Version Information ============================================================================== 1.00 First Released Version (7/27/2005) ============================================================================== I. Introduction ============================================================================== "Donald Duck's Playground?" I hear you ask of me. "Why a child's game, Frankomatic?" The answer is very simple, my friends. I have fond memories of this game from when I was a young lad, and there were no FAQs for it up on the site. I've decided to change this travesty to justice with this guide. What's the story, you ask? Well, Donald has always had a record of being kind of a jerk with a short temper. So, in order to change his public image, he's decided to build a playground for his ever annoying nephews! Of course, this will require money, which will require getting a job, which is where you come in. Plug your controller into Port 2 on your C64 and let's help Donald build that playground! If you'd like to see a specific job or store's entry, enter that handy 2 letter code shown in the table of contents after hitting ctrl-F and you'll jump right to it! ============================================================================== II. The Town ============================================================================== The first screen you see after booting up the game and choosing your difficulty is Donald standing in the middle of the town's street. To your right are the jobs you can get, in order from top to bottom: Railroad Switcher, Toy Store, Fruit Sorter, and Airport Baggage. Just walk into whichever job you'd like to take to move to that job's screen. On the left are the three stores you can visit. Also in order from top to bottom: Junk shop, Hardware shop, Five and Dime store. Walk into the door of the shop you'd like to browse to go to that shop's screen. Up at the top you'll find some train tracks. These don't actually do anything on this screen aside from cause you to have to pause for a moment as Donald looks both ways before crossing. On the far side of these is where your playground is located. Just walk past and keep going north to get there and build or play! ============================================================================== III. Jobs ============================================================================== Each of the four jobs you can have in this game has its own set of controls which will be listed at the begining of its section. Something that is common for all four games is the fact that you can select how long of a shift you'd like to work. These can range from one to eight minutes, with longer shifts giving you more opportunites to make or lose money. With that out of the way, let's get moving onto the first job. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fruit Sorter (FS) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls --------- Move the Joystick: Move Donald left and right Fire Button: Drop the carried fruit Job Guide ---------- In this Job you'll be controlling Donald in front of three bins, labelled from left to right: Watermelon, Pumpkin, Orange. After choosing your shift length, you'll see a fruit fly onto the screen from the truck on the right. You need to catch this fruit and drop it into the appropriate bin. For each fruit you drop into the correct bin, you earn one penny. For every fruit you miss or drop into the wrong bin, you lose a bit of time as the wrecked fruit scrolls off the conveyor belt and Donald yells at you. You obviously won't make a whole lot of money in one go on this one, but with a full 8 minute shift and a little practice to get fast at sorting and dropping, you can make pretty steady cash. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Toy Store (TS) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls --------- Move the Joystick: Move Donald/Switch Fire Button: Grab Toy/Grab Ladder/Deposit Toy or Ladder/Grab Switch Job Guide ---------- What you'll see on the screen here is a shelf with various toys on it, a ladder which you can crab and move, a conveyor belt on the right with a toy on it, and a lever on the left. The object of this game is to put the toys on the shelf with the ones they match. Of course, there's also a timer for when the train will be passing. You need to pull the lever before it passes to close the shelves, or else the shaking will make some toys fall, causing your pay to be docked. You'll also lose some money if you try to put a toy in the wrong place. To do this properly, you need to move the ladder to the left of the toy on the conveyor belt and set it there, grab the toy, take it up to the appropriate place, and push the fire button. You will get five cents for every toy put in it's proper place. The fact that you get five cents makes this game more profitable than fruit sorting... assuming you're fast and accurate enough to avoid dropping any toys or having the train knock the toys off the shelves. Also, remember that both the color and type must match to put a toy away, so trying to put a red train with the black ones will result in a broken toy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Railroad Switcher (RS) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls --------- Move the Joystick: Move Donald/Flip Switch Fire Button: Grab Switch Job Guide ---------- Remember the annoying train from the Toy Store? Now you get to control it! Sadly, you can't crash it. Instead you're charged with using the switches to get the train to whatever town you're supposed to go to for pick up, then to the town you need to go to for delivery. The town you need to hit will both be shown at the bottom of the screen and will flash on the railroad map, then the train will start moving and it's up to you to get it to the destination. You must make a full delivery to get paid (Fifteen cents to be exact), so time is of the essence. There's no way to lose money in this, so the only thing you'll waste if you do poorly is your time. That makes this one a pretty safe job to take if you're worried about losing money, but still want to make a lot fast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Airport Baggage (AB) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls --------- Move the Joystick: Move Donald/Aim towards baggage truck Fire Button: Pick up/Throw box Job Guide ---------- Donald will be standing in front of a conveyor belt with boxes slowly moving past him. After watching a planeland, a baggage truck with four segments will start moving past slowly. Each segment is labeled with a three letter code, as is each box. The object is to grab a box and toss it into the appropriate section, earning three cents upon success. Now after a few seconds, the truck will drive off the screen and you'll have to wait for a little bit as the baggage is loaded. Another truck will drive up soon and the game will continue. The game will not let you throw a box into the wrong container, so all you lose is time if you mess up. This is a pretty simple game to play, and at 3 cents a pop, it's not bad money, either. This is one of my favorite games for making quick money along with Toy Store. ============================================================================== IV. Stores ============================================================================== Ah, the stores. The place where you get all of your playground toys. In this section I will make a list of the inventory of all the stores, the prices for their items, and the playing actions the nephews will perform on them when you put them in your playground. I'll also list a section on the paying "game", though it's fairly simple. Let's get this party started, eh? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Five and Dime (FD) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run by Minnie and with fairly cheap prices, the Five and Dime has mainly items you would normally think of as toys, not things that require a bit of imagination like the junk shop. Trampoline ----------- Price: $0.25 Play: Bounce on it. Slide (Diagonal) ----------------- Price: $0.01 Play: Slide down. Slide (Vertical) ----------------- Price: $0.05 Play: Slide down. Rings ------ Price: $0.05 Play: Grab on and swing. Toy Horse ---------- Price: $0.10 Play: Giddy-up! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hardware (HW) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run by Mickey, the prices in the Hardware store are somewhat more expensive for some items than the Five and Dime or the Junk Shop. Be careful to shop around, as you might find some items cheaper elsewhere. Slide (Vertical) ----------------- Price: $0.25 Play: Slide down. Monkey Bars ------------ Price: $0.10 Play: Cross the square on them instead of on foot. High Bar --------- Price: $0.10 Play: Grab on and swing. Ladder ------- Price: $0.10 Play: Climb up. Swing ------ Price: $0.25 Play: Hop on and swing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Junk (JK) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run by Goofy, the Junk Shop offers a somewhat diverse selection of items for very cheap prices. Tire ----- Price: $0.01 Play: Hop in and swing. Ship's Wheel ------------- Price: $0.05 Play: Steer the ship! Cargo Net ---------- Price: $0.10 Play: Climb Up. Slide (Diagonal) ----------------- Price: $0.05 Play: Slide Down, duh. Old Box -------- Price: $0.05 Play: Hop the Box! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ How to Pay (HP) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So you wanna buy something, eh? When you decide to pay, a screen showing your various denominations of money on the bottom and the price you owe on the top comes up. What you need to do is grab some money from the bottom and move it up top. Either exact change or more than exact will work. If you give them more than they ask for, the cash register up top will open and you will be asked to make change for yourself. All simple mathematics, really. Now that wasn't so hard, was it? ============================================================================== V. The Playground ============================================================================== The Playground is, in fact, a three level monstrosity. When you first enter the area, any items that you've bought will be spread about rather randomly as one of Donald's nephews enters in the bottom right corner. If you would like to move the items around, press F5. Upon doing this, you'll be presented with an arrow. If you move this over an item and press the fire button, you'll pick that object up and can move it around. When you get it to the square you want it in, press the button again to set it back down. Now, when constructing your playground, there are only two real things to keep in mind. One is that the only way to move to the upper levels is with a ladder or a cargo net. The other is that the only one to move back down is with one of the slides. So, basically, you want a slide on the bottom and middle levels and a ladder on the bottom and middle levels as well. Once you're done building, you can press F5 to return to being one of the nephews. You can move around with the joystick, but only to the left and right unless there's a ladder or slide in or under your current location. To use the toy you happen to be near, press the fire button. When you tire of it, press the fire button again to stop. That pretty much covers everything you can do in the playground. Enjoy the fruit of your hard work! ============================================================================== VI. Future Additions ============================================================================== This guide is 100% complete, making it the most comprehensive guide for Donald Duck's Plaground on the Internet. I really, really need to take a deep look at my life now that I've done this. ============================================================================== VII.
