Introduction ) ----------------/ Gauntlet Dark Legacy is the add-on to Gauntlet Legends, a video game remake of the classic 80s game Gauntlet. In the original game, players would select one out of four characters to roam around dungoens to get a high score by grabbing gold, or beating up monsters. Players could choose a Warrior, a Valkyre, a Wizard, or an Elf, whom many people thought was sexually ambiguous since the name kinda threw them off (um...ok). Gauntlet Legends, like it's predecessor, does the same, but a lot of things have changed since the 80s. The Elf, turned into a cool looking female Archer, and GL adds a couple of neat RPG elements. Like a stereotypical RPG, the players can improve their characters by making them stronger as they get level ups from monsters. Players can also choose alternate versions of characters. The Warrior becomes the Minotaur, Valkyre becomes the Falconess, the Wizard becomes the Jackal, and the Archer becomes the Tigress. There is also a story in the game. An evil demon named Skorne has returned after being sealed by twelve rune stones. He is causing trouble throughout the land. You must stop him. The coolest feature about GL is that it offers the ability to save your progress. Just put in three letters, and then put in a three digit number password, and you can continue where you left off (although you start from square one when it comes to stages). As mentioned before, Dark Legacy is the add-on to Gl, and it adds new challenging levels along with 8 new characters. They are the Knight, Dwarf, Sorceress, and the Jester. The others are their egoes: The Unicorn (Knight's), Ogre (Dwarf's [Note: You MUST see him]), Medusa (Sorceress'), and the Hyena (Jester's). This FAQ discusses the Unicorn. I am sorry for the long intro, but I wrote it for those who have seen the game, but do not know anything about it. I decided to make separate FAQs for ALL sixteen characters. Why am I doing this? Because you have to use every character differently. This is not Tekken Tag where all the heavy guys fight like a dumb robot, or Marvel vs. Capcom where every character that wears a gi fights like a Shoto (Ken and Ryu's fighting style). You need to use EACH character effectively. Besides, not only do I want to share my experiences with beating the game with a secret character since a lot of people were impressed by my character (While they also realized how much time and money I spent on the game). ------------------\ 2. Character Info ) ------------------/ The Unicorn is one of the new secret characters in Gauntlet Dark Legacy. He is the alter ego of the Knight. Unlike the other egoes, he actually looks different just like the Ogre looks VERY different from the Dwarf ('Ever seen the Ogre? OH MY GOD!!). His armor differs from the Knight, and he carries a shield. He is pretty cool looking too. To use the Unicorn, use the Knight, and get him to level 10. After you get your Knight to level 10, go to the character select screen, and instead of picking the Knight immediately, hold the turbo button. You'll see the Unicorn. When I saw this guy for the first time, I promised myself that I will beat the game with him, and become a level 99 Legend with him. When I beat the game with him, I also promised to do a FAQ on this guy. Here is some more information on the Unicorn: A. Stats Best stats: Armor, and Power like the Knight start/max Power: 400/850 Armor: 500/950 Speed: 300/850 Magic: 250/700 The Unicorn's stats differ from the Knight's by 50 more points. He is better than the Knight by means of combat and magic. While you can make the Knight an average magic user, you can have the Unicorn as an above average magic user. Unlike the other egoes (Ogre, Medusa, and Hyena), this guy is worth trying. He is actually different from the Knight. Just look at him. Let's compare and contrast the Knight and Unicorn's stats to prove it. Knight Unicorn start/max start/max Power 350/750 Power 400/850 Armor 450/850 Armor 500/950 Speed 300/800 Speed 350/850 Magic 250/650 Magic 300/700 Note: I messed up the stats in the last FAQ. I was a little off, and my Unicorn's stats were maxed out b/c I used the other characters to get more cash. After using one character for a while, I went back to the Unicorn, and used all of the cash on the weaker stats. I sincerely apologize for this. B. Ranks Like the other characters in Dark Legacy, the Unicorn gets a rank every tenth level that you get in the game. However The Unicorn's Ranks somewhat vary from the Knight's. Here is a list of his titles along with the rewards that you get: 10 - Faun - Better weapon. 20 - Faun - nothing. 30 - Protector - Dove familiar 40 - Protector - n/a. 50 - Cavalier - Better weapon. 60 - Cavalier - n/a. 70 - Champion - n/a. 80 - Champion - Dove turns into a black dragon. 90 - Champion(?) (I never saw the promotion screen for this one) - gold mace. 99 - Legend - Giant Size Unicorn. C. Familiar The Unicorn gets a familiar when he hits level 30. He gets two different familiars: One is a dove when you are around levels 30 - 79, and the other is a dragon, an upgraded familiar that will be with you throughout the rest of the game. They improve when you get more level ups. D. Turbo Attacks To pull off a turbo attack, hit the "Turbo: and "Attack" button at the same time when the following colors shine: green, yellow, or rose (It's bright pink). There are three different level attacks. You can not move if you are trying to pull it off for he will either throw his mace, or block. Level 1 (Green Bar is shining): Turbo attack The Unicorn will duck down, and try to make himself look like a ball. Suddenly, bright blue spikes will be coming out of his back. This attack is actually one of the better turbo attacks for a level one attack as it can either knock the enemy a few feet away from you, or even destroy the weaker foes around you. However, you have to use it effectively. Do not use it if there are level three monsters around you, nor should you use on Golems and bosses. level 2 Attack (Yellow Bar is shining): Ball and Chain The Unicorn will swing his mace as it transforms into a morning star. He'll swing it, and destroy the foes around him. This is the best second level attack in the game. It protects you from the monsters that are coming towards you, and it covers a lot of ground. It usually does not take down level 3 monsters with one blow, but it knocks them away from you. Level 3 Attack (Turbo bar is shining with a rose color): Wheel of Death The best attack in the whole game. The Unicorn will swing his mace like a madman, and then he will shoot a BIG Wheel with a spike on each side. This is the best turbo attack b/c it has an incredible range as it destroys a LOT of monsters that come near it. It even gets a couple of generators or monsters that are a foot or two away from it. What is even more incredible is that you can get rid of a couple of monsters that are near you when the Unicorn is swinging it. When he throws the wheel, anyone around him will fall in seconds. This is REALLY helpful in stages that carry a lot of monsters. The only attacks that come close to this are Hammertime (Jester's), Acid Rain (Sorceress'), BFG (The Archer's), and Plasma Trail (Warrior). Level 3 Turbo attack with another person (a.k.a Multiplayer only): Dive Bomber The Unicorn will pick the other player's character, and throw him/her like a plane. This attack is VERY useful. To pull this off, just be next to your partner, and push the Turbo and Attack button together. -------------------------------\ 3. How to use him effectively. ) -------------------------------/ While the Unicorn has awesome stats, and a great attack, there is only one problem with him: He is balanced like the Valkyre, Falconess, and the Knight. Although a balanced character has no real weaknesses, the problem is that you need to use him the RIGHT way. You can not resort to physical combat all of the time, but you can not use the magic potions like you would normally use them with the Wizard, Sorceress, Jackal or Medusa. ou should have some magic potions with you, but you have to build the Unicorn's stats in order to make the potions effective. While 250 Magic points are ok for a level 1 Unicorn, 700 points are better. Although his turbo attack is arguably the best attack in the game, do not rely on it too much. You will need a full turbo meter for blocking, and running. If you want to beat a lot of the bosses in the game, learn how to use your turbo meter. There will be times where shooting a Wheel of Death is not always the solution to winning the battle. Learn how to block the attacks. Buying the right stat items can be tough even though the stats will be maxed out by the time your Unicorn reaches 70-90+. Even though they will naturally max out as you gain levels, you should work on the Unicorn's stats so you will have an easier time beating the game. The first stat item you should focus on is the Power stat item. The Unicorn's two most important stats are Power and Armor. The Unicorn's power takes a while to max out, and you need the power. Having more power will help you with the bosses. A Unicorn with 900 Power points will inflict more damage on the Spider Queen than a Unicorn with 500 power stats. Don't worry about the Armor points. It will max itself out by the time you hit level 90+. Besides, the Unicorn takes less damage than everyone else even in the beginning of the game. Do not forget to work on the Speed, and Magic stat points too. When it comes to bosses, there is only one general rule: stay away from them. The Unicorn's projectile attacks are pretty effective against the bosses, and the damage from each mace you throw at a boss will improve as you gain level ups. Using your Wheel of Death on them helps too, but Using the Wheel of Death on them all of the time will not help you either especially when you are fighting the Lich. Use the turbo button for running, and blocking. ----------------\ 4. Stage advice ) ----------------/ I will not go into full detail with the stages b/c the Unicorn can go through most of them without any problems. This section will mostly describe the realms in general, but if there are stages that I feel that they may give people trouble in the game, I will mention them. You can e-mail me if you think I should write about a stage in the next update. I will NOT put rune information in this game. Look at John Lakin's FAQ for that info (Thanks, man. You kick serious arse). Besides most of the rune stones are EASY to find. A. Mountain Kingdom This realm is ridiculously easy. Only stage three might be the toughest stage for some players especially with the orcs, archers, bombers, and Golems. GRAB THE ICE AXE IN STAGE 2. The dragon is tough when you are fighting him with a level 12 Unicorn, or a Unicorn with a level number less than 12, and it can help you get some free hits and exp. points. Stage 3 - Stay away from the archers, bombers, and golems. There may be times Where you may fight 4 (yes, four) golems. If you saved your potions from the last two stages, you should use them in this stage as you can be easily surrounded by the enemy in seconds. Try to clear the area before you get the limited invulnerability, and use it only if you're going to fight Golems Use a potion when you are near two treasure chests after you passed the first hill It turn death into an apple. 1) Dragon - This guy is tough when your Unicorn is around level 12-50, but when he is EASY for a level 75+. Even though he is a whimp on level 75+, you should HAVE THE ICE AXE. It takes 1/4 of his health, and it helps you score some free hits on him. He has four different attacks: a) The seismic wave which can be dodged if you run to the lower right part of the screen. b) He shoots a normal fireball. You can easily dodge it. c) He shoots two fireballs that have a little pattern: they come at you like one follows the other, or they go into two different directions which you can easily evade. They are easy to avoid. d) A close attack if you're dumb enough to attack him in close battle. 2) Ice Axe - In stage 2, look for a switch, and go to the stone that looks like an orc's head. If you hit the switch, the head will open up to reveal the ice axe. B. Sky Realm Another easy, but somewhat challenging stage. A lot of people rush through the stage, but when the enemy surrounds them, they pop tokens in the game like crazy. Just play it safe. Do not worry about the Plague Fiend as it is an easy boss to beat. TAKE YOUR TIME, and try to skip the first exit for cash, and experience. Stage 1 - If you want to build your Unicorn's level, go to the first stage, and grab the anti-death powers that can be found in the beginning and the middle of the stage. You can use them on death that waits for you in two different locations to get two free level ups. After you get the level ups, die, start a new game, and repeat the trick. 1) Plague Fiend - Pretty easy to beat, but he's tough if you are not taking him seriously, or are with people you can't get along with. He has three attacks: a) He'll spit acid at you b) He'll swing his Hentai-ish tentacle at you. You can evade it by going to the lower left side of the screen unless he is focusing on you. c) Little leeches will come towards you to distract you. 2) Javelin - In stage 1 after you pass the first exit. However, I do not know how to reach it. It inflicts damage on him while making him blind. C. Castle stage This stage is also another easy stage. However, the boss is tough since it has three (yes, three) sseparate life bars. 1) Chimera - This boss is tough especially when he has three heads you have to kill individually. Try to focus on one head. If you can find the scimitar, you'll definitely have an easier time than those who did not find it, like me. This boss has only two attacks: it spits fire which the amount, and speed increases when 2/3 of his life bar is gone, and an onmi attack where all three heads shoot a powerful burst of energy. This only happens when you get close to him (Which you should NOT do). To reduce the battle difficulty, you should have the Dove familiar, and your level should be higher than thirty. This way, the Unicorn can do more damage to the heads. 2) Scimitar - I heard that it is in stage 2, but I do not know where it is. He can be beaten without it. It decapitates the lion head. D. Forest Stage This is one of the MANY irritating stages in Dark Legacy. Luckily, the Unicorn can make it through if you are CAREFUL. Do not rush into fights, or expect to lose a lot of health, or even a level. The boss is a B*TCH. 1) Spider Queen - I hate this boss. She is the BIGGEST B*TCH in the game so from now on I'm calling her the Spider B*tch, or B*tch. She was impossible for me to beat when I had a level 39 Unicorn. If you have the Toxic Billows from one of the forest stages, consider yourself lucky. The B*tch has two attacks: She spits stuff at you, and she charges towards you while beating the sorry crap out of you. You can dodge the spit, but it's almost impossible to avoid her charge, and her attacks. It is very impossible to avoid her close attacks when after she charges towards you. She is a relentless pain in the arse B*TCH!! Luckily, she is less irritating to fight when you have a level 99 Unicorn. 2) Toxic Billows - I do not know where it is. E. Forsaken Province Another irritating stage. Refer to the Forest stage section for adivce when it comes to stages. The boss is perhaps the second most annoying boss in the game next to Spider B*tch. GET THE GOOD BOOK from the stage before you fight the boss, or do not bother coming to this realm unless your Unicorn is a level 50+ character. 1) Lich - I hate this guy. He is the hardest boss in the whole game next to the last three bosses, and Spider B*tch. He has three attacks: a) He throws traps to make you walk like a turtle while liches attack you. Be careful not to touch the traps. b) He will jump and try to cut you with his axe. RUN AWAY from him. c) He will shoot projectiles. You can easily dodge them. 2) Good Book - Stage 4; Go past the first exit, and continue until you see the second exit, hit the switch to reach the exit, and smash the wall behind the exit. It will reveal a trigger that will raise the Book of Protection so you can grab it. Get this item!! It weakens him until you inflict a lot of damage on him (2/3 worth). F. Ice Realm I don't get it. This realm is pretty easy to beat if you simply take a straight path all of the time. Just try to block the projectiles from the miners and worms. The Polar Bear in this stage is awesome, and it is a cool golem replacement in this realm. The boss isn't that bad. He can be annoying, but not impossible to beat. 1) Yeti - He is not as tough as the last two, but you should get the boss weapon to reduce the difficulty. To reach him, you have to touch the tiles to transport you to the Yeti. He has three attacks: a) A seismic wave when he slams the walls that are on his left and right side. I do not think you can dodge this one. b) Stalagmites will pop out from the ground when he jumps up and down. try to avoid it when you see it coming out of the ground. c) A big snowball will come from the top part of the screen to hit you. this one is easy to dodge. 2) Parchment of fire - In stage 2; There is a furnace that you can climb. Climb the whole furnace to grab it, but you might have to hit a switch or two to get it. It creates a temporary fire shield that prevents the Yeti from throwing big snowballs at you. Very Useful, and easy to find. G. Dream World Prepare to cry. This is the most F'ed up realm in Dark Legacy. The stages are long, but the boss is not tough if you are by yourself. If someone is playing with you, you'll have an even easier time defeating him, ans going through the stage as long as you cooperate with the other player(s). Stage 1 - Do not use the Wheel of Death too much unless you really need to. You will need the Turbo meter to block the kamikazi monsters that hog a road that you have to take after riding on the merry-go-round. Prepare yourself to block a lot of projectile, and kamikazi attacks. Stage 3 - This is the scariest stage I have ever seen. It's long and sick looking as the floors will switch their appearance. and the background turns from a starry night to a sunny day. The level design can take a lot of tokens from you. There are times where you can not hit the demons that shoot arrows at you. Be careful when you are using your Wheel of Death attack. The damage you thought that the Wheel has done actually has done nothing. Do not give up hope. Thank god there are only three stages, and this is the last one. Do not pick up the pojo egg item at the end of the stage. 1) Wraith - This guy has an accuracy, and precision problem. You can easily dodge his attacks, and pelt him with your Wheel of Death, familiar attacks, and mace. He has only two attacks that I can recall: a) a projectile that can be blocked. b) and he lashes out these black points from his hand. You can not dodge them, but you can avoid them. 2) Lantern: I do not know where it is, nor do I know its effects. H. Desert stage: This is the EASIEST realm in the whole game. They really botched up the difficulty in the realms in DL. I am not going to go into any details with this one. You should have no trouble with this realm especially with the Unicorn (You must seriously suck especially if you can't beat this realm with the Unicorn). 1)Genie - He is ridiculously easy in a single player game. The only time when he is difficult is is in Multiplayer games. He is so ridiculously easy with the Unicorn that he is a joke. You don't even need the weapon that is supposed to make the fight easier. Out of the four attacks that he has, three can be easily avoided: a) He swings his sword ONLY if you are close to him. b) He shoots a porjectile out of his eyes. You can dodge this one. c) He makes a cyclone which can be easily dodged. d) He shoots a laser that can not be dodged. 2)Shadow Lamp - You can easily find it once you pass the water in stage 2, but you do not need it. The genie is so easy that you really do not need this item. All it does is blind the genie while doing no real damage to him. I. Cathedral Stay away from the monsters in this stage. While the Unicorn is a good fighter, it's better to get rid of the traps and monsters from a good shooting distance. Get the boss item before fighting Skrone. Look for the switches that can reveal items such as three way shots that can help you defeat the monsters in this stage. 1)Skorne (1) - This guy is tough. Use the boss item on him. It will prevent him from using projectiles. If you did not bring it, get ready for a tough battle. He has the following attacks: a) Fireballs that he can constantly throw at you. You can dodge these. b) Fire that comes up from the ground when he slams his fist on the ground. c) He will shoot a big burst of energy from his helmet. d) He has the usual siesmic wave. 2)Soul Savior - This will make a shield that prevents him from using projectiles on you. It also takes 1/2 of his health. Look for it as you hit all of the swtiches in the game. You will find it near the exit as a switch will reveal it's location. J. Underworld Prepare to be in an orgy from hell. What ever you do, STAY AWAY from the monsters from the game. They are all level 3 monsters, and they come out of the generators like kids are rushing for Pokemon toys. There is no way you can clear this stage by close combat even. Even if your Unicorn is a level 99 Legend, they can kill you in five seconds. Having eight magic potions, and lots of cash for the next fight with Skorne (15000+ after buying the potions) will help you beat this stage. Stay away from the golems in this stage. There are four golems (yes, four) that guard the switches that unlock the portal, and not even a Unicorn can take down all four golems in close combat. Maybe four level 70 - 99 Unicorns, but not one Unicorn. Take the first golems out from a shooting distance. Wake it up by getting close to the floor from the bridge, but do no go in there until you destroyed the first golem. Try to beat the second golem in close comabt without waking the others. It is hard, but possible. Trap the last two golems after waking them up around the big block in the center of the floor where they can not reach you. If you can beat this stage without using any tokens, you have my respect. Skorne (2) - If you thought Skorne was tough, you have not seen ANYTHING yet. This time, he is ticked off from the last fight. He has all of the attacks from the previous fight, but this time he can pick you up, and slam you to the ground. If you saved 15000+ gold, buy a lot of the following: gold invulnerability, three way shots, and rapid fire (Thanks, JLakin). There are no special items that help you in the fight. K. Battlefields of Garm Another hard stage to deal with. To be honest with you, the last three stages are not that bad. You have to be patient and careful. With the Unicorn, it is a little bit easier since he has balanced stat points, but nevertheless, be careful. You can easliy lose a lot of tokens even with the Unicorn by being reckless or worse . . . a level from Death. Garm - This is the final battle. Are you ready for the hardest battle in your life? If you have made it this far, more power to you for you are one of the VERY FEW people who have made it this far. He is pretty tough since you have to inflict TONS and TONS of damage to him. He takes very little damage so the battle can be pretty long. He has some pretty cheap attacks: a) He shoots the typical projectile. You can dodge it. b) Shoots a big beam of fire that can inflict a LOT of damage. You can avoid it if you're agile. Besides, this attack is predictable, when you see his eyes glow, that means he is about to do it. c) A super seismic wave that makes all of the other attacks look and feel like a little prick. You can't dodge this one. d) He'll summon wizards to use a fake Demon Skull (Wizard's level 3 Turbo attack) attack. They do not inflict a lot of damage, and the Unicorn can take them out with a blow from the mace. He is not that insanely hard if your Unicorn's armor points are around 800-900+. With those kind of points, the Wizards do not take a lot of Health points from you, and you can actually survive Garms attacks. However, it doesn't hurt to put six tokens worth of health in the machine as the extra health will also help you too. If you have 20,000+ gold with you, buy the same items that you used on Skorne #2. However, add a phoenix familiar, or two, and double the amount of items that you needed in the past fight in order to beat this guy. "Good Luck ... you'll need it," - Smash Tv! Announcer. Note: There is no weapon that will help you defeat him. ----------------------\ 5. Multiplayer Games. ) ----------------------/ When playing Dark Legacy with another person, you will be in a lot of troublesome situations which depending on the characters you, and the other player(s) are using. This is what you should do in the following situaions: 2 - 4 Players: Unicorn, Any fighter, and a magic user (Wizard/Sorcress) Let the magic user deal with the potions. The Unicorn is good with potions, but the Wizard and the Sorceress are better. Let the Unicorn help the fighters while defending the magic users. 2 - 4 Players: Unicorn with three other fighters: Let the strongest be in the front. Since the Unicorn is the third strongest character by means of Power, put him up in the front. However, let the others get some EXP. 2 - 4 Players: A Unicorn with magic users: the strongest magic user should help the Unicorn in combat. while the others will be the support characters. Here is what you should do if you are with the following characters as the Unicorn: Wizard and Jackal: Keep them away from the monsters. They can attack level one and two monsters without any problems, but it's the level three monsters that are irritating (some of them can shoot projectiles). Let them have the potions, but carry a potion or two for yourself in case you might wind up in a situation where the Wizard and Jackal can not help you. Sorceress and Medusa: Do the same as you would with the Wizard, but be more cautious with them. They are weaker than the Wizard. After all, her little stick is nothing compared to that big @$$ mace of yours. Warrior and Minotaur: Let them deal with the close combat when it gets intense, but try to help them. They may have more power points than you, but there will be times when the two of you will be surrounded by the enemy. Since the Unicorn is better with Magic, let him have all of the potions unless a Wizard joins in. Dwarf and Ogre: This is the only combo that will have some serious problems. The Dwarf is SLOW, and can easily die in close combat since it takes him forever to swing that stupid hammer. The Ogre is even worse. As the Unicorn, you will need two things: patience if the person using one of these two REALLY sucks with him, and cooperation. You will have to help the Dwarf with the close combat, and try to use the Dive Bomber, or the Dwarf's combo attack. Both are very effective. Valkyre and Falconess: Mix it up all of the time. They should fight certain monsters from close combat while you support them in the back, and vice-versa. Try the combo attack with one of them (especially with the falconess). It looks pretty cool. However, help each other in close combat. Knight and Unicorn: Do the same with them. Share the potions, and items as both you and your partner's character (whether he/she is using the Knight or Unicorn). Always help each other in battle. If you are using the Unicorn, and somebody else is using the Knight, you attack the monsters infront of you while the other player's Knight can support you from the back. Archer and Tigress: Keep her away from the combat, and let her do the sniping. The coolest thing about Dark Legacy is how you can use the 3D stages to your advantage (or disadvantage if you're not careful). You can pick off enemies from a high level. While any character can do this, the Archer and Tigress are the best at sniping since they are the fastest characters, and their arrows are fast. The Unicorn's mace is a tad slower than the Archer's and Tigress' arrows. Just do not let them go anywhere near the enemies. Jester and Hyena: The Jester and Hyena should stay away from combat all of the time. They are too weak to defeat most of the monsters in the game. Let them support you while you are going in for the kill. Let them do some sniping when you will be in an area that allows you to pick off monsters that are below you. What makes a great team? Here is a good list: 2 Player: Unicorn and Jackal. 3 Player: Unicorn, Tigress, and Jackal 4 Player: Unicorn, Minotaur, Tigress, and Jackal, or Medusa Two Unicorns, and two Jackals. Four Unicorns (Four Horsemen. Get it?). ---------------------\ 6. Dreamcast Version ) ---------------------/ Yes, there will be a Dreamcast version based on this game. However, it will be called Gauntlet Legends. All the characters from Dark Legacy will be in it. I have played the demo, and it is INCREDIBLE!! You can see the Knight's hair. Expect the following: - Those stupid obelisks . - ALL the stages. - ALL 16 characters, and if Midway loves us, MAYBE more (Pojo?). - The same save feature found in the arcade game (The demo starts out like the arcade game with the initials). This will be great since it can save VMU space. The game will be released on June 7th. Well, WHAT are you waiting for? Go out and reserve it. ---------\ 7. Q + A ) ---------/ Q1: Can I post your FAQ on my site? A: As long as you give me credit, you may post it. I don't want to go on a site, or a message board, and see the message "That Magma guy?
