WELCOME |================================================================ +=============+ Welcome to my FAQ for Star Trek. Since the game is just a shooter that goes until all your men are killed, there is no walkthrough per se. Instead it will be broken up into the game itself and strategies for survival. Input is appreciated along with constructive criticism. If you wish to e-mail me thoughts on this FAQ, better ways of doing things, other strategies, etc., feel free. OVERVIEW |=============================================================== +==============+ Star Trek is Sega's vector color game that came upon the scene in 1982. It featured a screen that was broken down into three parts. It also featured pseudo-three-dimensional graphics. The game is fast paced and in addition to keeping track of all that's going on, you must also be pretty good with the controls. This is another "sleeper" game that didn't gain a real big following. Good luck on ridding the universe of Klingons. *************** ******************************** U N I T II ********************************** *************** +==============+ | 6. THE GAME |=============================================================== +==============+ Star Trek is a combination two-dimensional, three-dimensional game. The game itself states that it is a simulation for aspiring starship officers. You control the Enterprise and your mission is to eliminate the Klingon threat in the neverending parade of sectors. In addition to the Klingon threat, you must also periodically deal with NOMAD. If you watched the TV series "Star Trek", you would know that NOMAD was a robot whose purpose was to sterilize imperfect life-forms. Of course, NOMAD was logically argued with on this point and self- destructed. When you start the game, you will be placed in the middle of a field with 1 to 3 starbases, Klingon aggressors, and perhaps even an anti- matter UFO. With your array of phasers and photon torpedoes, you are entrusted with securing that sector. ____________________ / 6.1 The Controls /__________________________________________________________ -------------------- The controls on this game are kind of complicated. It will take a little practice to get used to where they are since they aren't the most user friendly in the world. - A dial to rotate the Enterprise right and left - A impulse button (normal movement) - A photon torpedo button - A warp button (warp movement) _________________________ / 6.2 The Playing Field /_____________________________________________________ ------------------------- The playing field is divided into three different areas. The upper left area gives you your status in regard to shield energy, photo torpedoes left, and warp energy left. The upper right side gives you the "birds-eye", or radar, view of the sector and shows you where everything is at. The bottom half of the screen is what you see from your main viewing screen aboard the Enterprise. The field looks like this: +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ^ | | < [ ]__[ ]__[ ]__[ ] <-SHIELDS (GREEN) | | +--STARBASE | | < [ ]__[ ]__[ ]__[ ] <-PHOTON TORP (RED) V | | > [] | | < _________________ <-WARP ENERGY (BLUE) ^ | | | ___ | | KLINGON->V / _ \ | | |(_)| | | +->|| || | | / \___/ | | | | YOUR SHIP | | | |___________________________________________________________________| | | | | | | | | | | | ---- ---- <-PHASER SIGHT | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ You control the Enterprise and your job is to take out anything (except star- bases) that moves. Red, purple, and white triangles are Klingons. The green and blue squares are starbases (unused and used). The blue oval is the anti- matter saucer and the yellow dot during the NOMAD sectors is NOMAD. ___________________________ / 6.3 Scoring and Sectors /___________________________________________________ --------------------------- Scoring in this game is a little different. The score depends upon what sector number you are at. In addition, during the NOMAD sectors, scoring is temporarily frozen in regard to Klingons and starbases. I have made a chart, which will better illustrate how the scoring goes. +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | SEC | KLSC | KLF | SBSCO || SEC | KLSC | KLF | SBSCO | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 1 | 50 | 1 | 1000 || 21 | 475 | R | 18000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 2 | 75 | 1 | 2000 || 22 | 500 | R | 19000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 3 | 100 | 2 | 3000 || 23 | 525 | R | 20000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 4 | 125 | 2 | 4000 || 24 | 550 | R | 21000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 5 | 150 | 3 | 5000 || 25 | NOMAD | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 6 | 175 | 2 | 6000 || 26 | 575 | R | 22000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 7 | NOMAD || 27 | 600 | R | 23000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 8 | 200 | 4 | 7000 || 28 | 625 | R | 24000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 9 | 225 | 5 | 8000 || 29 | 650 | R | 25000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 10 | 250 | 5 | 9000 || 30 | 675 | R | 26000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 11 | 275 | 6 | 10000 || 31 | NOMAD | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 12 | 300 | 6 | 11000 || 32 | 700 | R | 27000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 13 | NOMAD || 33 | 725 | R | 28000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 14 | 325 | 6 | 12000 || 34 | 750 | R | 29000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 15 | 350 | 7 | 13000 || 35 | 775 | R | 30000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 16 | 375 | 7 | 14000 || 36 | 800 | R | 31000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 17 | 400 | 8 | 15000 || 37 | NOMAD | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 18 | 425 | 8 | 16000 || 38 | 825 | R | 32000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 19 | 450 | 9 | 17000 || 39 | 850 | R | 33000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ | 20 | 475 | 9 | 18000 || 40 | 1025 | R | 40000 | +-----+------+-----+-------++-----+------+-----+-------+ LEGEND: SEC= SECTOR KLSC= KLINGONS SCORE (BOTH FIGHTER AND BOMBER) KLF= # KLINGON FIGHTERS IN THAT SECTOR. R MEANS RANDOM NUMBER SBSCO= STARBASE SCORE FOR AN UNUSED STARBASE. IF YOU USE IT, YOU ONLY GET 1000 POINTS NOMAD= THESE MARKED MEANS YOU ONLY DEAL WITH NOMAD AND THE MINES IT LAYS. NOMAD APPEARS EVERY 6 SECTORS. After sector 40, the scores don't increase any longer. Other point makers: NOMAD: 30,000 points Anti-Matter UFO: 5000 points Depending on the settings of the machine, you will start with different values for your ship. You don't get free ships, per se. What you do is earn extras to your shields, torpedoes, and warp energy. You can also gain these from the starbases. When your score reaches 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, or 40,000, you will receive 1, 2, 3, or 4 more units of the above. The game ends when your ship is destroyed. Destruction of the Enterprise happens in this sequence: - Lose all shields one at a time until they run out - Lose all photon torpedoes - Lose warp drive - This hit will destroy the enterprise You can insert additional quarters to continue your game but your score will go back to zero and you will start with the machine defaults of shields, photon torpedoes, and warp energy. **************** ******************************** U N I T III ********************************* **************** +======================+ | 7. PLAYING THE GAME |======================================================= +======================+ When you start the game, the Enterprise will be placed into the sector. You will have a 1-2 second delay so take a good look at where everything is at on your radar screen. Your first priority should always be to defend your star- base. - Try to use your warp as little as possible. On the early waves, you can make it to your starbase and defend it without having to warp to it. On the later waves, however, you will be needing that warp to get to your starbase quickly. Also, you will also be using your warp to get away from the Klingons, especially when they go into suicide mode (turn white). - As the game progresses, the Klingons get quicker and they maneuver faster to keep out of phaser range. When you do have a target within your phaser sight, a spinning yellow ring will outline the target. In addition to faster movement, the Klingons also fire faster so you can lose a ship very quickly in the later sectors. - It takes 5 shots to destroy a starbase. After the Klingon bomber has achieved that objective, it will change from red to purple and become a normal Klingon fighter that will attack you. Also, you can collide with the Klingon bomber causing the loss of 1 unit of shield energy. - After sector 20, there are random numbers of Klingon fighters in the sector. If the number is below 4, they may instantly turn white and attempt to ram your ship instead of firing on it. Before sector 20, if you take too long destroying the Klingons, they will also turn white. - You want to, as much as possible, avoid resupplying at the starbase. If you don't resupply, you will get a much larger score then if you do resupply. Plus, if you get enough points, you will get additional things anyway. So, bottom line, use the starbase only in the most dire of circumstances. - You will notice a blue, oval shaped ship on your radar. That is an anti- matter UFO and the only thing you can destroy it with are phasers. If you notice, when you attempt to close in on it, the UFO moves away. The best way, if you can safely do it, is to move diagonally until the UFO is within your phaser range. Sometimes you get a lucky break and the sector starts with the UFO already in phaser range. - The NOMAD sectors are probably the most difficult sectors to deal with. NOMAD rapidly moves around the sector laying mines. These mines either detonate after a certain time period or when you hit them with phaser or photon torpedo fire. Keep in mind, if there are a lot of mines packed together, they will all detonate and your ship may be in the middle of it all. The best strategy is to hopefully put up a phaser barrage at the beginning of the sector and take NOMAD out quickly. If this fails, don't move around unless your ship is in danger. NOMAD will eventually return within range. In the later sectors, NOMAD moves very quickly so you have to be very quick on the controls. - Use your photon torpedoes sparingly since you have a limited number. If you see an enemy grouping of three or more, shoot a torpedo into the middle. Since photon torpedoes have a blast radius, you can probably take out those three ships with one shot. Again, use only on tight groupings of enemies or when desperate measures require desperate actions. - Become very familiar with the controls since a moments hesitation could end the Enterprise's 5 year mission prematurely. **************** ******************************** U N I T IV ********************************* **************** +================+ | 8. CONCLUSION |============================================================= +================+ I remember when this game came out. Since the days of Defender, I hadn't seen a game that had so many buttons and required one to be skilled in using them. With a little practice, though, one could get pretty good at this game. This also was in addition to all the quarters one used to continue the game to see what dangers were in the later sectors. This game actually became pretty addicting plus it was always funny hearing Scotty's and Spock's synthesized voices welcoming you on board. The speed and action of the game increased which only heightened the overall tension of the game. Nothing like spinning the knob and shooting hoping you would destroy something. Unfortunately, it is very rare to find this machine anywhere. However, through the miracle of emulation, a whole new generation is realizing what we "old" folks enjoyed those many years ago. In addition, www.shockwave.com is bringing many of these classic games back. Check out their site to see what ones are there. I hope this guide helps you in being able to get the most amount of gameplay for this game. If you do have other ideas or thoughts, please e-mail me and share them. Who knows, maybe I'll start a Q&A Chapter in this guide if enough people ask the same questions. Anyway, thank you again for reading this guide.
