Introduction ============================================================================== After another fairly long disappearance, Frankomatic has returned to the FAQing scene! Whilst being away from home and unable to work on my unfinished Sword of the Samurai FAQ, I've decided to delight the population of the C64 gaming world by writing up a sequel to my infamous Beach-Head guide. So, Beach Head 2, The Dictator Strikes Back. Ignoring the obvious Star Wars reference (Unfortunately, Beach Head III, Return of the Allies, never came to be as far as I know), this game is an improvement over the old version for two reasons. The first is that you can play as the dictator if you wish, which leads right into the second point: head to head multiplayer action. The joystick in port 2 controls the allies, while port 1 controls the dictator. As for the backstory... eh, it's not all that important. Something about rescuing hostages and offing the dictator once and for all or some such. Just get past this introduction block and get to killing your friends, alright? Don't forget about the hanndy search function in the table of contents. To skip to a specific game section, hit ctrl-F and search for the 2 letter code listed. Now, on with the show! ============================================================================== II. Game Segments ============================================================================== Much like the prequel, each section has its own controls for each side, so I'll list them in each section rather than at the top. The main menu is simple enough to figure out this time around, so I think I can feel safe in letting you work it out yourselves. Sadly, you do have to listen to the song for a while before the choices come up, I've not found a way to make it move faster. If you'd like to practice a specific section, choose Practice (F3) after your skill level/number of players, then the appropriate game section. This will let you play starting from that section, let's not waste any more words and get on with the main part of this, eh? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Attack (AT) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Allies Controls ---------------- Move the Joystick (Helicopter): Move the copter in all directions Fire Button (Helicopter): Drop a Paratrooper Fire Button (Behind wall): Have a soldier charge Move Joystick (Soldier Visible): Move Soldier Fire Button (Charging Turret): Throw a Grenade Dictator Controls ------------------ Moving the Joystick: Aim Turret Fire Button: Unleash Stream of Death Section Guide - Allies ----------------------- The first section of the game and things are already rather stacked against you! What you see first is a helicopter at the top of the screen which you can move about. Below you are four walls, then a bit of space, then 2 walls, then some more space, then a last wall with a turret in the middle. That is your objective. Pressing the fire button will cause a paratrooper to jump from the helicopter and parachute down to the ground. Unless, of course, you have the chopper too low, in which case they'll just smack into the ground and die. When they land, they'll run towards the closest wall to take cover. The turret, meanwhile, will try to gun them down before they make it. For each soldier that makes it to the wall, you gain 200 points, so try not to kill too many of them. Once they're all dropped, the chopper will fly off and we'll move on to the next objective: getting closer to the fortress. One last note for this part though, the turret can't hit your guys in the air, but as soon as they touch the ground, they're fair game, so try not to drop them from too high up. One of your soldiers will yell "Follow me, Men!" and you'll see a yellow line moving along the sides of the rear walls. When you press the Fire Button, a soldier will move from the wall the yellow line is on to the space between them. Pressing left or right will make them charge to the left front wall or the right front wall respectively. Don't take too much time doing this, they're easy targets while they're just standing there. You get 2000 points for each soldier that survives to the front wall. Once all the soldiers have either made it to the wall or gotten shot, the yellow bar will move forward to the next set of walls if anyone survived. This time, pressing the fire button alone will give you a controllable soldier that will run out from the side of the wall. You want to have him charge for the turret. Once you get about halfway to the turret, you can throw a grenade with the fire button. Destroying the turret and getting in nets you 8000 points, while just getting in through the frontmost wall gets you 3000. Once all the remaining soldiers have made their charges, the round will end and the person with the most points wins. One last trick: At the front wall, pressing down and fire at the same time causes a soldier to hop the wall and make an automatic, diagonal charge towards the turret. This can catch the dictator player off guard if executed properly, though you lose the chance to destroy the turret. Section Guide - Dictator ------------------------- Your job is much less difficult than the allies. See those little soldiers? Shoot them. Don't let any of them get to you. If you can get them while they're running from the back walls to the front, you get a nice 3000 point bonus. If you get them while they're charging your turret directly, you get 7500. Have fun with your target practice, now! The only real issues of contention here are that when you move the joystick DOWN, the turret aims UP, and vice versa, so keep that in mind. Also, the bullets leave neat little trails in the ground as you fire about randomly, so it can be kinda distracting if you like making shapes. Now, get killing! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rescue (RE) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Allies Controls ---------------- Move Joystick: Aim Turret Fire Button: Shoot at stuff Dictator Controls ------------------ Up: Bring out rock droppy guy Down: Bring out mine layer guy Right: Bring out tank Left: Bring out gun truck Fire: Activate chosen direction/drop rock/lay mine Section Guide - Allies ----------------------- Now you get to control the turret! There are twenty prisoners that you need to try to help get across the screen by destroying all the things the dictator decides to throw at you. Now some of these are more immediate threats than others, so let's run through what we'll see. Rock Dropper: This guy is obnoxious to hit before he's up and dropping a rock, since all you can see is a little dot over the rear wall. However, it isn't always necessary to off him right away. The prisoners move -insanely- slow, which makes it hard for the dictator to time when to drop things properly. Plus, if you shoot the prisoner, he'll stop and whine at you, giving you a few extra seconds to deal with things. He's also worth 600 points. Mine Layer: Easier to hit than the rock dropper, and much more of a threat. He looks like a little line at first, but this then opens up and a little man drops a small mine in the prisoner's path. -Always- shoot the mine first if you can, since your prisoner will stop for nothing. Worth 600 points. Tank: Easiest to deal with as it's slow and doesn't shoot or anything. It just slowly moves from right to left to try and run the prisoner down. It's also a large target so it's easy to destroy. Low priority unless it starts getting close to the prisoner. Worth 600 points. Gun Truck: Moves from Left to Right closer to the turret. If it lines up with the prisoner, it'll shoot him. Easy enough to hit, but quick, so watch out for it. Worth 600 points. Getting the prisoners across the field is the most lucrative in terms of points (about 12000 points each), so try to keep as many alive as you possibly can. Section Guide - Dictator ------------------------- Each prisoner you kill is worth 19500 points, so even if you got mauled during the Attack section, you can catch up easily here. If you want to see how each of your traps works, just look up a little bit where I've already described them. The best advice I can give here is to just try to overwhelm the allies. Keep stuff coming endlessly. The mines your minelayer can set are really difficult to shoot and the gun truck is faster than most people give it credit for. Even the tank can come in handy when the prisoner is near the right side of the screen. Just keep the pressure on and you'll most likely come out in the lead for this section. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Escape (ES) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Allies Controls ---------------- Move Joystick (Hostage Loading Screen): Load/unload Hostages Fire Button (Hostage Loading Screen): Take Off Move Joystick: Move Helicopter Fire Button: Fire Dictator Controls ------------------ Move Joystick: Move Tanks Fire Button: Fire Section Guide - Allies ----------------------- Now it's time to lead the hostages to safety! The first thing you do is decide how many you're going to load onto your helicopter in one go. This, mainly, will decide how many trips you get to make. be warned that while you'll get more points for more hostages if you make it, your opponent will get more for shooting you down as well. You can move the chopper up, down, left, or right. You can also attack the Dictator's forces with the fire button. So, basically, it's a head to head shooter against the other player. You get two shots per chopper load to get the hostages out. That's really all I can say about this section. Well, that, and make sure you go UNDER the tall bridges, otherwise you'll crash. Section Guide - Dictator ------------------------- This particular game isn't quite as overwhelmingly in your favor as the last two have been, but it takes more skill from the allied player to play. Your tanks can only move left or right, but you can also fire out of the various bunkers and towers scattered about as well. Just do your best to shoot those allied choppers down, you can make up any lost ground in the final section if you need to. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Battle (BA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls - Both Sides ---------------------- Move Joystick Up/Down: Move your character up and down his ledge Move Joystick Left/Right: Duck/Jump Fire Button: Throw a dagger Section Guide -------------- This is it, the final duel, the climatic knife fight over a raging river! This battle is perfectly even, one ally against the dictator himself. Controls are exactly the same for both people, so it's just a matter of waiting for your opponent to leave himself open. The Dictator's on the left, the Ally is on the right. Also note that aside from throwing a dagger straight across, you can angle them up or down slightly by pressing the appropriate direction as you hit the button. Each strike with a knife is worth 6000 points. Four hits makes your opponent fall, also worth 6000 points. There are 9 rounds in total, which can make for a large amount of points if you can sweep your opponent. Now, Finish Him! The best times to throw are when you can force your opponent to have to move a certain way, or if you have good timing, right after a hit. If you do it properly, you can hit them four times before they can react. Also, a mistimed jump can leave you -way- open, so don't do it unless you're sure you're not going to get nailed in the middle of it. ============================================================================== III.
