It is generally done in postgame. Breeding can be very time comsuming, but it has been made easier and easier to breed in each new Gen. Gen 6 is quite easy to breed and get to breeding five perfect IV Pokemon with the moves and stats you want. --------------------- What is Breeding? [G02] --------------------- Breeding happens when two Pokemon of opposite genders of the same Egg Group are put together in the Pokemon Daycare. As explained above, breeding is a mechanic is almost all Pokemon games. This mechanic is when you put a male Pokemon with a female Pokemon of the same Egg Group to get an offspring of the female Pokemon. Example: I want to breed a Pikachu to get a Pichu. I will need a female Pikachu to get it. I can use any male that is in the same Egg Group as Pikachu. Pikachu is in the Field and Fairy Egg Groups. Meaning you can breed Pikachu with a male Pikachu. You can also breed Pikachu with a Wailord because they are both in the Field Egg Group. You can also breed Pikachu with a Clefairy because they are both in the Fairy Egg Group. As mentioned above, the offspring will be that of the female Pokemon. The only exception to this is Ditto. This Pokemon is in all the Egg Groups (but can't breed with Unbreedable and itself) and the offspring will be that of the Pokemon put with it, regardless if it's male or female. --------------- Why Breed? [G03] --------------- Now that we know what breeding is, Why do we do it? These reasons can vary, but generally boils down to these reason: 1. Complete Pokedex 2. To get more of a rare Pokemon (like a Starter or a Pokemon that can't be found in the current game you are playing). 3. Get Pokemon with Competitive Stats, Natures, Abilities, and movesets. 4. To breed a shiny. Completing the Pokedex is one of the reasons I first started breeding and was the only reason I saw to breed. Many Pokemon have baby forms like (Pikachu/Pichu) or can't catch the preevolution in the current game. Getting more of a rare Pokemon was my second reason. I wanted to trade a Fennekin for a Froakie to complete the pokedex. Breeding Fennekins allowed me to have more of my starter than I had originally. Getting Competitvely built Pokemon was my biggest reason to breed and continue breeding in the Pokemon games. In Gen 6, breeding a Pokemon with Good IV spread, moves, and nature is very easy. This allowed me to get a Fennekin with perfect IV, egg moves, and nature. Breeding shinies are the last reason on the list and it is the most time consuming. I've breed for a couple of shinies that have had 4-5 Perfect Ivs with natures and hidden abilities. This took from days to weeks to get while getting over thousands of competitively bred Pokemon of the same species. But again, this is a very time comsuming process. ------------------ When to Breed [G04] ------------------ You can breed as soon as you hit route 117. But I believe the best time to breed is basically when you beat the game and all it's sidequests. This gives you access to the Battle Resort which has many move tutors, as well as having all or most of the TM/HM moves. Battle Resort also has stats judge to determine a Pokemon's IV stats. Also, you'll be able to have the Hatching O-Power to quicken the egg hatching process. --------------------------------- What to Breed/Where to Start [G05] --------------------------------- What should I breed and how? Now, depending on your reasons determines how much time you put in. If it's just for completing the pokedex, it'll be really fast. If you want a competitive shiny, that'll take years. There are 2 Daycares in ORAS. One is on Route 117, East of Mauville City. The other is in the Battle Resort Area. Where you breed is up to you. I generally prefer the Battle Resort because you can change the music and you can also be in an endless loop just by holding Up there. Along with the Stats Judge being so close by. -------------------- How to get Eggs [G06] -------------------- As mentioned before, you need 2 Pokemon of opposite gender that are of the same egg group to get Pokemon eggs. But the rate you can get eggs varies depending on what Pokemon you put in the daycare. Rate Species Oringinal Trainer Oval Charm Rate ---- ------- ----------------- --------------- 70% Same Different 88% 50% Same Same 80% 50% Different Different 80% 20% Different Same 40% 0% Different Egg group, same gender, or Not breedable. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Source : http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_breeding -------------------- Hidden Abilites [G07] -------------------- Hidden Abilities are breedable! If a female Pokemon with a Hidden Ability is bred with another of the same egg group, it has an 80% chance of passing it's Hidden Ability. Now if you have a male Pokemon with a Hidden Ability, you can breed it with a Ditto with the same chance. Now whether you breed a Hidden Ability is up to you. Some Hidden Abilities are needed for competitive play. Others not so much. Example: Froakie's Hidden Ability vs Fennekin's Hidden Ability. Froakie's Hidden Ability is Protean, which allows it to change it's type as it uses a move. Fennekin's is Magician, which steals the opponents item if Fennekin hits the opponent with a move. Froakie's Hidden Ability is a must have in competitive play because it changes how the Pokemon plays entirely. While Fennekin's isn't needed that much because the Fennekin line can already learn Switcheroo, which switch items with the opponent anyway. -------------- Egg Moves [G08] -------------- Egg Moves are moves that can only be obtained via breeding and DexNav. Egg Moves allow a Pokemon to have moves that are from a different Pokemon. Let's take Eevee for example. Eevee normal can't learn the move Wish (a move often used by Vaporeon and Sylveon). To get Eevee to know Wish, it has to breed with a Pikachu or Skitty that know the move Wish. However, Pikachu and Skitty need to be breed with a Togetic or Slurpuff to have a Pikachu or Skitty to have wish. This is known as chain breeding as you have to breed multiple Pokemon to get different Egg Moves on different Pokemon. Dexnav makes this easier as certain Pokemon like Eevee can simply be found with Wish on them. Egg Moves can also be remembered via the Move Relearner. Unlike TMs and Move Tutor. Rarely will an Egg Move be locked to being breed with a certain item. To get a Pikachu with the move Volt Tackle, you have to breed it with a light ball. ---------------- Breed Items [G09] ---------------- Important items you will need to before you begin breeding competitively: -Everstone -Destiny Knot The Everstone makes the nature of all offspring the same as the Pokemon who is holding it. Example, the male Wailord has a Brave nature and holds the Everstone. When you breed it with your Pikachu, all the Pichus that are hatched will have a Brave nature. And vice versa, your Pikachu has a Timid Nature and holds the Everstone. When you breed it with your Wailord, all the Pichus will have a Timid nature. *How to get an Everstone* An Everstone can be easily found in Granite Cave with the Itemfinder or being held wild geodudes and gravelers.* Destiny Knot is the most important item for breeding competitively. Breeding when one of the Pokemon holding it, that Pokemon will inherit five IVs at random chosen from both parents. Breeding without it, Pokemon will inherit three IVs at random chosen from both parents. Example: I have a Wailord with IVs as such: Wailord m Held item: none IVs: HP 20 Attack 31 Defense 5 Special Attack 12 Special Defense 31 Speed 31 And I have a Pikachu with IVs like: Pikachu f Held item: none IVs: HP 31 Attack 0 Defense 31 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 4 Speed 29 Now when I breed these two Pokemon together without Destiny Knot, three IVs are chosen are random from the Pokemon. So a Pichu breed in this manner could look like this: Pichu IVs: HP 11 Attack 0 Defense 5 Special Attack 18 Special Defense 4 Speed 6 This Pichu got it's attack and special defense stats from Pikachu and got its defense stats from Wailord. The other stats are completely random and so we can't control them like what we want. Now when we give one of the Pokemon a Destiny Knot and then you can get a Pichu that looks like this: Pichu HP 11 Attack 0 Defense 5 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 4 Speed 31 This Pichu got it's Attack, Special Attack, and Special defense stats from Pikachu and got its defense and speed stats from Wailord. Now the stats looks a lot better and has the potential to get a five perfect IV Pichu from the pair with enough breeding and luck. Destiny Knot is the reason why we can easily breed five perfect IV pokemon. Because it gives us the ability to control five out of the six IVs. *How to get a Destiny Knot* Destiny Knot is a reward for beating Young Couple Lois and Hal in Sea Mauville (10% chance) or from a fan after winning a Master Rank Contest from any Contest Hall.* ------------ Incense [G10] ------------ Certain Pokemon need to hold an incense in order to breed the baby of their evolution line. If they don't have their certain incense, they will give the lowest non-baby evolution. Chansey and Blissey Item: Luck Incense Offspring: Happiny Mr. Mime Item: Odd Incense Offspring: Mime Jr. Snorlax Item: Full Incense Offspring: Munchlax Mantine Item: Wave Incense Offspring: Mantyke Marill and Azumarill Item: Sea Incense Offspring Azurill Sudowoodo Item: Rock Incense Offspring: Bonsly Wobbufffet Item: Lax Incense Offspring: Wynaut Chimecho Item: Pure Incense Offspring: Chingling Roselia and Roserade Item: Rose Incense Offspring: Budew ----------- Nature [G11] ----------- Natures are important because they give a 10% increase to a certain stat and a 10% decrease to a different stat. This generally means that you'll want to increase a stat you'll use the most and decrease a stat that is completely useless to your Pokemon. Example: I have a Fennekinthat is Special Attack/Speed focused. So I want it to have a nature that increases either Speed or Special Attack. This Fennekin won't have a need for an attack stat at all. I want Fennekin to have either a Modest Nature (Special Attack up/Attack down) or Timid Nature (Speed up/Attack down). All Natures and Their Properties Neutral Natures (doesn't increase or decrease anything) *Hardy *Docile *Serious *Bashful *Quirky Attack increasing Natures *Lonely (-Defense) *Adamant (-Special Attack) *Naughty (-Special Defense) *Brave (-Speed) Defense Increasing Natures *Bold (-Attack) *Impish (-Special Attack) *Lax (-Special Defense) *Relaxed (-Speed) Special Attack Increasing Natures *Modest (-Attack) *Mild (-Defense) *Rash (-Special Defense) *Quiet (-Speed) Special Defense Increasing Natures *Calm (-Attack) *Gentle (-Defense) *Careful (-Special Attack) *Sassy (-Speed) Speed Increasing Natures *Timid (-Attack) *Hasty (-Defense) *Jolly (-Special Attack) *Navie (-Special Defense) ---------------------------------- What are IVs/How to Check IVs [G12] ---------------------------------- IVs are best explained as a Pokemon natural potential. These are generally invisible stats that determine how strong a Pokemon will be. These stats are best measured when a Pokemon is level 100. For instance, a Fennekin at Level 100 with a Hardy Nature (neutral overall) with 0 IV in special attack will have a special attack of 129. Another Fennekin with the same level and nature with a 31 IV in special attack will have a special attack of 160. So the IV stat can effectively change a Pokemon's stat by a whole 31 points. Which is why we generally want them to be 31. IVs ARE NOT EVs!!! Now, it would be a pain if we had to level each Pokemon to level 100 just try and check their IVs. Luckily, the developers included a NPC that give us a general description of the IVs of a Pokemon. This NPC is often called a Stats Judge. This NPC as been included since Gen 3. In ORAS, this judge is located in the Pokemon Center of the Battle Resort. Depending on what he says gives us a greater look on our Pokemon. Highest individual stat "Incidentally, I would say its greatest potential lies in its " If the Pokémon has two or more equally good best stats, then he will add one of the following lines: "But its Attack stat is good, too." "Hmm. And its Defense stat is good, too." "Although its Sp. Atk stat is equally good." "Its Sp. Def stat seems just as good, though." "And, well, its Speed stat is good, too." To describe the value of the Pokémon's highest IV(s), he will use one of the following lines: IV range of 0-15: "It has rather decent stats, I'd say. That's how I judge it." IV range of 16-25: "It's definitely got some good stats. That's how I judge it." IV range 26-30: "This Pokémon has some fantastic stats. That's how I judge it." IV of 31: "Stats like those... They simply can't be beat! That's how I judge it." Lowest individual stat If a Pokémon has any IV of 0, he will use one of the following lines: "But its HP... It's pretty dismal, you know?" "But this Attack stat... It's terrible..." "But how can you make it through battle with this kind of Defense stat?" "But this Sp. Atk won't even leave a scratch on an opponent..." "But this low of a Sp. Def stat is going to leave you high and dry..." "But you won't get anywhere fast with this low of a Speed stat..." And if there are 2 or more IVs of 0, then he will also use one of the following lines: "And that's quite a disappointing Attack stat there, isn't it?" "And that Defense stat is nothing to write home about, you know?" "And I'm afraid that its Sp. Atk is pretty bad, too..." "And it looks like it's no great shakes when it comes to Sp. Def either..." "And that Speed stat... Well, it's nothing to brag about, that's for sure." In the rare event that all six of the Pokémon's IVs are 0, then he will describe how all its stats are its best stats, and then describe how all of them are bad. Source: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stats_judge With this info, We can determine quite well where our Pokemons IVs are. --------------------------------------- How to get a 5 perfect IV Pokemon [G13] --------------------------------------- Ultimately when breeding, you'll want to have both parents that have four-five perfect IVs in the stats that you want. For example, after I've been breeding for a Fennekin with good stats, I get it to have IVs like this: Fennekin Nature: Modest IVs: HP 31 Attack 2 Defense 31 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 31 Speed 31 So while it doesn't have a perfect Attack IV, the Pokemon is a special attacker and never uses it's attack stat in competitive play. So not having perfect Attack IV doesn't matter for this Pokemon. It has perfect IVs everywhere else, making it completely viable for competitive play. Now how do I get this? Simple answer, Breeding. Long answer, it's kind of complicated. I first had to get a Female Fennekin to be able to have Fennekin offspring with what ever male Pokemon that is in the Field Egg Group, which is the Egg Group Fennekin belongs to. So I used Zorua as the male. In ORAS, you can find Zoruas in the route just above Litteroot. Using the Dexnav function of this game to sneak up on Pokemon, I got a male Zorua with a three star potential. This Zorua's IVs are like this: Zorua Nature:Gentle IVs: HP 31 Attack 25 Defense 31 Special Attack 18 Special Defense 31 Speed 8 This means that this Zorua has three IVs that are perfect. I had to breed this Pokemon with my female Fennekin to get another Female Fennekin that has better stats than the first Fennekin. So my first Fennekin doesn't even have one perfect IV, but the female Fennekin that I got from breeding with Zorua has one perfect IV. I use the female Fennekin that has one perfect IV to breed with the Zorua until I get a female Fennekin that has two perfect IVs. I then use the two perfect IV Fennekin until I get another female Fennekin with three perfects IVs. so at the end of this process, I'll have a Fennekin that might look like this: Fennekin Nature: Modest IVs: HP 31 Attack 14 Defense 31 Special Attack 24 Special Defense 31 Speed 11 So I ended up getting a female Fennekin that has the exact same perfect IVs as the Zorua I catch from the DexNav. So now I can breed three perfect IV Fennekins with ease. But I want five perfect IV Fennekins. So I need to get another Zorua with perfect IVs in Speed and Special Attack. So I return to DexNav til I get another three Star male Zorua with stats like this: Zorua Nature: Bashful IVs HP 22 Attack 19 Defense 6 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 31 Speed 31 Now this Zorua has the two stats that we are missing for our five IV Fennekin. So we continue the process til we get a four perfect IV female Fennekin, and then a five perfect IV female Fennekin. Now you may be thinking, do I have to do this DexNav process for every single Pokemon? The answer is no. Remember that Fennekin and other starters have a lot higher chnace of being male then female. So you'll have a ton more five perfect IV male Fennekins then you'll have five perfect IV female fennekins. Being that Fennekin is a part of the Field Egg Group (Which is the largest egg group in Pokemon), you'll be able to use that five IV fennekin for any Pokemon within the Field Egg Group. So let's say that now we want a five perfect IV Eevee now. We can use breed with a Ditto until we get a female Eevee, then breed the female Eevee with the five perfect IV male Fennekin until we get an Eevee with five perfect IVs. Rinse and repeat for any Pokemon you want to have five IV. Now their are some Pokemon that belong to more than one Egg Group like Pikachu. Pikachu belongs in the Field and Fairy Egg Groups. So I can breed a Pikachu to have five perfect IVs with the Fennekins I have obtained trying to get those to five IVs. Once I get a five perfect IV Pikachu, I can use it for any Pokemon within the Fairy Egg Group as well. I can do this for all of the other Egg Groups. So once you have a five Perfect IV Pokemon, it's a lot easier to breed more Pokemon with four/five perfect IVs. Breeding a six Perfect IV Pokemon is a lot of luck and breeding Pokemon with five Perfect IVs till luck strikes and gives you that six perfect IV Pokemon. The alternate way to get a Pokemon with a good amount of perfect IV Pokemon is to Wondertrade. Wondertrade is filled with many people like me who are trying to breed for that perfect Pokemon and we wondertrade our "trash" that are Pokemon with one-four perfect IVs. These are often called "breedjects" I wouldn't recommend trading on GTS simply because not everyone on there is telling the truth about their Pokemon. So you might trade a difficult to get Pokemon for something that you didn't even want in the first place. I would only use it to get a foreign Pokemon. ----------------- Hidden Power [G14] ----------------- Hidden Power is probably one of the hardest (moreso time comsuming) thing to breed. Being that certain Pokemon need a certain type of hidden power for competitive play. It's also very hard to determine where you're Pokemon has the hidden power you want with the exact stats you want. Again, like the five perfect IV Pokemon, once you have one, it's easier to get others. I would suggest using online tools like veekun.com and others to figure out what the IV count you want for the Hidden Power you want. The process involves constantly checking what Hidden Power it has at Fortree City as well as the Stats Judge. Then leveling them to 100 and use a IV checking tool such as: https://veekun.com/dex/gadgets/stat_calculator to determine if you have your IVs are in the right place. This is a Hidden Power Calculator that I found quite useful to test certain IV counts. http://www.psypokes.com/dex/hp.php Different IV counts can lead to different Hidden powers. Example: a Pokemon with the IV count of Stat IV ----- -- HP 31 Attack 31 Defense 31 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 31 Speed 31 will have a Dark Hidden Power. When a Pokemon has this IV count Stat IV ----- -- HP 31 Attack 31 Defense 31 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 31 Speed 16 They will have an Ice Hidden Power. But let's say I have a Jolteon. I want an Ice Hidden Power on it, but I don't want the 16 Speed IV. This IV count also has HP Ice Stat IV ----- -- HP 31 Attack 6 Defense 30 Special Attack 31 Special Defense 31 Speed 31 So I get the perfect Speed IV, an Ice Hidden Power, and the only downside is Defense lowered by 1 point. -------------------------------- Egg Mechanics/Hatching Eggs [G15] -------------------------------- Now we discussed how to breed and get Pokemon with Moves, Natures, Abilites, and IVs. Now it's time to talk about how to hatch eggs and hatch them quickly. You will need two things: *A Pokemon with the ability Flame Body or Magma Armor (such as Talonflame, Magmar, or Chandelure) *The Hatching Power O-Power (Obtain from completeing the Old Guys sidequest in Mauville City) While I'll like to explain why you need these, I have to explain how eggs work in general. All eggs hatch after a certain number of cycles. A cycle is completed when you walk 257 steps. Let's take an Eevee egg for example. An Eevee needs 36 cycles(about 9252 steps) to hatch. So once you take 9252 steps, the egg will hatch. Now what the effects of Flame Body/Magma Armor and the O-Power. Flame Body/Magma Armor's effect is that it completes two egg cycles instead of one when you walk 257 steps. This means instead of having to take 9252 steps to hatch the egg, it only takes 4626 steps to hatch the egg. It effectively halves the number of steps you need to take to hatch an egg. Now let's look at the O-Power. The O-power decreases the number of steps needed to complete a cycle. The O-Power has three levels: Level 1: about 205 step to complete the cycle Level 2: about 171 steps to complete the cycle level 3: about 129 steps to complete the cycle This means a Level 3 Hatching Power will halve the number of steps you need to complete the cycle. See where I'm going? If we have both Flame body and Hatching Power level 3, it'll only take 2,322 steps to hatch an Eevee egg. This is way faster than doing it without any of these tools. Just to let you know, if you close your 3DS and "Walk"(shake it) 4000 steps, your O-power recharges at one orb per minute. Effectively giving almost unlimited O-power usage for hatching eggs. The number of steps you have taken in the day can be found on the home screen. Only lasts until that day ends. ------------ Shinies [G16] ------------ Now this is the part that everyone probably heard about. It's called the Masuda Method. It's very simple, have two Pokemon from different languages and the rate of shiny Pokemon increases by six times. Effectively making the rate of encountering shines while breeding about 1/1638. Which is a lot better than the normal 1/8192 that shinies are found at. With the shiny charm, the rate becomes something close to 1/512 chance. Why breed Shinies? To get a shiny Pokemon that has the stats, nature, moveset, and ability you want them to have. I've gotten many shinies through breeding and most all of them have been three-five perfect IVs with some having hidden abilities and all having the egg moves I've bred on them. Also, simply from the sheer amount it takes to get the Pokemon you want. You might just find one on accident. ----------------------------- Pokemon That Can't Breed [G17] ----------------------------- These Pokemon simply can't be bred: Cosplay Pikachu Nidorina Nidoqueen
