Introduction << =============================================================================== Hi, I'm Miki! Do you like Sega games? Okay, so that was bad. Well, I'm Jaime and I like Sega games, especially the ones I used to play as a kid. Ah, the good ol' Master System had all my favorites... Phantasy Star, Maze Hunter 3D, and, of course, Fantasy Zone 2. This is my first published FAQ (was working on one for the Japanese dating sim for girls, Angelique Duet, for a while, but never finished it), so I'm giving it my best shot. If you have any questions, would like to suggest something I've missed, or find something that should be corrected, please let me know. This guide is (c) Jaime Wawra, 2003. --Jaime clavis@rahenna.com =============================================================================== >> 02. Story << =============================================================================== If you wait at the title screen, you'll get three demo scenes. The fourth scene will be the game story, which is as follows... * Previously, in the space year 6216, a courageous hero called Opa-Opa annihilated the invading enemy and restored peace to the "Fantasy Zone." * Now, 10 years have elaped, and the "Fantasy Zone" has expanded its domain severalfold, however a crisis is once again unfolding. * In deep contemplation, Opa-Opa recalls to mind the battle he fought 10 years ago and wonders who was the mastermind behind their leader. Foremost in his thoughts is the whereabouts of his father, who disappeared after the truth became known that he was the enemy leader. * Now, history is repeating itself, and the planets that make up the "Fantasy Zone" once again find themselves being victimized by the mastermind of the Nenon planet forces who is using them to secretly construct a huge fortress in the "Fantasy Zone." * To put an end to their ambitious plans, just as he had done 10 years ago, Opa-Opa promptly takes off for the "Fantasy Zone." * Where..... =============================================================================== >> 03. Gameplay << =============================================================================== 'Tis simple, really. Use the directional pad to move Opa-Opa around the screen. Button 1 fires the beam weapon, and button 2 is used for bomb weapons. =============================================================================== >> 04. Walkthrough - Notes << =============================================================================== Just some general information about how the rest of the walkthrough sections are set up. I'll start with some blatantly obvious observation. ^_^ Then there will be a small list of information, like so: SECRET ITEM**: If there are any, the names will be given here. SECRET SHOP**: Yes or no. SCREENS: The number of screens that make up the round. BASE STRENGTH: How many (regular) bombs it takes to destroy an enemy base. ** The locations of secret items will be explained at the end of that round's section. This is just at-a-glance information. After this will come BOSS, SHOP, and SECRET details. Note that I have no idea what the real names of the bosses are, so I just made up some smartass fake names. ^_~ =============================================================================== >> 05. Walkthrough - Round 1 - Pastaria << =============================================================================== Pastaria is a happy, cute place with grass and flowers and bunnies... Okay, no bunnies, but you get the idea. It's cute. How annoying. Start killing stuff. SECRET ITEM: none SECRET SHOP: none SCREENS: 3 BASE STRENGTH: 4 bombs SHOP * screen background - pine forest +---------------+------------+------------+ | Big Wings | Wide Beam | Twin Bombs | | Normal Engine | Laser Beam | Big Bomb | +---------------+------------+------------+ BOSS: Evil Tree The tree creature is nothing. What you need to worry about are those floating logs that you have to dodge while bombing the heck out of the tree. The trick is to fly up to the top of the screen as soon as you get into the boss area. Stay out of the corner and stick to the top, back far enough so you can drop bombs on the overgrown stump. It helps to have the Twin Bombs here so you can destroy the boss before you get to the point where there's a log at the top of the screen that will smash you. The eye of the tree (hmm, weird) will go from white to blood red as you do damage. =============================================================================== >> 06. Walkthrough - Round 2 - Sarcand << =============================================================================== Sarcand looks like a weird candy land or something. The most dangerous enemies here are the ones that look like snake mouths, as they can trap you against the top or bottom of the screen. SECRET ITEM: Red Bottle SECRET SHOP: none SCREENS: 4 BASE STRENGTH: 7 bombs BOSS: Crazy Totem Pole of Doom This boss has several layers that change color when they take damage. Knock out all the layers and the head will explode when it hits the ground. This is pretty simple if you stay toward the left of the screen, as that gives you a lot more time to dodge between the axes that are flying at you. SHOP * screen background - pastel triangles +---------------+------------+------------+ | Normal Engine | Wide Beam | Twin Bombs | | Extra Ship | 3-Way Shot | Smart Bomb | +---------------+------------+------------+ SECRET ITEM! Your first secret item can be found on the screen with the pastel triangles in the background (where the Shop is). One of the Warp Zones in this area is at the very top of the screen. Go to the bottom of the screen directly under the Warp Zone and bomb like crazy! If you're hitting the right place, you'll hear the same sound effect you hear when your bombs hit an enemy base. Drop seven bombs worth of fire on this spot and a Red Bottle will appear. =============================================================================== >> 07. Walkthrough - Round 3 - Hiyarika << =============================================================================== Hiyarika is an ice world with frigid theme music. Very nice backgrounds, I think this round has the best graphics. SECRET ITEM: clock SECRET SHOP: yes SCREENS: 5 BASE STRENGTH: 9 bombs BOSS: Giant Ice Cube Just blast away at this giant chunk of ice. It will occasionally spit balls of ice at you, but they move slowly and are easily dodged. Since this boss is HUGE, it's hard to miss even if you aren't aiming, so keep shooting! SHOP 1 * screen background - purple with ice crystals growing from the bottom +------------+------------+-----------+ | Big Wings | Laser Beam | Big Bomb | | Jet Engine | 3-Way Shot | Fire Bomb | +------------+------------+-----------+ SECRET SHOP! * screen background - dark blue ocean with icebergs The shop is located at the bottom of the screen. See that suspiciously empty space where it's blue with no icebergs? Hmm. Bomb the heck out of it to reveal the shop - this is the ONLY place to get a continue. +------------+-------------+---------------+ | Big Shot | Red Bottle | Auto Beam | | Shield | Blue Bottle | Continue Game | +------------+-------------+---------------+ SECRET ITEM! There is a hidden clock on the same screen as the Boss Warp. Just stand under it and fire to the left. The clock will appear in the space below the two diamond-shaped crystals. =============================================================================== >> 08. Walkthrough - Round 4 - Bow Bow << =============================================================================== Bow Bow is a fiery world with volcanic scenery and fire-themed monsters. SECRET ITEM: Blue Bottle SECRET SHOP: none SCREENS: 5 BASE STRENGTH: 12 bombs BOSS: Green Dragon This dragon boss moves around the screen in a predictable figure-eight pattern. Avoid the long body and the four fireballs it occasionally shoots and blast it in the head. As you do damage, the dragon will change from green to bright blue before exploding in a convenient cloud of money. Mmm, money... SHOP 1 * screen background - dark cave-like area with weblike fire +---------------+--------------+------------+ | Normal Engine | Turbo Engine | Smart Bomb | | Jet Engine | Twin Bombs | Heavy Bomb | +---------------+--------------+------------+ SHOP 2 * screen background - brown rock & yellow/orange flame +-----------+------------+------------+ | Wide Beam | 3-Way Shot | Big Bomb | | Big Shot | 7-Way Shot | Extra Ship | +-----------+------------+------------+ SECRET ITEM! A Blue Bottle (refills health meter) is on the screen where Shop 2 is found. Go to the Shop first, then go left past the two Warp Zones. See that little notch-like part of the background, near the bottom of the screen? Shoot/bomb it like crazy. Again, listen for the sound of the shots hitting something, and watch as your fire "disappears" at that point. After you do 12 bombs worth of damage, the Blue Bottle will appear. Be sure to reveal and use it AFTER you have taken a few hits and actually need it. ^_^ =============================================================================== >> 09. Walkthrough - Round 5 - Chaprun << =============================================================================== Chaprun is a watery world where all the enemy bases are located on either the extreme bottom (easy to bomb) or extreme top ($%^#& annoying to bomb) of the screen. Even so, this is my favorite round. Must be the overly cute music. SECRET ITEM: none SECRET SHOP: yes SCREENS: 5 BASE STRENGTH: 16 bombs BOSS: Big Ugly Face This boss is really simple, especially if you picked up the Twin Big Bombs earlier in the round. It starts small and puffs up... the face can only be damaged when it's at full size. Bomb the snot out of it. It will get small again and move around a little, then puff up. It only took me three "puffed" states to bomb this sucker into neon-orange oblivion. The only potentially tricky thing is that the boss will move faster the more damage it's taken, but since it's so easy to hit, you should be able to destroy it before that becomes an issue. SHOP 1 * screen background - goofy palm trees +------------+--------------+------------+ | Big Wings | Turbo Engine | 3-Way Shot | | Jet Engine | Laser Beam | Fire Ball | +------------+--------------+------------+ SHOP 2 * screen background - blue rivers on green hills +---------------+----------------+------------+ | Rocket Engine | Big Bomb | Fire Bomb | | 7-Way Shot | Twin Big Bombs | Heavy Bomb | +---------------+----------------+------------+ SECRET SHOP! * screen background - green "swimming pools" with green & yellow poles (?) The shop is located at the bottom of the screen. It's pretty much right between the two Warp Zones. Fire away at the bottom... listen for the shots being "absorbed" by nothing... and it will appear. +------------+-------------+------------+ | Wide Beam | Red Bottle | Auto Beam | | Twin Bombs | Blue Bottle | Shield | +------------+-------------+------------+ =============================================================================== >> 10. Walkthrough - Round 6 - Fuwareak << =============================================================================== Fuwareak is a cloudy world with happy pastel colors. Don't be fooled, this place can be tough, as the critters move fast and two types can shoot back. SECRET ITEM: Blue Bottle SECRET SHOP: yes SCREENS: 5 BASE STRENGTH: 20? bombs BOSS: Multi-Layered Rock Thingy This boss moves left and right across the screen while expanding upward. You need to destroy each segment of the boss to defeat it. The top parts are easy to hit, so start with the bottom. You need to be fast, and good bombs help. SHOP 1 * screen background - clouds with yellow/purple poles (starting screen) +---------------+------------+------------+ | Normal Engine | Fire Ball | Fire Bomb | | Wide Beam | Smart Bomb | Heavy Bomb | +---------------+------------+------------+ SHOP 2 * screen background - weird pink stuff +---------------+------------+----------------+ | Turbo Engine | Big Shot | Twin Big Bombs | | Rocket Engine | 7-Way Shot | Extra Ship | +---------------+------------+----------------+ SECRET SHOP! * screen background - green/white mountains against light blue sky The shop is located at the bottom of the screen. It's pretty much right between the two Warp Zones. Fire away at the bottom... listen for the shots being "absorbed" by nothing... and it will appear. +------------+-------------+--------------------+ | Laser Beam | Red Bottle | Shield | | Auto Beam | Blue Bottle | Extra Ship ($100!) | +------------+-------------+--------------------+ =============================================================================== >> 11. Walkthrough - Round 7 - Sbardian << =============================================================================== Sbardian. And exactly HOW is that pronounced? Anyway... watch out. Everything here moves FAST. If you haven't upgraded to at least a Turbo Engine yet, now's the time to consider doing so. SECRET ITEM: clock, Red Bottle SECRET SHOP: none SCREENS: 6 BASE STRENGTH: 20 bombs BOSS: Ugly Face on Rotating Steel Pole Annoying, this one is. The face spins around and spits a ton of little fireballs every time it comes to face you. These fireballs do twice the damage of normal ones, so be careful. The trick - go up to the top of the screen, close to the pole, and keep dropping bombs. The little fireballs will just miss you, since they don't head straight up and down from the face. Just be sure to back up a little bit if the pole starts getting too close. SHOP 1 * screen background - white with blue ovals at the bottom +---------------+---------------+------------+ | Normal Engine | Turbo Engine | Laser Beam | | Jet Engine | Rocket Engine | Big Shot | +---------------+---------------+------------+ SHOP 2 * screen background - brown rocks, ocean scene +------------+----------------+------------+ | 7-Way Shot | Twin Big Bombs | Smart Bomb | | Fire Ball | Fire Bomb | Heavy Bomb | +------------+----------------+------------+ SECRET ITEM! You can uncover a hidden clock on the screen with all the cacti. Look for a black oval underneath a small cactus with both its "arms" up. Shoot there until the clock appears. SECRET ITEM 2! There's a Red Bottle hidden on the screen with the brownish background that has pink/red formations (it's the screen where the Boss Warp is located). Stay at the bottom of the screen and walk right from the Boss Warp, firing all the way to uncover the Bottle. =============================================================================== >> 12. Walkthrough - Round 8 - Wolfin << =============================================================================== No secret items, no shops, no goodies. Just bosses. Time to fight them all again, one after another, because they weren't dead enough the first time. Before you enter this round, you are taken to a three-page Shop screen. PAGE 1 +--------------+---------------+------------+ | Big Wings | Normal Engine | Jet Engine | | Turbo Engine | Rocket Engine | Extra Ship | +--------------+---------------+------------+ PAGE 2 +------------+------------+------------+ | Big Shot | Wide Beam | Laser Beam | | 3-Way Shot | 7-Way Shot | Fire Ball | +------------+------------+------------+ PAGE 3 +------------+------------+----------------+ | Twin Bombs | Big Bomb | Twin Big Bombs | | Fire Bomb | Smart Bomb | Heavy Bomb | +------------+------------+----------------+ Stock up on your favorites. It's game-end time. Use the boss strategies given in the previous sections until you reach the eighth and final boss... BOSS: Huh? It's Opa-Opa? Yes, that's right, folks. You get to duke it out with yourself. But first, you must shoot those pink spidery things that are crawling out of the walls. Watch out for the last one; it tries to trap you and can be hard to defeat. Destroy all four of them and your evil twin appears. He's VERY hard to defeat as it can be hard to see (and thus, dodge) his shots. Try staying to the left side of the screen, glue your finger to button 1 (assuming you have Auto Shot) and move up and down. If you're lucky, he'll go down to the bottom of the screen and sit there for a while. Bomb him where it hurts. (That would be all over, in case you were wondering. ^_^) ENDING !!! S*P*O*I*L*E*R !!! (You have been warned. Rar.) Your double explodes, then reforms, beckoning you to follow. A blue barrier opens up, revealing a HUGE Opa-Opa-like spaceship. It appears to have an eye. A tear drops from Opa-Opa and falls onto the double, which disappears for good. The large ship moves offscreen to the left, and Opa-Opa follows. This text appears on the screen: * With the riddle of "who is the enemy's mastermind?" further deepening, the war comes to an end. Peace will once again be restored to the Fantasy Zone. Space year June 29, 6226 Then scrolling text with images of Opa-Opa... * Who was the mastermind leading the enemy forces that so closely resembled Opa-Opa and fought with the same functional weapon? * It was in reality, Opa-Opa's other self. * Due to the emotional stress brought about as a result of a war during his childhood, he developed a dual personality of virtue and vice, unknown even to himself. * Only his father was aware of this fact. * Splitting into 2 seperate beings, he became in addition to his role as the hero, the enemy's mastermind, thus because of the paternal bond existing between them, his father had no alternative but to assume the role of their leader. * Now, as a result of Opa-Opa's courageous victory, the evil being that dwelled within him has been destroyed. Deeply moved, Opa-Opa can no longer contain his tears, which as they fall, signify his return to the sole path of righteousness. * Opa-Opa vows that never again will war occur. * THE END Personally, though, I'd say that was more of a one-man (er, ship, whatever) slaughterfest than an actual war... =============================================================================== >> 13. Item Lists << =============================================================================== Some of the prices may not be exactly right. I'd swear that the Big Shot costs $6000 but the round 8 shop has it for $5000... so... Tips & Tricks << =============================================================================== Just a few things I've found to be helpful. RECOMMENDED WEAPONS (aka my favorites!) BEAM: Big Shot + Auto Beam = rapid fire destruction (and permanent, too!) BOMB: Twin Big Bomb SPEED: Turbo Engine (Rocket can be too fast in round 7) NEVER STOP SHOOTING. Especially if you have Big Shot and Auto Beam. Tape down the button if your finger gets tired of pressing it. You'll kill things before you even realize they're there. And killing things, especially in later rounds, means that you live longer... and get to KEEP all your cool powerups. MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING. In fact, in later rounds, money becomes less and less important. Pick it up if you can, but don't risk taking damage for it. EXTRA SHIPS vs RED BOTTLES Extra ships are a good thing to have, but remember: You'll only need them if you die. And dying is bad. You lose all your powerups... so an extra ship isn't very useful if you're stuck in round 7 and can't get to a shop before you get killed again. So if you have to choose between an extra ship and a Red Bottle... get the Red Bottle. (And don't forget to fill up with the Blue Bottle AFTER buying the Red one.) =============================================================================== >> 15. Afterword << =============================================================================== Wow. I wrote this whole guide in one sitting. Yes, I was bored. ^_^ In the future I might add an enemy list. I'd like to use the real names of the creatures, though, instead of making things up. I'm sure it was in the manual, I remember seeing it there... alas, said manual is nowhere to be found... Enjoy the guide and have fun! --Jaime aka Naru, Rahenna, Juli, etc document (c) 2003 by Jaime Wawra
