The primary purpose of this document is to help you get those gold medals on all events, and to complete Challenge Mode. The secondary purpose is to explore some interesting and odd elements of the game. Spoiler alert: If you don’t like spoilers, I recommend finishing the first 21 events in Story Mode before reading this FAQ. -------------------- About the Game -------------------- Tokyo Crash Mobs is a puzzle game which involves two college students that must clear scenesters and ninjas for some mysterious psycological purpose. -------------------- Basic Walkthrough -------------------- One day I would like to expand this section for more detail on how to make the game more challenging in Story Mode, to list the differences between red and black notebooks, and to include some tips to help with earning gold medals. However, working through the events is basically the same all around. Finish the event once, then look at the score sheet at the end. Keep trying the event with each scoring criteria in mind until you earn the medal you are trying to reach. You will earn a bronze medal unless you reach a set score threshold, always in multiples of 5 points. Following are the scores needed to earn silver and gold medals. I painstakingly played each event over and over to verify these numbers, so I am almost certain this list is correct. However, I have been known to make typos. If you see an error, please send me a message so I can correct it. This detail might help: If you want gold on this event in the Red Notebook, you will have to work hard. You would think it would be easy to just score 5 points each time you remove a runner while whistling. However, the whistling stops as the runner reaches the yellow warning track. Keeping the leader ahead of the yellow line is difficult enough, and, even though the runner pauses briefly when the whistling starts, you have to have the right color in hand to remove the runner before reaching the warning track. It helps to set up a combo in the lead (2 of one color, 2 of another color, and 1 of the same color as the first 2. That way you have a better chance of removing the runner in one hit. Remove as many runners as possible, but keep working at combos and underjumping. Try to get points for combos and underjumping on every single throw if at all possible. Even if you clear the entire line like this, it still may not be enough for a gold medal. If I kept trying over and over again, I eventually got lucky enough to score the 80 points for a gold medal. This is one of the most frustrating events in the entire game, and I think the game developers made a mistake during testing, and inadvertently set the bar too high. The black notebook for this event is much easier than it appears. The whistling runner will run all the way to the button, giving you plenty of time to act for the 5 point run-wrecker bonus. Remove as many runners as possible, and the gold medal will soon be yours. Also, combos are very easy since the scenesters run so close to Savannah, and they layer nicely for easy underjumping. Challenge Mode is... a challenge. Read on for some in-depth strategies and suggestions: I found Grace’s challenge to be the most difficult of the three. -Be sure to throw a scenester into the ball when it comes rolling through. This will give you a UFO item that is absolutely crucial to completing the challenge. Note that the first ball comes through after you clear 90 scenesters, then every 100 scenesters after that (90, 190, 290, etc.) The ball travels faster every time, so aim as far ahead of it as necessary. -Try to get only combos. Sure, aiming for 2 like colors will shorten the line slightly, but landing combos gives you a heavy advantage over the mobs. In the end, if you want to remove 999 scenesters and clear the challenge, you will have to be building combos with about 90 percent of the scenesters you throw. -Learn to always watch, at the edge of your vision, the color of the next scenester you will throw. Don’t throw the scenester in your hands—throw the one that was next. Not looking at what’s in your hands will greatly improve your speed, and allow you to watch the mobs at all times. -Glance down at your scenester counter from time to time. Try to use your UFO item about at about the 70 or 80 mark. If you use it too early, you may not have it to bail you out when necessary. If you use it too late, you might make a large gap at the 90 mark. If the ball hits the ground, you will have to clear the next 100 scenesters without the help of a UFO. -Don’t miss the ball. If it reaches Grace, she will be stunned for a while. -You don’t have to use every UFO you earn. You should only use it if you are getting pressed back too far. After all, you don’t get credit for the scenesters that have been abducted. If possible, keep them on the screen and combo them away to get closer and closer to 999. Savanna’s challenge was much easier than Grace's. -When the mob starts running, you have to be ready to eliminate the lead scenester at a moment’s notice. Keep a combo ready in the lead scenesters, with the first 2 being the same color, the second 2 being a different color, and the 5th being the same color as the first 2. This makes a better chance of having the right color at the right time to roll either at the 2 lead scenesters, or at the center of the combo. Stopping the lead runner earns you the UFO item. -Don’t hesitate to use the UFO when necessary. -Set up combos anywhere and everywhere. -You should roll under scenesters when necessary, but it does not appear to help you reach the next level any faster. Often it may just waste time waiting for them to jump. The Team Battle is the easiest of all the challenges. (This will also apply to each of the 6 Sunday events in Story Mode). -Do not turn on the stylus controls. You will have much a more precise aim with motion controls, and you can dodge faster. -Make sure the voices are turned on in the sound settings. The various grunts from ninjas will indicate the moves they are about to make. -In the later levels, the smoke balls may be too fast to knock out. Just turn your back when you hear the grunt of the ninja, and avoid them altogether. -Take as much time as you need. There is no timer. Turn your back quickly, and it should be very easy to set up combos without taking damage. -------------------- Unlockables -------------------- Complete the 21 initial challenges in Story Mode to unlock new features: 100% of the Movies in Movie Maze Black Notebook in Story Mode Team Battle in Challenge Mode -------------------- Frequently Asked Questions -------------------- What is going on here? It sure is odd, isn’t it? Well, Grace and Savannah obviously have some very eccentric delusions. The tutorials basically tell us to ignore the details, and have fun with this wacky game. For more fun, read the information about these 2 psychologically challenged youths in the manual. What happens when I earn a medal on all events in Story Mode? When you complete every event in Red Notebook, Black Notebook is unlocked in Story Mode, Team Battle is unlocked in Challenge Mode, and 100% of the movies are unlocked in Movie Maze. Completing the Black Notebook does not unlock anything special. However, note that when you complete each of the 6 ninja challenges on Sundays, you will unlock the 6 secret movies with people dancing. These 6 movies to not appear to count toward your completion percentage in Movie Maze. At the beginning of the Movie Maze you can select the secret movies, which are the single selection above the main directory. When you select it, you can watch all the secret movies you’ve unlocked so far. The Red Notebook shows just Grace and Savannah dancing, but the Black Notebook includes scenesters and a ninja. (The man in yellow can really move.) What happens when I earn all gold medals? Nothing special happens when you earn all gold medals on all 42 events. You get a long column of smiling faces, and the satisfaction of having mastered each event. Why does the system crash often when loading an event? My 3DS would crash, on average, about once every ten times an event is loading. It tends to happen more often on the more advanced events that have more data loading. I tried to reload the software, but this did not solve the problem. I phoned Nintendo Customer Support, and they said nobody has reported this yet. I was surprised. I’m not convinced it is just my system. An error message appears, says any saved data will be lost, then the whole system reboots. It does not harm the save data, because it only happens going into an event, not after completing one. If this happens to you, please phone the Nintendo Customer Support phone number on the last page of the manual, and report it. If enough people complain, maybe they will release a software update. When I upgraded to the New 3DS XL in 2014, I noticed the crash happened much less often, maybe 1 out of 100 events—and it happened only on the later events with 2 lines of scenesters. The New 3DS has a better processor, which is probably why it works better. What happens when I complete the challenges in Challenge Mode? When you clear 999 scenesters in Grace’s challenge, all the remaining scenesters will backtrack single file to where they came from. When you reach level 100 in Savanna’s challenge, all the remaining scenesters will float into the air and disappear. Reaching level 10 in Team Battle doesn’t look much different than clearing ninjas on the Sunday events. You don’t receive anything special for completing the challenges, except a nice looking status for the scoreboard. What’s going on in these movies? I wonder if these movies are intended to be just plain senseless, or if there are popular concepts that you have to be from Tokyo to understand. I grew up in Minnesota, and here is my take: These two young people have some psychotic delusions about reality, and, though deluding themselves about their abilities, find the means to making peace with each other and with themselves. Regardless of the meaning, the movies were fun to watch, and I would like to see more games like this. Why do Grace and Savannah keep blocking the action when I’m doing well? When you pull off many combos, your friend will jump in front of the screen to congratulate you. This can be very annoying in the Black Notebook when placement is difficult, and the pace is intense. Go into settings on the options menu, and turn off the cameo appearances. For an added challenge, leave the cameos on. Can I play this game if I don’t see color very well? If you are not able to quickly perceive the different colors, the default settings will make the game nearly impossible for you to play. You can still enjoy this game. Just turn on the symbols from the settings in the options menu. When you play the game with symbols, red scenesters will have circles above them, blue have triangles, yellow have diamonds, green have squares, and the black ninjas will have crescents. Do the characters ever stop that annoying yelling? The main characters and scenesters sure make a lot of noise. When you are in the more difficult events, this might start to annoy you. Go to Options, Settings, Sound, and turn off the voices. You can also turn off music or sound effects here too. Note that the voices are very helpful on Sunday events, since the sound the ninjas make will indicate their intended moves. Turn off the voices on Sunday events for more challenge. -------------------- Credits -------------------- Thanks to those who recognize a good game when they see it, and are (like me) fanatic enough to read a document like this. -------------------- Final Note Form The Author -------------------- Email dalemichelleh@aol.com and tell me your thoughts and opinions. --Chickenbolt -------------------- Legal -------------------- I had no part in the programming, distribution, or creation of Tokyo Crash Mobs in any way.
