Beastie Feastie FAQ version 1.0.0 copyright 2004 by Andrew Schultz schultza@earthlink.net ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION 2. CONTROLS/POINTS/ENEMIES 3. STRATEGIES 4. LEVELS(search #X for a particular map) 5. VERSIONS 6. CREDITS ================================ 1. INTRODUCTION The MAME hardware lumps this game in with 'The Glob' and 'Super Glob.' So I guess it had a lot of reincarnations. In Beastie Feastie, you play Toby, a blue blob. He bounces around a screen and uses elevators to get to all the snacks on six levels. There isn't much of a maze but occasionally you have to take several elevators to get to the food. There are various animals that will try to catch him. Toby must grab the ceiling and drop on them. The smarter animals can also push the elevators' call buttons and ride them. This is a problem because the elevator can crush Toby. More often, though, Toby can crush enemies with the elevator. It'll take a few seconds for them to regenerate. Through all this there's a time limit of less than 168 seconds--the game speeds up with each level, and Toby loses energy faster if he's hanging on the ceiling. You'll enjoy this game a lot more if you don't take games seriously, i.e. it's got some cute levels and a funny little premise, but it gets nasty if you go in for strategy. It's all so randomized. But the first few levels are breezy, and there's all this food to eat, you know? The levels loop through a cycle of 24. They get prohibitively faster until it's tough to get on an elevator or calculate when bad guys will do anything. Then, back at the start, the food you pick up is invisible. You'll spend most of your time on the ceiling, waiting for the least horrendous time as the monsters get rather too smart. At first, the too-fast levels will seem too fast and unfair(they are--there's no time to react to essentially random monster moves and so you can't really get into the game flow) but if you happen to get any good at the later levels, the first will seem unbearably dreary and slow. Then some later levels induce annoying randomness that will force you to sit and watch as your bonus gets eaten up. But it's fun for a short bit. Play with infinite lives, get to the levels where the snacks are invisible, and then give it up. 2. CONTROLS/POINTS/ENEMIES Beastie Feastie isn't too hard to control--at least until the speed cranks up. You can move left or right and with one button(ctrl on MAME) climb the ceiling and with the other(Alt) ring for an elevator. You can climb on a ceiling with a call bell above. Climbing on the ceiling allows you to drop when you release the button and crush the enemy below. It also renders you invulnerable to passing elevators. If there's no wall on the side of the screen, you can wrap to the other side. You'll see Toby cut in half near the edge, and there is one off-screen square. The one problem with this is that enemies tend to hang around there. You can also be crushed be elevators you call or that enemies ride on. There's a bit of leeway here, but generally if a horizontal green bit smacks you on the head, you're toast. Similar logic applies to your enemies. You can run into them safely(for you, anyway) as you move an elevator. But if you stop and they run into you, you're toast. You can stop and reverse your elevator in mid flight. This is in fact a good way to crush a monster that's passed by, although you may engage in a simultaneous back-and-forthing. for a bit. GATOR 55 walks back and forth[slower] FROGGY 66 can push bottons BUNNY 77 can ride in elevators MONKEY 88 can ride and push buttons[as fast] PORKER 99 like monkey but can also track/avoid you[faster] 3. STRATEGIES First--remember which button is which. Sounds silly, but I confuse them when things get fast. Next--don't stand around just after killing something. Go to the other side of the elevator. They always regenerate sooner than you think they will. Remember also that your blob jumps and doesn't glide. So he commits himself a bit when he makes a move. Ergo: don't run too hard at the animals, or you'll get stuck. Getting through the levels quickly rapidly becomes a priority. There's usually a dead end or two on the later levels--locate the most out of the way one and finish that last. If you squash a monster on the way up, you might not want to go messing around on his level. Try another one, because if you leave where you killed him, he'll be a nuisance when he resurrects as your way back on the elevator will be blocked. Sometimes you will want to draw the smarter monsters away from the elevator either to leapfrog over them or to squash them. If a platform has two elevators you can leave from, try to switch between the two. That will allow you not to have to worry about monsters you regenerate when squashing them. In some cases you'll have to lean on the button to buzz the elevator. Don't wait to ring the bell for an elevator until you need it. Doing so beforehand saves time, and with the elevator in motion, the animals can't buzz it to where they are. On faster levels you'll need to anticipate your moves because they're so fast. It's possible to miss a very easy turn-off or shuck the blob one square too far in either direction. Avoiding monsters by clearing out one level without fruit is more energy efficient then going in some predetermined order. This advice breaks down when the level is a bit one way but as elevator rides are fairly quick, wasting a bit of time on one is much better than wasting time on the ceiling waiting for random monsters to bounce the right way. Enemies can slip under the top of the elevator and get at you if you are going up and getting off. Also beware if two enemies are on one elevator--if there's another one that will serve the purpose near you, use that, as no-one's there(cue Dick Vitale's 'I'm not very good at math baby, but if one person's triple teamed...') Watch out trying to time pigs, etc. They tend to buzz when there's no button there, and if you don't wait until you're sure the pig is going to run under you. It's tough to catch this on the faster levels, but it's necessary. With a monster near the elevator you may want to try to overshoot if it looks like you'll meet them on the way up. The computer gives you the kill if you're moving in the elevator but can surprise you if you're staying still. It's especially very tough to tell on the harder levels but worth the 10 points energy to make sure of things. Hanging on the ceiling in the side zones where you can't see should only be a last resort. An elevator shaft is the worst place to stand at, because even if you're in the elevator, an animal hitting the call button will wipe you out. But you can(and are advised to) do the same to them. You can also stand on the ceiling in a shaft to gain an advantage--especially advisable if it looks like it'll be a tie when you reach the monsters. Have the button pressed in reserve to be safe if you are reaching the top/bottom level the elevator can go to. 4. However there is a neat way and a messy way to do things. The messy way: clear things off floor by floor. The neat way: take one elevator, step out a bit for the fruit, and go back in. The middle is a bit awkward, but the sides are so quick you won't mind. The gators here shouldn't be too tough to outfox, and if you must squish one, it won't regenerate for a long time. ##2 =============== o# # ... #...# ... =====E===E===== XXXX E EOXXXX XXXX E...E XXXX =====E===E===== oE E ... The wide areas may take a while to get around, and the narrow ones may raise problems negotiating the enemies. Fortunately in the narrow ones you can squash the enemy and get out. In the wide ones you may have to dither to drop on the gators but there's no real risk. At the bottom, ring the bell before getting the pears on the right to save a bit of time. You can also switch between elevator banks and ring the buzzers to avoid problems with the enemies turning up as you climb onto the elevator or just wait for them and drop on them. ##3 ============================= X E o . . . . . . You'll also, more importantly, get your first look at monkeys. Go right for the cherries, take the elevator up(a monkey may have buzzed it, but no big deal) and take out the levels as you go up. Don't try too hard to squash a bad guy. It is in fact better to nail a bad guy when he's on the left. You'll probably need to nail bad guys twice--once to get to the left, once to get back. There's some small risk here you'll run on an elevator just as the monkey hits the call bell, but if you worry about that you'll forget the more immediate stuff. And the problem is more apparent in later levels anyway. ##4 ============================= X E o o E X . . . E . . . E . . . ==========E=======E========== E # o o # E E # . . . # . . I've found that the best strategy is to go right ASAP--any delay and you'll run into the monster as he appears--or just wait to deal with him. You could also take the elevator up a floor first thing, but the same problem will still exist. Notice also that there are some partially hidden parts in this level--here it's the ham at the center. So--clear out the bottom two levels, then the top two, then drop down the center elevators to knock out everything else. Cycle off to the side on the top levels as monkeys do appear vaguely interested in running after you. ##5 ============================= X # o E o o # X X # . . . . Be sure not to crush them over the elevator as this can cause them to bounce back rather sharply. You can divide this level into two parts, and it's best to pick up the bananas on the first three stories first. Note that because there are so many bunnies around, they may mess with the elevators, but they can't call them. You can render them mostly harmless for a while by pushing the call button just to your right. And you'll have an elevator to get to the top once you complete the bottom half. ##6 ============================= X o # XXX E o X X # . . . XXX . . . Fortunately they're not very critical, but they can be a bit dangerous when the bunnies start gallivanting around them. Ring the bell, right, left, up, right, left. Clear out the left of levels 5 and 6 in the same way. You can crush the gator with the elevator, get the fruit, and get back in time. Then you can clear out the center levels--make sure you have easy access to a center elevator to make the trip smooth, although the side elevators are about as safe, if a bit roundabout. You can then clear out the right the same way you cleared out the left(get the fifth with the rabbit last.) There's only one monkey to worry about, so keep an eye on him. ##7 ============================= X o E E E E o X X E . . E . . . E . . E X ====E=====E=======E=====E==== X E # oXXXo # E X . You can try to picture it as a level that doesn't really wrap but instead has the center act as the side. Clearing the bottom is a good start, and then you can go to the top. You really have to watch for the center elevators here as the monkeys can run around quite a bit. Middle levels should be cleared in one swoop. You should try to look for less populated ones as you start. ##8 ============================= E o| . . You'll need to hang on the ceiling quite a bit to kill and get by some. Remember to buzz the elevator before your initial trip right. You'll probably want to go to the fourth floor then, left, up, and left. There are three dead ends where you'll need to backtrack: the sixth floor(right,) third floor down to the second(left) and the long bit at the end for the final carrot(fourth left, up to fifth, left down to second.) For the sixth level you will want to try to keep the bunny boxed in once you leave, since it can't call the elevator. Next I'd recommend the second/third level bit. There should be a pig to deal with for the last bit, and you may have to cling to the ceiling more than you'd like. ##10 ============================= X o E X X . . . . . . . Otherwise you may go another square, which can be lethal. Ring the bell, get the grapes, go up one level(it's unguarded right now.) Try to clear the third level soon as only the fourth/fifth are directly connected with the sixth. ##11 ============================= | E o . . . . . | . . . . You'll need to get by the porker on the left first and in fact you might want to go right to see if he comes over--you may have to kill him twice. Then go up a floor and wrap to get some candy canes. The third floor shouldn't be too tough--go up to the fifth level to take out the central bit and go back down to the fourth level where you can take the left elevator down. Note the two nasty little enclaves you just cleared, as you can't reach them from *just* above or below. The right elevator lets you wrap to clear the fifth floor, and the sixth level should be a relatively straight shot. ##12 ============================= # . . . . . . # . . . ==================E========== E o| E . . . . . . They may hijack the elevators and force you to climb on the ceiling a bit, but this level tests your reflexes more than your planning. Because there's a porker right in front of you. Going straight right gets the porker hot on your tail, and even if you crush him, he will regenerate and annoy you. So wait and draw him left and squash him. Buzz and go left so that you can drop on the porker if need be, and he can't take the elevator without getting by you, which he won't. ##14 ============================= E XXX . E . . Everything else is pretty simple--you can see if a monster is about to bell-call or possibly come down. Pattern: right for the pears, left, and back to buzz up. There are no elevator buttons on this level. There's a lot of 'wait and see' here, as you may be marooned without an elevator if you are not careful. Obviously the first floor is easy to clear off, but as you move on up, you need to make sure there's always an elevator around. Or that you can squash the monsters in the area, grab the items, and get back on the elevator. So you may want to wait for monsters to shuffle around a bit until one level is empty, or if you see a level where the bad guy's not close, you can try to pick that off. There's a real risk of running out of time just by being stranded, and so you need to take an elevator when you can get it. At the same time you can't stand too close. I generally stay near the edges and zoom in--at least you aren't at the mercy of call buttons. The bright spot is that if you lose a guy you get to go up to the level of your choice. I'd start with the monkey level(top one) and then work my way down. The left elevator may reshuffle enemies so one level has no enemies(make that a priority) and another has two(save it 'til last.) Otherwise, you'll want to wait between the two elevators and not look too nervously at your energy level. ##22 ============================= # o o E E o o # . # E . . . Here you have the third or fourth level for choice. The last center bit is not so bad to clear out because you can smash a monster guarding the fruit, get the fruit, and return to the elevator. ##23 ============================= X E o|o E | E o X X E | E . | . . . You'll want to go up the left center last as it's a dead end, so go up the sides and warp across the screen to get the carrots. The pigs are a bit tied up, so you should be able to make it to the top right. The UL rabbit is also irrelevant. You can take the center right elevator up first--there are two carrots you can sneak in for--and then the center left(three carrots each on a different level.) Of course you'll want to do each all at once, along with the side/bottom bits. ##24 ============================= X E X X . . . . E . . . X ==================E========== X E X X . . . . . E . . . . All I can advise is--stay away from it, draw monsters there, and run back. Don't exit where you just killed a monster unless there's nowhere else to go. Monsters shuffling may render one level undefended over time so try to go for that one. After this nasty randomness, invisibility. You have to remember where everything was 24 levels ago to pass levels 25+. I refuse to describe them and the monsters therein but I will note that at least the first one is doable. Monsters will do whatever they please, but you may be able to coax them if you go into a corner--stand by the elevator and they seem almost to avoid you. End of FAQ proper ================================ 5. VERSIONS 1.0.0: submitted to GameFAQs 1/11/2004, pretty much complete 6. CREDITS The usual GameFAQs gang. They know who they are, and you should, too, because they get some SERIOUS writing done. Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Masters, RetroFreak, Snow Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, and others I forgot. War Doc for his initiative and example in writing old games up. Maybe one day all old arcade games will have guides on GameFAQs. CJayC for creating GameFAQs.com so that I could post cute little time wasting guides like this. mame.net and the cheats section for helping me replay this-- and get somewhere in it.
