NEWS & UPDATES =============================================================================== Version 0.93 - 26th February 2005 - Correct wrong use of words. Not much of update this time. I correct the most of the word "branch" with "diverge", which make more sense. I'll be focusing on the FAQ for OutRun2SP soon once I'm done with this FAQ. What are left for me to do are the Character section and the walkthrough for Goal D Imperial Avenue. - Update Character - Alberto. This section wasn't that important actually. Sega doesn't have the habit to include stories in their Arcade games. Look at Virtual Fighters for example. Anyway, this section was written of what I feel about the characters and little information I could get from OR2's official site. Version 0.9 - February 13th 2005 - Update driving techniques - More info added to Stage 3B Coniferous Forest - Update Goal B Metropolis - Minor update on SECRETS & TRICKS section's viewing rank list Version 0.86 - January 16th 2005 - Minor changes on Stage 2A Deep Lake - Update Stage 4C Snow Mountain Version 0.85 - December 31st 2004 - Update Stage 3A Castle Wall - Update Stage 4B Industrial Complex - Update Goal C Ancient Ruins - Correction on SR3's requirements and conditions - Minor update on Cut the lines request - Update SECRETS & TRICKS section - A happy new year to all outrunners! First of all, I would like to apologize for the lack of update. Workload and some personal problems keep snowballing on me. But I promise I'll finish this FAQ. Version 0.82 - August 8th 2004 - Fix up some typos. - Update Stage 3C Desert - Minor changes on Goal E Cape Way - Add some stuff to the OTHERS section Version 0.8 - August 1st 2004 - Almost everything is included in the FAQ. I can safely say that this FAQ is about 80% complete. =============================================================================== 03. INTRODUCTION =============================================================================== First of all, I have to thanks my friend, watermelon87 to introduce this game to me. I use to play Initial D a lot and it's a very expensive game for a hobby. But when I get my hands on OutRun2, I was hook. This game is pretty easy to get into and it's really enjoyable to play this game. This FAQ is to written to help gamers who are new to OR2, to help them know more about the gameplay and providing tips and information. Skilled gamers might find this FAQ useful as it contains useful info on Heart Attack mode. =============================================================================== 04. GETTING STARTED =============================================================================== ------------------ - Basic Controls - ------------------ Menus: Steering wheel = moving the cursor START = select View Change = toggle between 2 sets of cars (in car selection screen) Gas pedal = select (same as start button) Brake pedal = nothing Shift knob = nothing In game: Steering wheel = Steering your car (doh) START = nothing View Change = toggle view Gas pedal = Accelerate Brake pedal = Brake Shift knob = shift up or down gears for manual transmission -------------------- - Playing the game - -------------------- After inserting your credit(s), the game will bring you to the Entry screen where a count down will be given for other players to join. If other players join the entry, the game will be in VS mode when the timer runs out or when the entry is full. Different arcade's machines has different settings, if the entry count down doesn't starts, there will be a "PRESS START" message at the bottom of the Title screen. The game doesn't count down so you could start the entry at your leisure. (note: tapping the start button will makes the timer count down faster) If you decide to go for single player mode instead, hold down the brake pedal and press the view change button during the entry screen. You have to do this before anyone join the entry. Below is a flow chart to show how the game begins. OutRun Mode / Single Player Mode -Heart Attack Mode / \ Title Screen -->Entry screen Time Attack Mode (Starting) \ Versus Mode ---------------------- - Single Player Mode - ---------------------- After you enter the Single player mode, you will be given 3 modes to choose from. There's OutRun mode, Heart Attack mode and the Time Attack mode. OutRun Mode: This is the usual arcade mode. It's a standard single player where you race from the starting course to one of the five goals against the clock. Heart Attack Mode: Impress your lady to gain hearts! A great objective-based mode. Your female companion will request various stunts and objectives for you to perform, and rate your performance accordingly. Time Attack Mode: Think you're great at a course? Try this mode! If your time is great, your record will be saved as a ghost car for others to race against! Likewise, you'll be racing against the ghost cars of others. Beat them, and you'll replace them as the ghost car! Up to 2 ghost cars are saved per course. Traffic is also completely removed in this mode, leaving only the course as the obstacle. Do not forget the time limit though, which will be shortened compared to the other modes! You will have to choose the goal and route before the race. Check Route Planning to find out more about the routes. After the game is over, the password for Internet ranking will be issued. You could submit your records to the site below, http://outrun2.sega-am2.com/ranking_us.html http://outrun2.sega-am2.com/ranking.html --------------- - Versus Mode - --------------- Race head to head with a friend, or up to 4 players in this furious versus mode! In this mode, the players behind the leader will get speed boost so that they could catch up with the leader. --------------------- - Selection Screens - --------------------- After selecting a mode, it's time to choose your car. There are a total of 8 Ferraris to choose from. (See Cars section for more details) In the car selection screen, only 4 default cars can be seen. You could press the view change button to switch alternative cars. Although the basic performance stats of the default car and the alternative car are the same, there are minor differences between the 2 cars. For example: The Enzo Ferrari's transmission has 6 gears, while the F40 has 5 gears. The F40 replaces the Enzo when you press view change. While choosing the cars in Single player mode, you can also change the color of your car. Read secrets and tricks section for more detail. After selecting you car, the next screen will be selecting Auto or Manual Transmission. And finally the last screen will be selecting the music/BGM. Available BGMs are as follows: 1. Splash Wave 2. Magical Sound Shower 3. Passing Breeze 4. Risky Ride 5. Shiny World 6. Night Flight 7. Life Was A Bore =============================================================================== 05. CHARACTERS =============================================================================== Name: Alberto Height: 180cm Weight: 75kg Age: 25 Bio: Alberto is the protagonist in OutRun2. He doesn't talk in the game at all. Although he looks easy going, he is actually a wiz in driving. He has a very distinguished driving sense and always knows how to satisfy a lady's urge for speed. Alberto doesn't seem to do well other than racing. If you watch the endings in OutRun mode, you will understand what I mean. Name: Jennifer Height: 170cm Weight: 52kg Age: 23 Bio: Coming soon! DRIVING TECHNIQUES =============================================================================== -------- - Grip - -------- Some bends are pretty easy to counter; they may look like you need to drift, but all you need is a little drop in speed. During the bend, while holding your wheel, slightly lift up the gas pedal and step on it again. This require a bit of control as different cars works differently. When you drop a little speed, you car can move towards the inner lane. Steering all the way with full throttle can easily run through on some turns This will require choosing a good lane and correct time to turn the steering. When approaching a bend, it is wise to stay at least one lane away from the inner lane. Slightly turn the steering wheel early, and turn according to the angle of the bend. A few good places to learn gripping is the long bend in Palm Beach, Deep Lake and Alpine. -------------------- - Hugging the apex - -------------------- This technique is more like gripping but with more wheel control. It involves driving partially over the side road without losing speed. Most of the side roads like grass, snow and sand will slow down the speed if you drive all the way onto them. However, placing less than 50% of the car space on the side road will not suffer any speed loss at all. This way, you can navigate through a bend with the possible minimum distance and possible maximum speed. It's best to hug the apex whenever possible. This could save you one or two seconds per bend. Hugging the apex on all possible bents can reduce a lot of seconds off your records. --------------- - Basic Drift - --------------- It is a very important skill in OutRun2. There are many turns and bends that require drifting. To start a drift, turn the steering wheel and let go of the gas pedal, follow by a tap on the brake, and quickly step on the gas pedal again. If you stay too long in a drift, your speed will go down slowly. So avoid drifting when it's not necessary. To recover from a drift, you could let go of the gas pedal, adjust your car with the steering wheel and step on the gas pedal again. ---------------- - Slight Drift - ---------------- If you only turn the wheel at a slight angle rather than all the way at the start of the drift, the momentum will not be as strong. This is useful when you need to change direction more quickly, especially in the chicane at the Desert. ---------------------------- - Release Direction Change - ---------------------------- A quicker way to change directions during a drift to conquer chicanes and the like is to let go of the gas pedal, counter steer, and step on the gas pedal when the car changes direction. --------------------------- - Compromising with Brake - --------------------------- Sometimes, especially on AT, when a drift just doesn't seem enough and your car ends up in the side even with the wheel locked in the wanted direction; you should hold the brake longer before the actual drift or change in drift direction. Holding the brake during the drift helps, but not as much as holding before. This is especially useful for chicanes and multiple drifts, where the momentum of the following drifts just don't seem enough to do the trick. ------------------ - Drift Strafing - ------------------ During a drift, the steering wheel can be used to strafe (shift) the car left or right, thus allowing you to avoid cars and the like. Turning the wheel more towards your desired drift direction will help build momentum to conquer the turn, while turning the wheel away (counter steering) from your desired direction helps control the momentum of the drift, so that you do not over-drift and end up drifting too much and probably grind against the rails or end up in the grass/dirt. --------------------- - 5-4-5/6-5-6 drift - --------------------- It more or less means shifting the gear from 5 to 4 and back quickly on MT. Same with 6-shift cars. With at least 240km/h on the meter, performing this technique makes a drift with very strong momentum. One that is enough to conquer any turn. If your speed is lower than 240km/h, you have to shift lower a gear, aka 4-3-4. Otherwise, no drift will happen. ---------------------------- - 5-4-5/6-5-6 drift change - ---------------------------- Changing directions with the same 5-4-5 techniques is very useful in building momentum for changing drift direction while not losing much speed by jamming the brakes. However, timing is very crucial. When you counter steer to change the direction of the drift, and your car is facing somewhat straight, between the direction change, that's the time to pull the 5-4-5. When done right, tremendous momentum will be added to the drift, allowing you to conquer any Chicane. =============================================================================== 08. COURSE =============================================================================== There are a total of 15 different courses in OutRun2 and they are broken into 5 stages. You will start off from stage 1, Palm Beach and make your way to 1 of the 5 goals. Every course except the goals has a diverge at the end, which will lead you to 2 different course for the next stage. When you approaching a diverge, you will have to decide your next course by taking the left lane or the right lane. In VS mode, the leading player in the race will decide the next course for the other player(s) to follow. Base on the simple ASCII course map I made, if you want to take the lane towards the upper course, you will have to take the left lane in the game. If you want to take the lane towards the lower course, you will have to take the right lane. Take Palm Beach for example, when you approach the diverge at the end, take the left lane and your next stage will be Deep Lake. Take the right lane and your next stage will be Alpine. Take note that the lower courses are harder than the ones at the upper courses. (EASY) Tulip Garden / (A) Cloudy Highland / \ Castle Wall Metropolis / \ / (B) Deep Lake Industrial Complex / \ / \ Palm Beach Coniferous Forest Ancient Ruins (Start) \ / \ / (C) Alpine Snow Mountain \ / \ Desert Imperial Avenue \ / (D) Ghost Forest \ Cape Way (E) (HARD) ------------------ - Route Planning - ------------------ Below is a table to show you the entire possible route to reach each goal. There's a total of 16 routes to choose from. Both Goal A and E have only 1 route so if you take a wrong lane at the diverge, there's no way you can change it. Both Goal B and D have 4 routes and Goal C has 6 routes, the highest number of possible routes in the game. ---------------------------------- Legends: - Goal - Route - Lanes - L = Left lane ---------------------------------- R = Right lane - A 01 LLLL - ---------------------------------- - B 02 LLLR - - 03 LLRL - - 04 LRLL - - 05 RLLL - ---------------------------------- - C 06 LLRR - - 07 LRLR - - 08 LRRL - - 09 RLLR - - 10 RLRL - - 11 RRLL - ---------------------------------- - D 12 LRRR - - 13 RLRR - - 14 RRLR - - 15 RRRL - ---------------------------------- - E 16 RRRR - ---------------------------------- ---------------------- - Stage 1 Palm Beach - ---------------------- This is where the starting line is. When the race begins, you could take the right most lanes by cutting over the sands. The sand will slow down the speed but it doesn't matter during the early stage of the game. By taking the right most lane early in the game and you could travel the road with minimum distance and even shorter time. The first few bends on the beach are pretty long and easy. This is a good place to learn the grip method. So don't drift unnecessary. In fact, this course doesn't need to drift at all. There is a chicane near the end. If you are not confidence enough, it's wise to slow down. This chicane can be counter by cutting the corners. Stay on the left lane before the chicane. Aim for the right lane when entering and finally return back to the left lane on the last bend. At the diverge, you can go to Deep Lake by taking the left lane or Alpine by taking the right lane. When driving through the branch road, take this chance to learn some simple gripping technique and moving around the traffic flow. There won't be any sharp bends, so there's not need to drift at all. This applies to other branch roads as well. ---------------------- - Stage 2A Deep Lake - ---------------------- There are 3 bridges in this course. The road in the first half is pretty straight forward. After the 1st bridge is a long right bent. It's pretty easy so there's no need to drift. There is a chicane after the second bridge. You can't cut corners on this chicane so just drift and counter steer. You will be drifting into the 3rd bridge. Recover early and watch out for the walls. After the last bridge is a sharp and long left bent. Just drift normally or stay on the right lane and grip towards the left lane, then drift for the remaining half of the bend. At the diverge, you can go to Castle Wall by taking the left lane or Coniferous Forest by taking the right lane. ------------------- - Stage 2B Alpine - ------------------- The first 2 bends are very long and easy. There's no need to drift at all, so take this chance to learn on gripping. The chicane in this course is easier than the Palm Beach's. Just cut corners by staying at the left lane and aim for the right lane. Next you will be entering a sheltered area, the tight bend here can be run through with using either grip or drift. There are 2 sharp bends near the end. Both sharp bends are pretty far away so you have plenty of time to adjust your car. At the diverge, you can go to Coniferous Forest by taking the left lane or Desert by taking the right lane. ------------------------ - Stage 3A Castle Wall - ------------------------ The first 2 bends are pretty easy. After that is a 90-degree left bend, enter by staying on the right lane, grip into the left lane and make a drift on the remaining half of this bend. Soon afterward is a chicane, drift early before the chicane and counter early. Otherwise you will be driving onto the grass. Recover as soon as possible because the next bend is just right ahead. Just do a normal drift on this sharp right bend. Now we come to the last bend of this stage. It may look like a sharp bend, but it's actually a long 90-degree left bend. A normal drift should do the job. At the diverge, you can go to Cloudy Highland by taking the left lane or Industrial Complex by taking the right lane. ------------------------------ - Stage 3B Coniferous Forest - ------------------------------ This course has some decent challenges. There's some series of sharp bends and a tricky chicane here. But not to worry; the road is pretty wide because it has 5 lanes, so you have plenty of rooms to maneuver. The chicane is near the end of the course, it has 3 bends instead of the usual 2; so don't be fooled by the straight road between the 2nd and the 3rd bend. Because there's no road sign for the 3rd bend, it's considered as part of the chicane. The first bend is an easy left bend; the second bend will be a long and easy right bend, which will turns into a sharp right bend. So just grip on that bend and drift later on. (You can even continue to grip after passing the direction sign and drift at the last minute, but it's pretty risky.) After the last sharp bend, is another left sharp bend, so instead of recovering, do a counter drift. Next up is a sharp left-right bend combo. Before approaching, stay at the right lane and grip towards the left and do a normal drift. You don't want to end up scrapping the right wall so drift early and counter drift early too. Your final test is a long and sharp right bend-3 bend chicane combo. Just like the second bend at the beginning, stay gripping until you pass the direction sign and drift before you see the direction sign of the chicane. You won't have enough time to recover from the last bend, so just counter drift instead. And counter drift for each remaining bends as well. It's near impossible for first timer to conquer this chicane. And timing & lining are important elements. So if you didn't succeed, just keep trying until you got it right. At the diverge, you can go to Industrial Complex by taking the left lane or Snow Mountain by taking the right lane. ------------------- - Stage 3C Desert - ------------------- After a few easy bends is a long and sharp right bend. Similar to the last bend at Deep Lake, you can use grip to enter the 1st half of the bend and drift on the later half. After this bend is a tight left bend, use the grip by staying on the right lane and cut into the left lane. Next is a sharp left bend, this bend is smaller so drift early. Otherwise you will drive into the sand. The chicane can be pretty tough and most players often end up crashing. For beginners, it's safer to drive into the sands to slow down. For skilled players, drift early and counter steering before the bend change, if you do correctly, your car will move towards the right lane and recover near the left lane. After the chicane is a 90-degree right bend follow by a sharp left bend. Just drift and counter drift on the sharp bend. At the diverge, you can go to Snow Mountain by taking the left lane or Ghost Forest by taking the right lane. ---------------------------- - Stage 4A Cloudy Highland - ---------------------------- This course is pretty easy; you will be going through a series of easy bends in the beginning. Drive in a straight line by cutting corners and don't turn too much on the steering wheel. Next is a long and tight bend, you might have to stay drifting in a longer time. Near the end of the course is a huge S-bend. Just drift early and counter steering early too. Lastly is a long and easy right bend At the diverge, you can reach the finish line at Goal A, Tulip Garden by taking the left lane or Goal B, Metropolis by taking the right lane. ------------------------------- - Stage 4B Industrial Complex - ------------------------------- This stage is pretty straightforward. The side road in this course is actually concrete road painted with white markings; it doesn't affect your speed at all when you drive on it. This stage has 5 lanes (including the side road) so you have plenty of rooms to maneuver around. There is no chicane on this stage at all. As usual, the first bend is very easy; so don't drift on this one. Next, drift normally on the 90-degree left bend. Another easy bends follow by a long straight road and a 90-degree right bend. This bend is a bit harder, because many players often scrapping the wall while recovering. The key is to find a good lane and drift early. It's better to stay near to the left lane and drift. Another 90-degree right bend after the long straight road, this bend is easier. Just drift early and prepare to counter drift, because there's a left sharp bend not far away. Next up is the final 90-degree right bend follow by a easy right bend. As usual, just drift early. At the diverge, you can reach the finish line at Goal B, Metropolis by taking the left lane or Goal C, Ancient Ruins by taking the right lane. -------------------------- - Stage 4C Snow Mountain - -------------------------- This course is pretty slow compare to other course. That's why time attackers avoid this place at all cost. But this course is still a good place for VS mode. If you want some amusement, come to this course from Stage 3C Desert, the snow mountains will pop up like a jelly during the branch road. The first bend is pretty easy; you could even place a large part of car into the snows without slowing down. Next up is a long and sharp right bend into a tunnel. Stay on the left lane and grip towards the right. Once you get out of the tunnel, there will be a sharp left bend. Stay on the left lane and grip towards the right, then drift when the gripping is not enough to navigate through that bend. After the long straight road is a right sharp bend. Drift early and recover early too, because there's a chicane-left sharp bend combo coming right up. You need the speed to drift all the way through this combo. Drift early before the chicane and counter drift. If possible, don't recover too much after the counter drift, leave you car drifting for the left sharp bend too. If you recover after the chicane, just drift as normal on that bend then. At the diverge, you can reach the finish line at Goal C, Ancient Ruins by taking the left lane or Goal D, Imperial Avenue by taking the right lane. ------------------------- - Stage 4D Ghost Forest - ------------------------- This is a nightmare version of Coniferous Forest. It has very narrow roads and a series of tricky turns near the end. Use the grip instead of drift at the 2nd tight bend. Just turn the steering wheel all the way, this turn be done with full throttle on the gas pedal. Otherwise, drop some speed if necessary. The reason to use the grip instead of drift is because you will need the speed to drift for the sharp bend soon afterward. Now comes some serious challenge, next up is easy right bend follow by a combo of another sharp bend and a chicane. Starts by drifting at the sharp bend and watch out for the chicane, counter steering and do another drift quickly. In this course, you can reach the finish line at Goal D, Imperial Avenue by taking the left lane or Goal E, Cape Way by taking the right lane. ----------------------- - Goal A Tulip Garden - ----------------------- The hardest part in this course is the easy chicane-sharp bend combo. The chicane has 3 bends, the first 2 bends can be easily cut through in a straight line. Start drifting at the 2nd bend and stay drifting through the sharp bend as well. If you are good enough, make an early light drift and quickly recover after the 2nd bend, the 3rd bend of the chicane will become an easy left bent and the next thing you should worry is the sharp bend. Near the end of the course is another chicane, drift early and counter steering early too. Watch out for the walls on the right, you might have to drop some speed when you counter steer. After the chicane, the finishing line is just right ahead. --------------------- - Goal B Metropolis - --------------------- Welcome to Paris! Just like Industrial Complex, the side roads in this course are concrete road painted with white markings. So it doesn't slow you down. This course doesn't have any chicane too. As usual, the first bend is pretty easy. The second bend is a short and sharp left bend but you can grip on it by staying on the right lane and grip into the left. The third bend is a long and sharp right bend. You can also grip on this bend too, just stay on the left lane and grip towards the right lane. The fourth bend is another long and sharp right bend, you can do the same by gripping but you'll have to drift when the bend gets tight. At the middle of the course, there is a huge bend that is about 270 degree. Fortunately, this bend has 7 lanes! It's more than enough to maneuver around. At the end of this bend is a right turn, so be prepare to counter steer to the right. Most player often scraping the right wall when counter steer, the best way to prevent this is to get a good line while you drift and good timing for recovering. When you enter the tunnel, it may seem narrow because there are only 3 lanes. But if you include the side road, it makes a total of 5 lanes. Don't be fool by the marking on the road and the surroundings of the walls; you still have plenty of rooms to move around. There will be 3 bends in the tunnel, just drift normally for the first and second bend. Be sure to recover early because these two bends are pretty close to each other. You can stay drifting through out these 2 bends as well. Lastly, grip through the easy left bend and the goal is just right ahead. ------------------------ - Goal C Ancient Ruins - ------------------------ Your first obstacle will be the 2 easy bends and a sharp left bend combo. The first 2 bends are pretty easy, but they are very close to each other. It's almost like a very small chicane. Just cut through these bends as straight as possible. Enter the sharp left bend by gripping through the first half and then drift later on. Be preparing to counter drift for the next sharp bend. Note: If you drift too early in the first sharp bend, you will have to stay drifting and thus losing speed, you will lose even more speed when you counter drift. Next up is another right sharp bend and left sharp bend combo. Drift early so you can prepare for another counter drift, this combo is like a huge chicane. Recover as soon as the road straighten and quickly stick to the right lane and cut into the left lane. Just a few seconds away is the sharp right-left bend combo. Drift quickly as you get out of the easy bends and counter drift. After all this mayhem, you can finally catch some breath at the finishing line. -------------------------- - Goal D Imperial Avenue - -------------------------- COMING SOON! ------------------- - Goal E Cape Way - ------------------- After the first 2 easy bend is a right sharp bend. So don't drift during the easy bends, save the speed to drift on the sharp bend. Soon afterward is a small and easy chicane, just stay on the right lane and drive through by cutting corners. Next is a long and easy left bend follow by a tight left bend and another sharp right bend. Drift early before the tight bend, so that you could recover early and drift in the sharp bend. The last part of this course is another chicane, follow by a small right bend. It is similar to the right bend-chicane combo at Dead forest but it's tighter and smaller, so be extra careful. After the chicane, just drift to the right and the finishing line is just ahead. =============================================================================== 09. Heart Attack Mode =============================================================================== Clarissa will be your companion in this mode. You need to score as many hearts as possible. There will different sections on the road. Every section have a "Start" sign at the beginning and a "End" signs at the end of each section. Before you approach these sections, Clarissa will pop up a balloon of a light bulb, follow by a huge speech balloon and inside the balloon is the request you need to accomplish. Once you enter the section, you must do what she requests in order to score her hearts. ------------------ - Speech Balloon - ------------------ When you carry out a request, the hearts you score will be accumulate around the speech balloon. After you pass through the sections, the hearts around the speech balloon will add into your total heart score. The faster you finish the request, the more hearts you will get. Bumping or crashing will take away the hearts in the speech balloon and your total heart scores. The amounts of heart losses will depend on how bad the crashing is. If there is no hearts in the speech balloon, it will turn it's color from white to light blue when you crash. When that happens, you are suffering from a penalty. The worst the crash, the more penalty you get. And the darker the blue color is. When your suffer the penalty, you won't be able to accumulate hearts to the speech balloon. One way to recover from the penalty is to continue to carry out the request. It will lighten up the penalty until the speech balloon becomes white. Then you can accumulate hearts once again. Another way is to give up the current request and head for the next one; because the penalty doesn't carry over. Do this only when you are near the end of the section. If you still have a long way to go, it doesn't hurt just to earn some hearts. The problem with the speech balloon is that during some request, it will move from one side of the screen to another. This could cause some problems as it covers part of the screen and blocking part of your view for a brief moment when it move. ------------- - Side Road - ------------- During a request, do not drive onto the side road, for example, the grass, sand and ice; because it will take away your hearts from the speech balloon. If there is no more hearts, the speech balloon will suffers penalty and turn blue. However, when not carrying any request, it's safe to drive onto the side road. ----------- - Ranking - ----------- The better you performs, the more hearts you'll score and the higher the rank you'd get. The highest to lowest ranks are in the order of AAA, AA, A, B, C, D and E. After you finish a section, Clarissa will evaluate your performance by giving you a rank. ------------------- - Special Request - ------------------- If you did well on 2nd stage and meet a certain conditions, Clarissa will give you "Special request" (SR) for the next stage. If you did well during the special request on stage 3, you'd get another SR for the next stage called "Special Request 2!" (SR2). It works like a combo; do well for SR2 and you will get "Special Request 3!" (SR3) in the final stage. Below is a list of requirements to get the special requests, ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Stage - Special Request - Requirements and conditions ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 SR Get rank B or above for each request on stage 2. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 SR Get rank B or A for each request on stage 3. ------------------------------------------------------------- SR2 Get rank AA or above for each request on stage 3. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5 SR Get rank A for each request on stage 4. ------------------------------------------------------------- SR2 Get Total ranking of AA or above on stage 4. ------------------------------------------------------------- SR3 Get ranking of AA or above on all requests from stage 1 to 4. And never crash on stage 1 to 4. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Legends: SR = Special Request SR2 = Special Request 2 SR3 = Special Request 3 =============================================================================== 10. Heart Attack Request (part 1) =============================================================================== There are total of 7 different requests in Heart Attack mode. Below are some tips for each request, ---------------- - Don't crash! - ---------------- This is the easiest request. Drive as safely as possible. Do not stay close to the cars around you. Don't make any contact with the CPU cars and the walls. Even a small tap against the wall will cost you hearts, so don't ever make contact with anything, except the road of course. This request is often placed at areas where you need to drift. So be extra careful and treat this request as a harder form of Drift more and Keep passing cars. ---------------------- - Keep passing cars! - ---------------------- This is one of the common requests. Every car you overtake earns you a couple of hearts. Getting AAA rank in this section is easy as long as you don't crash and lose too much speed. A good awareness of the traffic flow is also required. This is the only request that could earn you some bonus. When you pass a certain number of cars, the bonus hearts will go directly into your total heart score instead of the speech balloon. --------------- - Drift more! - --------------- Another common request. Start drifting before you pass through the "Start" sign, so that you could earn the hearts as soon as possible. It doesn't matter what angle your car is when drifting. For some sections, you have to stay drifting even if the road is straight. In this case, make sure your speed is fast enough to start a drift. Otherwise, you might not be able to stay drifting as long as you can. ------------------------- - Run through red/blue! - ------------------------- Before starting, the CPU cars will disappear. In this request, you need to drive through the colored zone to score hearts. The red colored zone will be placed on the left side of the road while the blue colored zone is placed on the right. It's ok if your front wheels are outside the zone, because all you need is to place the rear wheels inside the zone. If 1 of the rear wheels is outside, no hearts will be given. ----------------------- - Hit the blue cones! - ----------------------- Same as Run through red/blue! request, the CPU cars will disappear before starting the request. The aim is to hit as many blue cones as you can. There will be a total of 20 blue cones lined up on the road. The first blue cone will be placed between 2 yellow cones. You will get a penalty if you hit the yellow cones instead. For some request, drifting is recommended because your car can cover more space with the side. ------------------ - Cut the lines! - ------------------ This request is exclusive in Special Request 2 at Snow Mountain. During the request, the CPU cars will be connected to each other with a line. And there will be a heart on the line. You need to touch as many lines as possible in order to score. If you pass the cars instead, the line and the heart will disappear. The problem with this request is that, the CPU cars will sometime merge together and make it impossible to cut the lines between them. This is an unforeseen problem that slip pass under Sega's nose. Also, when the connected cars are too far apart, the line will disappear as if it's a rubber band getting snapped. --------------------- - Catch the Hearts! - --------------------- This request only appears during SR (Special Request), SR2 and SR3 at both Ancient Ruins and Imperial Avenue. During the request, there will be hearts floating around each CPU cars. You need to catch up with the cars and touch the hearts to score. Each car will carry 2 hearts, 1 heart on the left and another on the right. After grabbing a heart from either side, you could still try to grab the other heart on the very same car. =============================================================================== 11. SECRETS & TRICKS =============================================================================== -------------------- - No Handicap Mode - -------------------- To turn off the handicap boost for runner-up cars in VS Mode, all players must step and hold on the Break pedal and Shift up at the same time, during car selection or song selection screens. If done correctly, a "No Handicap" box will appears at the right side of the screen. The best way to make this work is to shift up and down constantly until the box appear. Note: Shift up is gear up and it means to move the shift knob down. This trick also can be entered after real players mode is activate or vice versa. -------------------- - Real Player Mode - -------------------- To remove the CPU cars in VS mode, all players must press and hold on the view change button and Shift down at the same time, during Car Selection or Song Selection screens. If done correctly, a "Real Players Only" box will appears at the right side of the screen. The best way to make this work is to shift up and down constantly until the box appear. -------------- - Force quit - -------------- During the race, stop the car completely and hold down the brake, view change and shift up. The game will bring up a "yes and no" question. Choose yes and the game will end. You can only do this once in each game. If you choose no and resume game instead, you cannot force quit anymore until the game is over. Note: The force quit won't work if you have less than 8 seconds on the remaining time. This trick was tested on a single player mode. ------------------ - Changing color -
------------------
This trick only works in single player mode. At the car selecting screen, hold
down the brake pedal and move the shift knob up or down to switch through the
colors. You will see a code at the right side of the screen. Each code

- Moonwalker -
--------------
If you got extra credits to spare, try this trick. Start a game and select
everything as usual. When you car moves to the starting line, leave the
controls alone and don't touch anything. When the flag waver gives the signal
to start the race, watch out for the flag waver. After a while, he will start
doing some warm up exercise. Before the time runs out he will moonwalk just
like Michael Jackson.

Note: This trick was tested on a single player mode.

13. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
===============================================================================

Q: Can I reach the finishing line at Cape Way if I take the route to Deep Lake?
A: No. If you take the route to Deep Lake, you could only reach the finishing
line at goal A,B,C and D. Look at the course map for more info.

Q: Can I turn around and backtrack?
A: Unfortunately, you can't. This game is programmed to make you drive from one
point to another without letting you backtrack.

Q: Which route should I take to score well in Heart Attack?
A: Route 1, Goal A is the best way to score hearts. The request often gives
more hearts than other routes. It is possible to score over 2000 hearts.

Q: Why do I get so little hearts even thought I score an AAA rank?
A: The number of hearts you score is determine by how fast you finish the
request. Take drift more for example, if you drift in the inner lane, it
takes a shorter distance compare to the outer lane. And therefore you spend
lesser time on the request. Aim to finish the request as fast as possible
and you will be rewarded with great score.

Q: Do I get speed boost in Time Attack mode?
A: No. That would be unfair for the ghost car, isn't it?

Q: Why don't you write a FAQ for the Xbox version?
A: Sadly, I do not have an Xbox.
