INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Alien Syndrome' for the Arcade, released by Sega in 1987. This game was also released on many consoles, but as far as I know they differ in levels. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== "The earth command faces a grave crisis. Hideous alien life forms have taken control of Earth's space station and hold its inhabitants hostage. Only 2 brave space troopers step forward to face the challenge. Ricky & Mary must save the hostages and destroy the alien menace once and for all. This overhead shoot'em up game features good graphics & sound as well as simple yet fast gameplay with plenty of weapons to find!" In every round you have a 150 seconds to rescue 10 comrades. There are more than 10 and rescueing the rest only yiels bonus points. To finish the round, exit through the door marked as such. A boss fight will follow with a additional 30 seconds added to the time limits. The more time you spent on the rescue operation, the less time you have on the boss fight. When you manage to beat said boss, the next stage begins. Eventually you will complete all six rounds and move on the seventh round, also known as the Final Boss. Beating him will start the game from the beginning again, with not difference whatsoever in the levels. You get to keep your score and it free to continue playing; I suppose that is good news in a way. Each round has a different enemy. They are easy to kill as it only requires one shot of whatever weapon you are carrying right now. Thefore the only weapon upgrade you are receiving is better range and speed. When the enemies are killed, no more respawn automatically. However, begining with round two, there are hives that will produce more. You can destroy the hive to ensure that the flow of new aliens stops once and for all. In other words, you can clear out the entire level of the alien scum, but your time limit kind of limits this adventure (also the sixth round has unlimited enemies). There is really only a need to annihilate anything that does not get in your way. If you are looking for scoring more points, then maybe you can seek out some more to slay. Because the enemy encounters are purely random, there is no way to describe them in the walkthrough. The signs with a huge MAP written on it lets you check the round's map. The red dots are the comrades you have to rescue. Once ten have been rescued it will only display the EXIT of the round, not the rest of the comrades left in in. As the levels are mighty small and maps are all over the place, it is easy to find your way around. Unfortunately it is not very good in showing doors to rooms etc. The walkthrough will describe how to rescue all the comrades, thus if you only want to skip through to the bare minimum then you may as well try and do this without a guide. It is rather easy to find ten quickly. Controls: ````````` The controls for this game are very simple, you only need to joystick to move around and the button to shoot. There is no difference in choosing the male or female hero/heroin as they are both identical in everything but looks and sounds. Display: ```````` The top left is your current life count, next to it your current score and the high score for this machine. The right side is for the second player if one is available. The bottom left displays the current round. The comrade display is how many you need to rescue before the exit door opens. It decreases by one for each comrade you pick up, naturally. The time on the right is how much is left before the bomb explodes, which means you die. Power-Ups: `````````` The northern side of the walls contain power-ups to collect. They are shown by the various letters as they can be different things. The full list is: ? - Points F - Flamethrower L - Laser O - Turret, up to two can be carried R - Rapid Fire Burst B - Napalm Bombs Scoring: ```````` 100 points for each comrade you rescue in the mission. 100 bonus points for each one your rescue at the end of the mission. 1000 for the 11th comrade, increments by another 1000 for each additional one (i.e. 3000 for the 12th and so). Sometimes I have seen the 11th already giving 2000 points instead of 1000. Not sure if this is a glitch in the scoring. 200 for each alien you kill. There is a Time Bonus for each second you have left. So far I am unsure how the game calculates this, as I have received some inconsistent scores. For example, 40 seconds left gives you 13800 points 44 seconds left gives you 15200 points 69 seconds left gives you 20700 points and if you have 100 or more seconds left you get the max bonus of 60000. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== YOUR MISSION YOUR COMRADES HAVE BEEN CAPTURED BY THE ALIENS DESTROY THE ENEMY AND RESCUE THEM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This being the first level, it is really easy. Rescue the guy just above. Leave the room to the right and south for another one, then all the way to the bottom for the fourth. On the left side of this loop is the fifth comrade and another one is in the center of the corridor leading to the left, where the large room has one more comrade in distress. Now walk back north until you hit the wall and enter the room. This one holds a comrade of course, and the room to the right as well. One more is at the junction going south, but continue east and north around the left side again, collecting the guy on the way, then find one in the center slightly south. Before leaving, go all the way left and pick up the second to last one. The final guy is just in front of the exit door in the north. BOSS ```` Recommended Weapon: Laser The boss has two attacks. One is a slow slime thing, the second are some pink crawlers. You can shoot the crawlers with ease, and avoid the projectiles. The tough part is getting your shot to hit its chest when it opens up to let some stuff out. When you get this right, it will only take a few to explode it. But you are not done. Once it is dead, the head will run at you from time to time. You can only hurt it when it is dashing, thus quickly shoot it and then step to the sides. Luckily you only have to do this a few times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can spot the first comrade immediately. There is another one just to the south of this position, not far. Walk west to find two more soon, then turn south and find two in this corner. On the east side you will find a room, one comrade in the left corner and one in the right. As you leave the room, turn right and enter another sort of room without a door, but it does of course have a comrade inside. North of this is a room with a hole in the middle, rescue the person and move on further north. Rescue the guy on the way, then turn right to find two in the corner. The rest of the people are easy to find by just going all the way west, the finally take the exit at the north center. BOSS ```` Recommended Weapon: Napalm You can only harm this heart-shaped boss when it is large. You can shoot and destroy the rings around it to make it easier to hit it. If you have the napalm weapon then it will go right through the rings and hurt the boss itself. Smaller versions of it will be thrown into your area and crawl towards you, which means you also must take care of those. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies start shooting at this point, be careful. You start out in the middle, and there are four in the south part of this island, one in the northeast and two in the northwest. The outer ring has one in the bottom left corner, bottom right, both sides in the middle and then one more in the top left corner. Walkways at the bottom and near the bottom right will lead to a guy each. Finally, there is one comrade on a walkway in the north. BOSS ```` The boss starts on the right, you start on the left. The green stuff in the middle must be shot to make way to its position. The eyes rotating around the boss are its defense, do not touch it. Its only attack are some kind of waves that crawl towards you, or worms. You can shoot those with ease. To kill the boss you have to take away all its legs by shooting them one by one, then you can finally hurt the main body until it is dead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Easy to find all the comrades in this one. Go south and pick the first one up, then turn left to find another. Go around this path for three more and then turn around to go into the eastern section of the souther part. There is one in the middle and two more on the right. In the northern section, there are two guys in the center and three on each side section. As I said, this one is rather easy to find. The exit is in the top right corner, thus you may want grab those nearby comrades last. BOSS ```` Tough boss. The only vulnerable spot is that face/mask he is wearing. The green attacks are the main problem as they spread out so much, navigating around will be the trickiest of your tasks. The spark at the front also lets a small spark fly straight on, thus be careful not to stand around too much there either. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This in turn is much harder to explain. This is more of a maze. There are two comrades on either side of your starting position, pick the left one. Go north and left to find another comrade, going southeast into a room. There are two comrades in this first one, then one more in the following. As you leave the room again, go all the way north for another person. Hug the northern wall as you go east, entering the room to find another guy. Next up you will find two comrades on the east end. Go south to pick up the person you did not at the start of the level, then go south. Continue left and at the far edge you will find a comrade. Return right a bit and go southwest to find a person, then south into the room nearby, and finally find two comrades in the southeast corner. To exit, go north from this position into a room with a comrade, and one last comrade is trapped in the room with the exit door further north. BOSS ```` The main dragon creature is in the large hole on the right. The small holes have minions sticking their head out and using their tongue to whip you. You can avoid them, or kill them if they are too close for comfort. For example, to make space in slaying the dragon, you want to kill the minions around the large hole. The rest are unimportant unless you swerve a lot to avoid the dragons fireballs. To hurt the dragon you actually have to hit it diagonally. Shooting from straight on will not do any damage. This is why I prefer the fire burst, but I am not sure if this is the recommended weapon, the rest may work equally well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The worms that come through the walls are unlimited, you cannot destroy all the aliens in this round. Grab the first person nearby and walk north along the left side. As the path winds north, there is another person on the way. When the corner is reached, you obviously have to proceed east. Spot the green comrade near the center when it gets narrow, then another one southeast of this position near some crater thingy. Collect the comrade in the top right corner before moving south the only way you can. Another lost soul is waiting for you there too. When you reach the southern area, first go even more south and proceed east to find all four comrades in this corner. Return to the junction and follow the way left a bit more, then south to find two trapped guys. Continue north for another, then one on each side when its gets wider again. The final comrade to be rescued is just to the right of the exit door in front of a map sign. BOSS ```` Shoot the organ right below the turquoise face to hurt it. The laser works best here in my opinion, but most weapons will do the trick. The boss has two attacks. One are some yellow projectiles that fly across the screen but are not aimed at you in any way, the second are some nasty worms that will home in on you. They will distract you from hurting the boss in a faster way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROUND 7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FINAL BOSS `````````` You only have the peashooter for this one, but it will do. Run up to the boss and avoid its sucking air. It will create circles that are really deadly. You have to be really quick to avoid it. When you have the chance, run up to the floating head and shoot it with the gun two dozen times. IN THE YEAR 2000 A.D., THE WAR ENDED AND PEACE WAS TEMPORARILY RESORED TO THE EARTH. HOWEVER, NO ONE KNOWS WHEN THE ALIEN FORCES WILL MAKE ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO INVADE AND CONQUER OUR PLANET. IN THE ENVE THAT SUCH A CATASTROPHE AGAIN BEFALLS US ONLY YOU CAN COME TO OUR RESCUE. THE END =============================================================================== XX.) FAQ GXX00 =============================================================================== Q: Is this the same game as released on consoles? A: As far as I know all console ports are different in some way, and not just graphically. If I ever come across a direct port then I will sure to take notice. Q: What's the record score? A: Donn Nauert holds the record for this game with 2,269,200 points on February 2, 1988. Q: How does this relate to the 2007 release on the Wii and PSP? A: I believe that is a sequel of sorts. All the other release up to that point were ports. =============================================================================== YY.)
