is safe but after that is a spiky section. Shoot the wind icon to make a platform and use it to reach the other side in safety. Cross the swamp with care as the four wooden jetty platforms will sink if you're too slow. TRIPLETS PUZZLE --------------- One triplet is at the far left and two of them in the centre of the area. 1. Move the left middle triplet up the two left ledges so he's in position to cross the wooden bridge to the right side of the area. 2. The triplet at the upper left activates a lever that makes the trolley on the higher ledge throw something at the stones at the back wall. There are three of these and each one changes the alignment of the three wooden bridges. The pulley must be lined up directly with the stone you want to hit. 3. The third triplet works the bear face at the right corner, and this moves the pulley along the ledge. Release (triangle) allows the pulley to move all the way back to to the far left. 4. The goal is to make the left and middle bridge appear and move the triplet to the middle one, and THEN make the middle and right one appear so he can move all the way to the right and reach the lever. 5.Get the triplet to the middle platform and move the cart opposite the middle target. Activate the lever at the left and this will make two platforms to allow the triplet to move all the way to the right. Activate that lever to open the gates for Merida. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- Enter the room and then retreat, staying well back, OUTSIDE the gates, and use arrows on the black wolves until you've killed them all. (Ice is a good attack to use as it freezes them in their tracks.) Then small creatures and skeletons will appear. Keep back, firing earth and fire arrows there are no more of these enemies. Change to the ice charm and continue using Charged shot on the large fiery giants. After the battle there's a merchant stone at the upper right of the room for any upgrades. Leave the battle area and walk up the green path, but go slowly because when the path turns up 4 large rocks will come rolling down. Step to the left and they will crash harmlessly into the right wall. There is a STATUE OF FERGUS [9] to the left of the path before reaching the corner. There are no more obstacles or enemies until you reach the stone bridge, but after that use earth arrows to kill the four or five little critters that appear. PURPLE MIST ----------- Equip the ice charm before entering the castle gate. It will close and you're faced with the final battle of this stage. Target the fire rocks at the lower left corner and fire boars with your ice attacks and then change to earth for the little creatures and the strange ropey tree in the upper left corner. There are a few skeletons too, but this is probably the easiest boss battle yet: even in Brave mode. There's nothing to find so enter the misty gateway to return to the Ring of Stones. ================================================================================ 6. MURKY CHASM ......................................................... *WALK6 ================================================================================ *What a strange place to put a treasure chest* 1/1 Sword (Elkhorn Gladius) 1/1 Bow (Elkhorn Seige Bow) 1/1 Outfit (Tartan Safeguard) 2/2 Tapestry Statue of Fergus - 13 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You begin this stage at the bottom of some rocky steps. As you climb these causeway stones you'll be attacked by black birds. There are two groups - three at first, and as you reach the top stones two more birds appear. All are weak to earth attacks. There are three earth platforms to make with earth arrows to access the higher rocks but there's an alternative route that leads to more treasure so don't bother with these. The route you'll go will end up above those platforms. Head right to kill three more birds. Destroy two barrels and jump to the right to reach a ledge up to a STATUE OF FERGUS [1]. Wall jump from here making sure to hit each shining stone as you head up, and when they are all lit, together with a fifth one at the top, a small cavern opens. The treasure chest inside contains a [TAPESTRY OF BATTLE] piece which increases the duration of Merida's power attack. Do a double jump to climb the wall at the left of the cave and shoot earth arrows at the icon to make a platform. Be careful jumping on this or you'll fall and will have to do the climb again. You'll reach another STATUE OF FERGUS [2]. Jump off to the left and you're above the three earth platforms you ignored at the start of this detour. Hit the single earth icon at the base of rocks to reach a rock path to the left which takes you to a STATUE OF FERGUS [3]. Return to level ground and walk right and up the open chasm where you'll spot some skeletons in the distance. Stay behind the small ledge and kill them all with fire arrows. There's another earth platform to the right, an out of reach key high up in the rock wall, and a blue magic gate that requires that key. You can't do much here now so hit the thorns with fire and continue up the track. VOLCANO ------- You're inside a volcano with black birds and spear skeletons to shoot. You can duck back to avoid attacks and it's not hard to kill them all with arrow attacks. Ahead are burning stones with ice icons, Shoot these with the ice charm and jump across the icy stones you've made. Be quick because the fire returns. Go left and burn up two thorn barriers to find a STATUE OF FERGUS [4]. Continue your journey to the right and use earth on the three icons you can see. Jump across the lava floor using these platforms and a rock pillar and stop on a small rock island. Hit the fiery stones with ice arrows and jump to the right set and then the left, and then a double jump straight up onto a single safe stone with a stick you can smash. From here, make your way up the side of the cavern, using wind arrows on the first icon and earth on the next three. Stop on the final platform and get ready to fire lots of ice arrows onto the fire rocks to your right. Jump across and head up to jump across to safety. Some more black birds will turn up so kill them with earth arrows. Before going further change to the ice charm and kill a fire giant before changing the fire rocks to ice and jumping over the gaps. There are no more enemies to contend with for now. Keep going using the ice arrows to make a safe path over smaller stepping stones until you need a final double jump to reach a large rock platform. You'll see the keychain ahead and as soon as you collect it you'll be outside close to the gateway, where you first entered the fire cavern. Double jump the gap to the left to reach the magic gate. If you fall you can use the short cut of the earth platform to get back to the jump off spot. TREASURE -------- Open the gate and carry on up the path to a small wall jump. Activate all three shining stones and the one at the very top and you'll open a stone door to reveal a STATUE OF FERGUS [5]. Go right to smash some scenery if you like. Further on to the left you'll see some fire skeletons in the distance and you can kill them all before crossing the water. Once they are gone and you approach the left rocks a large giant will appear. Stay at a lower ledge and you can easily miss his rocks. Jump and fire wind arrows at him. Return to the right and complete a simple shining stones puzzle to open a door and obtain a new bow. Step on them in the order of middle, right and then left. The [ELKHORN SEIGE BOW] increases damage with all bows. Back to where you fought the giant activate three earth platforms and jump to the higher ledge. Do the same again on another three platforms and make a double jump from the last one to reach the rock ledge. Jump down to a ledge with flowers on it and up again on the last ledge to reach a STATUE OF FERGUS [6]. Drop down from here and walk right. Kill some more skeletons and another giant with fire and wind arrows before walking up under the archway. Watch out for a single rushing enemy and kill it with wind arrows before it can mess up your total kill score! There are two more of these enemies to deal with and after that there are no more enemies until you round the corner and reach the purple mist. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE ------------------- There are three rock hurling giants and a group of those large charging boar enemies. All of them are weak to wind so use your best power attacks and Charged shots on them all while dodging the rocks. Stay back and you can kill them all before they can reach you. (Once the giants are gone you could move up and jump on the upper left ledge out of the way of the boars.) Check the merchant after the battle - you should have just one tapestry of each type left to find, 2 outfits and bows and 3 swords. Jump up the rocks to the left and go right to find a pole and a STATUE OF FERGUS [7] inside an alcove off the top rock ledge. Turn left and you'll see another one on a small high ledge. Go left to get to the left of that ledge: a ledge with flowers on it, and double jump to the right to reach this STATUE OF FERGUS [8]. Drop back down. Cross the narrow rock bridge and climb up to where there's a choice of route: you'll see an open brown path of ground ahead (with a battle) and a narrow brown ledge to the right. Turn to the right and you'll find another narrow rock bridge which leads to a treasure chest. This contains the [ELKHORN GLADIUS] sword that increases damage with all swords. After getting the sword change your charm to ice and venture up to the open ground. There are two fire giants and a number of fire boars here. It's not that easy because of the lack of space to manoeuvre out of the way of the burning ground but stay back and use Charged shot: ice arrow attacks. A Slam attack is effective if the boars rush around you. Continue through the opening and don't jump onto the next ledge until you've timed the spikes that appear. The narrow brown path at the edge is safe from spikes. Fire arrows will remove the thorns that block an alcove and you can shelter there and get a STATUE OF FERGUS [9] too. Jump back to the safe bit of path and over the spikes. Now you can take a breather while the triplets do the work! TRIPLET PUZZLE -------------- There's a circular ring puzzle with five orange sections to be lined up. 1. The first (left) triplet stands on the pressure plate to open a gate for the middle one to reach the bear head. 2. Pull the bear head until the inner three sections are lined up. 3. Do the same with the third triplet who is already next to a bear head, moving the outer ring to line up with the other four. 4. Finally, move the first triplet onto a lever and activate this. This resets the puzzle and opens the gate for Merida. PURPLE MIST ---------- Walk up the path and watch out for two sections of spiky ground - it's the mottled darker green parts of the path before and after the corner. The first set of spikes starts where the second lot flowers are blooming. Ahead is a purple mist battle but it won't get going until you jump down to the battle arena, and there's a gap. I fell at the gap and was returned to the ledge when the enemies appeared. Firing arrows while staying out of their way on the ledge is not a bad strategy! It's easy to jump back to the ledge and you won't suffer any damage at all. Enemies are those annoyingly fast small critters that are weak to earth and a few wind weak enemies thrown in to keep things lively. MORE TREASURE ------------- After the battle use an earth attack on the top right icon and wind on the next two to make three platforms to jump to a single grassy ledge. From here double jump up to the right to reach a higher ledge with a STATUE OF FERGUS [10]. (Or jump to the left and then to the right.) Hit the earth icon you see to the right of this ledge and jump across to an open cavern with barrels and pots to hit for coins, and a treasure chest. This contain a new outfit that's not as cute as the dresses: [TARTAN SAFEGUARD]. I was hoping for a tartan dress! Return to the green ledge and continue left, making four more earth platforms. Head up the path shooting wind arrows as you go because there are four more of those charging enemies and a single weak to wind giant with two more stumpy enemies at the far end of the track. Jump up three high ledges and then jump left to reach a STATUE OF FERGUS [11] and some flowers. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE ------------------- You'll see the purple mist after gaining that last coin stash so prepare for battle by equipping the ice charm. There are fire boars and a fire giant who appears on the high ledge to the left of the battle ground. After defeating the giant you can retreat to the ledge and the boars can't follow you if you need to stay safe. After the battle you can access the merchant and then jump up the ledge to carry on. Yes, there's more! First there are more of those slow moving stocky weak to wind enemies to kill on your way to another battle arena. PURPLE MIST ----------- Mum comes to the rescue and it's fun smashing enemies off the rocks into the lava. The enemies are weak to wind and ice, not that it matters! At this point I got a new trophy: Mum's the word - Defeat 100 enemies as Queen Elinor. INSIDE THE VOLCANO ------------------ After the battle look around the cavern to see two wind icons: one at the top left and another at the top right. You can double jump to the platform made by the left one and see a zipline above it that ends at the rocks to your right. This is sneaky because the camera angle and darkness of the rocks make it hard to see, but you can jump straight ahead to the rock wall and land on a low rock. Once you're safely across the lava jump up to the right and then again to the right to a ledge with a flower on it. From this small ledge do a double jump to the left to reach the higher rocks and another small stash. There's a famiiar STATUE OF FERGUS [12] on the ledge above your head. Drop down from here and do a careful jump to the left across a gap to the next rock ledge with another flower From here it's a double jump up to the high ledge at the left. Whew, now you see why it was worth the effort! There's a treasure chest in a small cavern containing [TAPESTRY OF VALOR] piece which increases health for Merida, the Coop Wisp and the Queen. This should net you a trophy for finding all the pieces of one tapestry. Throw rug - Complete a tapestry. The way back is easy. Hit the start of the zipline with your earth sword or arrows and use it to return to the rocky island on the lava. Jump down the screen to the central area of the cave and head up and right. Shoot the second wind icon with wind arrows (back off a bit if your arrows keep missing it) and shoot the earth icon with earth to make a platform to reach the exit ledge. TRAVELLING ON ------------- Follow the path and shoot at five of the grey stocky enemies on the way to access an open area with more earth platforms. Take a few seconds to smell the flowers on a ledge to your right. Shoot the first two icons and jump to land using Merida's shadow to guide you. You end on a large ledge with more flowers and STATUE OF FERGUS [13] at the upper right. Shoot the next earth platform and jump across it to a small ledge with a shining stone. Stand on the stone to make it shine and then do a double jump across the gap down to the far left onto another ledge. From here make a double jump to reach the large ledge and a second shining stone and a locked gate. Stand on that and then head up to the right where your fire arrows will remove some thorns and reveal two more shining stones, one on the right wall and one on a flat ledge. Do a wall jump to the right to hit that stone and then left to reach the one of the ledge. With all four stones lit up you'll open the gate to the next area. There are no enemies yet, (although there's a pole to smash if you're feeling itchy) but at the end of a rocky path you can see a purple mist. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE ------------------- Prepare for this battle with the earth charm and carefully jump the rock pillars to reach the open platform. There's not much point using your sword for this fight because most of the enemies are airborne, although there are a few of the little earth weak enemies. Use your earth Charged shot to deal with these. The boss harpy is weak to earth although it's hard to spot the health bar and icon which hovers just below its claws. Keep running from side to side and use dodge to avoid the harpy's purple ball attacks. There are also some black birds to deal with. Once you've destroyed all the smaller enemies (who drop healing potions) they won't re-spawn and you can concentrate on the big guy. You'll get a trophy for beating the harpy: Mopping up. One problem is that the minions can be created over the sea instead of on the rocky battleground. Also, there's nowhere safe to hide! This is hard work in Brave mode but keep firing earth arrows at everything, picking up healing potions, and activating power mode as often as you can. Access the merchant as usual and enter the misty gate to return to the Ring of Stones. ================================================================================ 7. FROZEN LOCH ......................................................... *WALK7 ================================================================================ *Not feeling so good. I'd better find a potion for my health* 1/1 Sword (Mustangshock Tulwar) 1/1 Bow (Mustangshock Hunter Bow) 2/2 Tapestry Statue Of Fergus - 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't be too quick to move over the bridge, but retreat, heading to the left, and you'll see some purple stones in the rock wall. Hit these with your sword to reveal a chest containing a [TAPESTRY OF FEROCITY] piece. Mum would be proud, as this increases Queen Elinor's damage. Smash three poles, cross the wooden bridge, jump the gap and continue to the icy ground. Turn down the screen before moving up to the purple mist. You'll find a STATUE OF FERGUS [1] to break open and some snow mounds to squash. PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE -------------------- As you get closer to the mist a wall of spikes blocks the way ahead. Equip the fire charm because you'll be attacked by white wolves that are weak to fire and some black shadow wolves too. Some of them attack you from behind so keep on the move: you can even back away to the wooden bridge. When you've smashed most the wolves into coins an ice giant appears sending lots of icy spikes in your direction, but he's slow to turn, so it's easy to out-run him. Keep at a distance and shoot Charged shot fire arrows. Use the merchant to upgrade your fire or ice attacks if you haven't already done so. (I got two trophies after this battle: On Fire - defeat 250 enemies using the Fire Charm and Wealthy - accumulate a total of 15,000 currency.) Shoot ice arrows at the floating ice rocks and use them to jump across the icy water to the nearest island with a shining stones puzzle. PUZZLE ------ There are 6 stones, lined up in sets of 3. Hit the hanging shield to be shown the order, but it's hard to remember as they whizz by so quickly! Jump on them in this order: 1, 6, 5, 2, 3, 4. Shield 1 4 2 5 3 6 Open the treasure chest to acquire a new sword: the fancy named [MUSTANGSHOCK TULWAR] which increases damage with all swords. (By the way, if you're revisiting the level you'll get 30 gold coins instead.) ICE JUMPING ----------- You'll see two possible routes off this island: one involves jumping onto ice blocks that are approaching the island and the second route requires you to jump onto blocks heading away from the island. Both are tricky and need you to fire arrows as you go. Pick the ones heading away from the island: once you're on a block it will carry you up and to the left in relative safety. There are some ice tree enemies on an island that you should destroy. You'll need the fire charm for them, but keep on the block and don't land anywhere just yet. You'll go left where you can see three target icons on a rock face. Hit
them with arrows and jump off your floating block to a small ledge with a
treasure chest that appears. This contains [TAPESTRY OF BATTLE] piece increasing
the duration of Merida's power attack. You should also trigger the trophy : Wall
to wall carpeting. Complete all tapestries.
From the ledge, fire an ice arrow to make a new floating block, and jump off
onto the small island close to the ledge. Pick up another block from the right
side of the island and you can float back to the puzzle island, and back around
the way you went last time. But this time, jump off your block as it passes the
open ground before the small ledge.
Fire arrows will take care of the ice enemies on the far off island. Jump across
the blocks to that island and break open a STATUE OF FERGUS [2]. From here,
shoot more ice icons and jump to reach the open ground to your upper right.
As soon as you land an ice giant will attack, so change to the fire charm again
and take him out as well as some ice trees on the next lot of rocks. Shoot the
ice icon again to make another floating block to reach that wide ledge and
you'll see a purple mist in the distance. Nearly there!
PURPLE MIST WAYSTONE
--------------------
Hop across using a couple of ice blocks, and you can land safely and have time
to change your charm from ice to fire before advancing into the mist This is a
repeat of the previous battle with black and white wolves and a single ice
giant that is weak to fire attacks. Slam attacks are effective on the masses of
wolves.
After the battle the merchant opens for business and you can jump across
the narrow gap using an ice block.
ICEBERGS
--------
More ice jumping and even Merida is getting fed up with it! This time you need
to use two blocks to reach the main path. After that there's a wider gap with
only a few floats. Wait for one to come close before jumping and it will glide
over to the next large island. Four black birds will appear here and they
require the earth charm. Smash the snow mounds while you're here as a bit of
light relief.
Jump to the adjacent island and a message appears for you to use the fire charm
to melt the large iceberg. Yeah, it's not the ice under foot you have to melt
but the large statue looking thing. Equip the fire charm and hit the ice with
your sword or Charged shots for fast disintegration! Once the ice is gone the
island will move with the current.
You'll soon reach more icebergs. This time there are two of them and you'll be
attacked by around 20 ice wolves as you try to melt the bergs. Not all at once,
but in small groups. It's an easy way to gain more currency if you need it! Keep
killing the wolves with fire attacks and Slam attacks and don't be too quick to
destroy the icebergs - make sure all the wolves have gone first.
The island floats on to the next hazard - you'll be attacked by earth weak
birds, but you might as well keep the fire charm equipped as you'll soon hit
another set of icebergs. There are three of them this time and you're assailed
by those small boar like enemies, that are weak to fire but rush at you.
In Brave mode these enemies are more dangerous and a nice way to deal with them
is to do a Slam attack when they first appear: they stay still as they can't see
you while you're in the air; and follow it up with sword hits. Fortunately they
only appear in ones or twos.
Wait until no more boars arrive and destroy all three icebergs.
PURPLE MIST
-----------
That's the last of the icebergs and you'll end up hitting land with a thud, and
a cold feeling as you see the purple mist! You can shoot at all the snow mounds
before entering the mist for another fun battle using Queen Elinor. It's just
some wolves, boars, and four of the extra powerful ice giants that make ice
spikes appear along the ground. Slash, pound and charge until they're all gone.
More shopping if you need anything: power up your Charge shot: fire if you
haven't already got it to the maximum, and then follow the Queen over that
wooden bridge.
Make a block with ice arrows to cross the gap as usual, only this one doesn't
move! Break the STATUE OF FERGUS [3] for 50 gold and then jump up the ledges and
do a double jump to across the gap to reach the next set of ledges. Hop up the
ledge and walk up to reach the visible shining treasure chest to the right of
the blocked gateway. This contains a new bow the [MUSTANGSHOCK HUNTER BOW],
which increases damage with all bows.
Approach the gateway and you'll be inside a puzzle.
TRIPLET PUZZLE
--------------
The goal is to get one triplet across to the white lever on the high ledge at
the right of the area.
1. Move any triplet up to the far end of the left ledge and you'll see that
there are four targets with a ledge inbetween. You get a much better view of the
puzzle from here.
2. Move another triplet straight up to pull the white bear head. This moves the
crossbow trolley along to the right. There are four red marks on the ground that
show the relative positions of the targets. Get the front wheel on each red mark
in turn to match the target!
3. Once the crossbow is lined up with the first target use the third triplet to
activate the middle white lever to fire the crossbow. This creates a small
platform in front of the target. It doesn't look like a platform from a distance
but swap to the first triplet and you'll see that each arrow fired creates a
small ledge with its feather flights.
4. Carry on firing until all four targets have platforms.
5. Carefully jump across all the platforms using the triplet's shadow to help.
Activate the white lever on the right ledge to open the door for Merida.
PURPLE MIST
-----------
Yes, more purple mist and slightly ominous music. Smash the six snow mounds
before moving into the mist. Once again it's the wolves and large giants so
you'll need the fire charm equipped for the whole battle. The fighting area is
large so there's not much danger of falling off and using the fire Charged shot
attack is VERY effective! Stay well away from the giants if you can but target
them first as they can do a lot more damage to you than the wolves.
There are boars as well as wolves and it's best to do a Slam attack on these.
This is a bit of a deceptive battle because you will destroy all the enemies and
think you're nearly home dry, but then a lot more appear and dealing with what
seems like endless giants is no joke in Brave mode. The giants' fast ice attacks
can really hurt you so keep moving around, dodging and jumping and slamming!
Pick up all the health potions that the smaller enemies drop and use your power
attack as soon as it appears.
Enter the misty doorway to return to the Ring of Stones.

8. RUINS OF THE ANCIENT KINGDOM ....................................... *WALK8
================================================================================
*I've done it! I've done it!*
1/1 Sword (Ursineleash Edge)
1/1 Bow (Ursineleash Battle Bow)
1/1 Outfit (Torn Attire)
Statues of Fergus - 1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You start inside a stone built corridor with no enemies. Smash all the barrels
and pots you see for some coins and jump on the large black block. From here,
double jump up in an attempt to reach the lighted opening in the wall. After a
scene jump up here again and go forwards to the edge of the opening where you'll
see an ice icon on top of a burning pillar to your right.
PILLAR JUMPING
--------------
Jump the gaps to the second stone pillar. From here you get a good view of the
fire pillars with their icy icons. Use ice arrows to shoot the first double set
of icons and make it safe to land on the pillars. Move on to stand on a safe
area behind these pillars. The fire returns in a few seconds so don't linger.
You will see a single fire topped pillar to your left. There's a safe pillar
just behind this one and that is your next goal. It's easy to shoot the next two
ice icons and also shoot the next one straight ahead. Move forwards jumping to
the third pillar past the one to your left and then to the safe pillar behind
the left one. Shoot the pillar blocking your view and jump onto it to reach the
pressure plate pillar to the left.
When you step on this a small platform moves up to reveal a red target on a high
pillar to the upper left of the screen. Shoot this and a pillar is raised
allowing you to jump across the gap to reach a shining stone. Step on this and
new earth icons appear on pillars at the far right. Return the way you came.
From the safe pillar behind the single one shoot the three ice icons to make a
path forwards and you'll reach another safe pillar behind them. Stop here and up
to the right you'll see the earth icon. Shoot this to create a green ledge.
Jump forwards two pillars and turn to the right. Double jump onto that green
ledge and then to the next two, after you've hit the earth icons. Finally, jump
to the top of the pillar to reach a red shining stone. Standing on this creates
a new pillar, so go back down: you can simply jump left off the top. (You'll
head up soon, but first, go left.)
Heading left from the pillar by the green platforms you can break your first
STATUE OF FERGUS [1] on the second pillar. The next three pillars take you close
to a thorn wall with two fire icons. Shoot these with fire arrows and then jump
to the ledge that's exposed. Stand on the shining stone to create a new pillar
and break the barrels for some coinage. Open the treasure chest which contains
the final sword: [URSINELEASH EDGE]. Damage with all swords is increased and
you'll get the trophy: Swordtacular. Collect all swords.
Return to the pillar junction by the three green platforms and now you can go
forwards. Head up, jumping over the next two pillars and you'll see another
earth icon ahead that creates a green platform to reach a third pillar. You're
now facing left and can see a wind icon on top of the last pillar. Shoot it with
the wind charm equipped and jump across the new pillar you made to reach this
launchpad. (Or jump across and hit the icon with your wind sword.)
PURPLE MIST
-----------
Press triangle to activate the launchpad and you'll land outside a high opening
with some purple mist in the distance. Break a few pots and enter the mist.
This is one of those battles where they throw everything at you, presumably
because they couldn't think of anything new! Ice is the best charm to use for
most of the battle and Charged shot and Slam attacks are effective.
There are those little creatures that dash around fast and are weak to earth:
they emerge from a collection of thin branches at the upper right of the area if
you want to get rid of that quickly. There are some trees which are weak to
fire, and a couple of fiery giants who are weak to ice. Various fire boars are
rushing around as well as those stumpy suicidal enemies.
Earth charged shot arrows are handy as the minions soak up some of the damage
that might come your way. You can also find some protection from the fiery
giant's rocks by standing behind the pillar at the right of the entrance to the
room and aiming ice arrows at the monsters at the right side of the room. The
rocks can reach you there so be prepared for some evasive action.
Access the merchant and break all the barrels and pots at the upper left and
lower right of the room. Approach the door and you'll be in another triplet
puzzle which you can see at the upper left of the screen.
TRIPLET PUZZLE
-------------
The three triplets are situated at the front of three blocks.
1. There is a green light on the left one so move him to the pressure plate at
his left. This moves a platform for the middle triplet.
2. Change to the middle triplet and move him up to the pressure plate hopping up
the stone step and then over the wooden platform. Standing on the plate moves a
platform for the right hand triplet.
3. Swap to the right triplet and move him up over the stone step and the
platform to stand on the pressure plate. This moves a platform for the left
triplet.
4. Control the left triplet and hop him up to where there is a switch to pull
but don't pull it yet.
5. Swap to the middle triplet and move forwards onto the stone block.
6. Return to the left triplet and pull the switch which moves the stone block
for the middle triplet.
7. Move the middle triplet to the stone block to the right.
8. Swap to the right triplet and pull his switch to move that block up to the
lever at the top.
9. Activate the lever with the middle triplet to complete the puzzle and open
the gate for Merida.
THROUGH THE DOOR
----------------
Break the pots and then fire at the two red targets on the far wall to create a
stone pillar. Jump across to the far side and break more pots and barrels. Climb
up the broken stair way and enemies appear in the next area, but just weak ones
and you can use fire arrows for the tree-like ones and kill them all easily. The
stumpy stone type enemies also appear around the next corner where there is an
oddly perplexing puzzle to solve before continuing to the next purple mist
battle.
PUZZLE
------
Fire arrows at the two shields on either side of the gated doorway to light up 4
round boards high up in the room to the right of the door. Arriving at the
puzzle the third board is already lit. Fire at right shield and it makes the
second one red. Fire again at right shield and it responds with each shield in
turn 1, 2, 3, 4. The third one will stay lit but the rest stay red.
The solution to the puzzle is to fire at right shield and then at the left.
Fire at the right shield to get the red effect and then the left shield to light
the same round board. When all four are lit up the gate is opened. Enter the
room and open the chest for a magnificent bow. This is the [URSINIELEASH BATTLE
BOW] and damage with all bows is increased! You'll gain the trophy: Bowlicious.
Collect all bows.
Walk right, past the four glowing round boards on the wall, to arrive at a
boss battle.
PURPLE MIST
-----------
This battle is the toughest yet because the giant enemies are weak to wind,
fire and ice and you can only equip one element at a time. Four weak to wind
golems appear first and if you defeat them quickly you'll then get four weak to
fire golems. After that, four weak to ice giants appear and more wind ones.
Start by using wind Charged shots on the two of that appear at the upper left
corner, and at the far right of the room at the beginning of the battle.
Sometimes you might be lucky and only one wind monster appears giving you a head
start! Then use sword attacks on the weak to fire monsters, or fire Charged
shots if you can manage that. Switch to ice when the red fiery giants appear and
back away firing arrows and dodging. There is no hiding place here and the arena
is hedged with spikes.
This is very hard on Brave mode and it's probably best to destroy the more
dangerous icy giants as quickly as possible: target them once you've finished
with the first wave of weak to wind giants. It's also difficult to see where
Merida is in a small dark room and surrounded by huge giants! If you're not fast
enough you'll end up with about 10-12 giants all focussed on smashing you to
bits. You need ALL upgrades for this battle - but I've said that before!
After the battle, smash the pots in the upper left corner and access the
merchant if you wish.
BOULDER PUZZLE
--------------
Head through an opening to the right and follow the wide pathway breaking pots
and barrels as you go. You can return to the merchant if you want to spend this
gold. The path turns upwards and a portcullis blocks a lighted room. Before
reaching it break the barrels blocking the path and watch out for three or four
dumpy enemies that appear.
Step on the pressure plate on the floor and a large boulder will come rolling
down crossing over that plate and heading over the edge into oblivion. However,
when standing on the platform you will make another boulder move, which slowly
raises the portcullis.
Now it is time to demonstrate your agility! Stand on the plate and wait for the
boulder to pass and double jump up and over it, jumping back down onto the
plate. Move to stand on it at the last second after the boulder has rolled past
and wait until the last second to move off. Then, wait as long as you dare (or
until the portcullis is fully open) and then roll (using L1 twice to roll as
fast as possible) and squeeze under the portcullis.
Once inside open the treasure chest for the [TORN ATTIRE] outfit. The boulder
has gone now so walk to the left and up the stairs. Jump on a stone block and
then across the gap to the central area to confront the purple mist!
PURPLE MIST AND ELEVATOR
------------------------
No worries about the wind, fire and ice monsters here as mother turns up and you
can just whack them all with ease. There are a few red boars and trees too but
none of the monsters will pose any threat, even in Brave mode. They will drop
plenty of healing potions too so health is not an issue at all.
After the battle leave the area at the top right corner where a convenient stone
platform awaits. Break some pots in the next room and move onto a large wooden
floor.
This turns out to be a kind of elevator and it will slowly move upwards as
groups of enemies attack. There's a break between each group for you to catch
your breath. First of all shadow wolf type enemies will appear as the floor
starts to move upwards. Stand in the middle of the floor and use the Slam attack
on them. Two groups of six or so appear in turns.
After defeating them some small dumpy enemies attack and again you can use the
Slam attack. The floor continues to move upwards and the final group comprises
fire trees and the small weak to earth enemies appear. Charged shot arrows are
best for this group.
When the elevator stops walk up to where you see green and white lights.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
................................ FINAL BATTLE .................................
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are four pillars at the back of the battle area representing all four
charms. You are on a large flat rock and it's easy to run around and dodge
enemies for the first two stages of this battle. If you die during a stage
you'll be back at the previous pillar so that gives you a pause to rethink!
PILLAR ONE
-----------
A large white wolf with a few minions, (smaller wolves and white boars) is the
first attacker. It blasts you with ice but is easy to avoid. Use fire charm
arrows on these enemies. A pillar will then appear with a health bar at the top.
All you have to do is keep hitting it until you've smashed it to bits before the
next stage of the battle can begin, but change to the ice charm before the
pillar falls.
PILLAR TWO
----------
Next you will face some fire monsters and you'll need the ice charm. A very
large and powerful fire boar charges straight for you at the start of the
battle. There are some smaller boars as well as a few trees that are weak to
fire and they will help by dropping health potions, but don't bother targeting
the trees: concentrate ice arrows on the large boar. You'll need to run around
dodging its dangerous charge or it can kill you pretty quickly.
Don't let the weaker enemies kill you after you've downed the fire boar! Oops!
Destroy the fire pillar after this and change to the earth charm to prepare for
the next stage.
PILLAR THREE
------------
The terrain is now more dangerous with gaps between the rocky ground and the
enemies are all air-borne which makes things a bit trickier to manage. Change to
earth charm attacks and concentrate on the big bird. The smaller ones will drop
healing potions if you need them: which you will. This battle is also more
awkward because you cannot see how much damage you're doing to the Harpy.
In the end I stopped using Charged shots and just kept firing and dodging its
purple spray attack. After this another pillar appears for you to smash up.
PILLAR FOUR
-----------
The fourth stage requires you to climb up a rough pathway of stone platforms
with minor enemies attacking from each section. The boss awaits on the top
ledge.
Kill the small fry first before proceeding to the next ledge. There are those
annoying weak to fire skeleton enemies that shoot off spears when they explode,
as well as birds that are weak to earth attacks, and golems: all weak to wind.
However, it's best to move upwards as fast as you can because more enemies will
appear if you wait too long.
As you climb higher and get closer to the boss you are in danger from rocks
thrown down at you. Be really careful jumping the gap from the fourth ledge to
the fifth and wait for the boss to chuck a rock before you jump. A large golem
to the left of this gap can also hit you with a rock.
Stop on the platform just in front of the one the boss is on and you can shoot
Charged shots at his helpers, staying safe from his rocks. Kill them all, or at
least, most of them, (make sure his companion golem is no more} and jump up to
finish him off with your sword. You'll need to have lowered the monster's health
considerably first, with your wind Charged shots. Be careful how you approach
this final jump as you don't want to get hit by his rock while jumping!
There's a final pillar to attack: a green one this time.
After this you get the nicely named trophy: GREAT SCOT.
And ... that is it after a final cheerful monologue from Merida.

VI. TROPHY GUIDE ....................................................... *TROP
================================================================================
There are 29 Bronze Trophies, 13 Silver Trophies, 2 Gold Trophies, and 1
Platinum Trophy. Many trophies will be gained just from playing and beating the
game, but a few require a special effort. The hardest ones to obtain are:
Gotta snag 'em all - expensive to obtain
Untouchable - needs concentration to avoid being damaged
Domination - takes time to trigger 250 power attacks
Gaelic Hero - tough to beat the game on Brave difficulty
I've divided them into three categories and listed the trophies alphabetically.
Progression Trophies - acquired as part of beating the game.
Collectibles Trophies - finding certain items.
Challenge Trophies - battle skills and other challenges that might need some
special effort.
It took me two playthroughs to get all the trophies. The first, with some
revisits to various stages, for all the trophies except the Gaelic Hero, and
then the second game on Brave difficulty once I knew what to do and where to go.

--- Domination --- SILVER
Description : Defeat 250 enemies using power attack.
Type : Challenge
Details : That's a lot of enemies and this is tough to complete as you need
that purple orb to be full before you can use the power attack. Playing on
harder difficulty will help as you'll receive more damage. In a boss battle
allow yourself to get damaged (pick a fight where health potions are plentiful)
and you should be able to use the attack many times in just one battle.
Use the power attack whenever you see the option to do so!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--- Gaelic hero --- GOLD
Description : Defeat the game on Brave difficulty, without changing it
Type : Challenge
Details : The toughest challenge of the game. Good luck!
RULE - YOU MUST NOT CHANGE THE DIFFICULTY!
If you're an experienced gamer you could do this on your first game and then mop
up the rest of the trophies without needing to play it again. If you have a
second player to take on the role of the Coop Wisp that would make it easier
too. Otherwise, I'd recommend getting all the other trophies first and then
starting the game again on Brave difficulty.
For me the key upgrades to get as soon as possible were Dodge, Health Potions,
and Charged Shot, with the upgrade to decrease the time it takes to charge. I
also bought the first Collection Range upgrade as I wanted enough cash to keep
buying upgrades and make Merida as strong as possible as fast as possible to
avoid too many fails at the boss battles!
As I'm not that skilled a gamer I retreated from half way through the first
stage when I had enough resources to purchase these basic upgrades. Ideally get
the basic Power attack too so you are well protected for the battle with ice
wolves and a golem after helping Queen Elinor. All these will make those early
boss battles much easier.
For the second stage you'll need upgraded earth and fire Charged shots for boss
battles before you get the Wind charm. That means some replaying to raise enough
cash to buy these upgrades. A second upgrade to Health Potions is nice too.
To deal with the boss of the fourth stage: Buried Passage, you'll need upgraded
Charged shot: wind, ideally to the maximum, and the Slam Shot also upgraded
three times. That's costly and will require some repeat visits to get enough
cash. Power Attack needs some upgrading too, with all charm upgrades.
After that the priority is to get the new charm Charged Shot and Power Attacks
before putting gold into the extra upgrades available, and of course to find all
the Tapestry upgrades and Statues of Fergus to gain the maximum amount of coins.
Not forgetting slashing every bit of breakable scenery for coins!
By the time you reach the final stage you will need ALL Merida's upgrades to be
completed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Get out of my way --- BRONZE
Description : As Elinor, charge 5 enemies with a single charge attack.
Type : Challenge
Details : You'll probably do this without even noticing. It's not hard to
charge 5 enemies at once with Elinor given her size.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Gotta snag 'em all --- SILVER
Description : Purchase all upgrades.
Type : Collectible
Details : It is time-consuming and expensive to get this trophy and you must
buy all the Coop Wisp upgrades as well as Merida's. Revisiting areas to collect
more coins is required to earn enough cash. Break all the Statues of Fergus and
attack the scenery (pots, barrels, flowers, snow mounds, dead trees and poles)
for extra gold. And of course, destroy all enemies for the gold they drop. The
best places to revisit are those with the most Statues of Fergus : Chilled Creek
has 14, Murky Chasm and Buried Passage have 13.
(It took me two playthroughs and a number of additional revisits to acquire
enough gold for this trophy.)

Swamp of Shadows is the best place to try this and set the game to easy to make it even easier! Start from the beginning of the stage and continue until you get the total. If you fail start again and it's a fast stage to go through: you don't have to do the puzzle a second time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Wall to wall carpeting --- SILVER Description : Complete all tapestries.
