I will put their names on the bottom so don't lie! Don't bother inserting your name in the bottom either as my original copy will always have the correct sites and GameFAQs will always be the first site I host my guides on. If you see different sites using this guide other than those listed on the one found at GameFAQs, they stole it! If you are a site that is not listed in the GameFAQs version, please remove it immediately! This is a must for any guide, and if you haven’t noticed by now I’ll spell it out for you: COPYRIGHT © NOTICE!!!!!!!! COPYRIGHT © NOTICE!!!!!!!! COPYRIGHT © NOTICE!!!!!!!! COPYRIGHT © NOTICE!!!!!!!! I just HATE people who copy/plagiarize other people’s work and call it their own. What is plagiarism you ask? It’s the technical word for the stealing of other people’s work. It’s also ILLEGAL in every state and country. Patchwork plagiarism is also illegal. This means that someone copies someone else’s work, changes a few words and/or paragraphs, and claims that it is an original work. In other words: DON’T DO IT without my permission!!!!!! Over time, I've gotten tired of all these sites asking to use my guides. People ask, "I read all of your guides. Can I use them on your site?" First off, I doubt anyone would really read through ALL of my guides. They probably just looked at my contributor page and thought they'd get an already written guide, without doing any work. Then, I'd have to go and update all of my guides. So therefore, my guides will ONLY be displayed on sites of my choosing. The sites that already have permission to use my guides may keep on using them, but from now on, my newest guides will have hosting privileges GameFAQs ONLY, and my own site. Other sites will be sites with special privileges, and will only get a guide of mine if I contact them personally. I apologize if you are a reader and find this to be a bit excessive but I wrote this guide for GameFAQs because it's a free site and I give it to them for free. Therefore, I don't want to see this anywhere except the places where I choose since it's also free to view there, as well. Page width of this document: This guide is best viewed in MS Word, Courier New, size 10 font, with 1 inch margins around the document. Apparently, when I change the margins in Word to 1 inch all around, it resets the left and right margins to .92 inches. Just to let you know. Also, since I try to be as thorough as possible when I write my guides, please do NOT send me an e-mail directly. Instead, ask on the GameFAQs Message Boards or the Answers section. Also, do NOT ask me anything about sequels, other games in a series, or anything along those lines. If you absolutely HAVE to ask me a question, keep it within the game I made a guide for. Praise is also accepted, but don't ask for a response, because I won't give you one. Honestly, I get enough junk mail day after day, and I am sick of it. I check my e-mail every day, but I would rather keep my inbox as clean as possible. Also, don't try to sell me anything, as your e-mail will be deleted the moment I see it. Thank you, and good day. ***************************************************************************** *******************************Version History******************************* ***************************************************************************** Version 3.0: Added more and more tips everywhere. Scarescraper Ghosts have been updated with everything I've got so far. Removed "My Notes" from the same section and replaced it with "Appearance," since all Scarescraper ghosts of the same type have identical attack patterns and strategies. Also added some more advanced techniques, found in the General Tips and Tricks section. Version 2.0: The guide now has a proper Polterpup section. I've added some tables and corrected a few errors, as well as made mention of some environmental hazards. Updated the secrets and unlockables with more defined requirements, and filled in more spots in the special ghosts section. The special ghosts section also has the most significant changes, as it's now in table form. Version 1.0: The first version of this guide, and probably my first guide which I've made for a brand new game. Unlike most guides I've written, I don't know EVERYTHING about this game yet and will need to update this guide regularly as I learn new things. As for right now, this guide is done mostly in bullet-point form since it's primarily one big list of tips and tricks. It's too big for a sticky thread on the forums, but needs some refining, which I intend to do soon. Later on, I'll start adding some fancy ASCII art and/or diagrams to make things more legible. ***************************************************************************** ********************************Introduction********************************* ***************************************************************************** After 12 long years, Luigi's Mansion is finally getting a sequel. Seeing as how I wrote the Perfect Score Guide for the first game, I naturally had to pick up Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, on day 1, and I've been loving the game ever since. Now it'll be impossible for me to do another Perfect Score guide because the amount of money obtained in Dark Moon is limitless. Instead, I've been enjoying the online play, Scarescraper Mode, but I've had trouble with online players not knowing what to do. I expected this, seeing as how the game is relatively new, so I got my feet wet with Scarescaper and decided to whip up a quick tips 'n tricks guide of things I've learned in the first week of playing the game. So now, I'll pass that knowledge onto everyone out there not wanting to be a burden to their team, as well as for those wanting to improve their success at completing a few Scarescrapers of their own. ************************************* **********Table of Contents********** ************************************* 1) Getting Started: Basics of Scarescraper Mode Find Code: *1) 2) Facing the Opposition: Ghosts and Hazards Find Code: *2) 3) General Tips and Tricks Find Code: *3) 4) Hunter Mode Find Code: *4) 5) Rush Mode Find Code: *5) 6) Polterpup Mode Find Code: *6) 7) Special Ghosts Find Code: *7) 8) Unlockables and Secrets Find Code: *8) 9) Sites which I have given my permission to use this guide Find Code: *9) 10) Credits Find Code: *10) Note: Find Codes conveniently allow you to skip to the section you're looking for. Mac users will probably have to do it differently so I can't help you there. ***************************************************************************** ***************1) Getting Started: Basics of Scarescraper Mode*************** ***************************************************************************** First off, I should mention this guide was made with strategies in Worldwide Play. I have not played using Download Play or any other mode, but I assume they'll all work the same. Also, don't ask me how to set up a WiFi connection or ask me how to set up your 3DS so that it can go online. For that, you'll want to consult Nintendo's website, Google, or the manual found on the Home menu for your Nintendo 3DS. Now that we've gotten that disclaimer out of the way, let's go over some basic information about the Scarescraper Online Mode of Play. Man, that's a long name. I'll just call it Scarescraper for short. Before you can even play Scarescraper, you will have to complete stage A-4 in the 1-Player campaign. This is because you'll need to obtain the Darklight, so you should be accustomed to all of Luigi's abilities by the time you start playing online. It shouldn't take more than an hour or two to finish it, but once you do, you'll unlock online play. Right, about that.... Since you've obtained and used all of Luigi's abilities in the 1-player campaign, I won't bother to explain those basics either. E-Gadd should have already done a good enough job doing that for you. If not, go back and play those first four stages and don't skip the tutorials this time. So once you've unlocked Scarescraper, you can access it in E-Gadd's lab by going to the main menu and pushing right. If you have a list of missions on screen, push the B button to back out, then try pushing left/right to switch monitors. Scarescraper is the one of the right, the 1-player campaign is the one in the middle, and the vault is the one on the left. Since we're concerned about Online and Worldwide Play, select those options. You'll see a list of other Scarescrapers which other have created. If it's your first time, you'll probably want to join someone else's Scarescraper until you've gotten the hang of things. Be warned, not all Scarescrapers are created alike! There are three difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, and Expert. Obviously, they're taking a leaf out of how McDonald's evaluates the size of their drinks and have left out an Easy difficulty. You'd think it'd make much more sense if they'd name them "Easy, Normal, and Hard," but nobody's perfect. Not even Nintendo. I also find it strange that a Nintendo game lacks an Easy Mode to begin with. Alas, if you're a new player, you'll probably want to play on Normal Mode until you've gotten the hang of things. Also, you may notice that there are different "Modes" of play. These also come in three flavors: Hunter, Rush, and Polterpup. The simplest mode of play is Hunter Mode, so new players might also want to pick a room Hunter Mode on Normal Difficulty. Finally, you might also notice that each Scarescraper has a different number of floors. There are also three choices for this: 5F, 10F, and 25F. Less floors means that you'll finish more quickly, and won't have to face the more difficult ghosts found on higher floors. So to summarize, new players should probably pick someone else's room that says "Hunter Mode, 5F, Normal." I'll explain the different modes in the sections below. As far as difficulties goes, as you increase in difficulty, expect to see ghosts in greater numbers, and stronger ghosts sooner. There are also more traps in the harder difficulties, but I'll go into more detail on this later in its own section, as well. Now, I'll cover the different modes in more detail later, but I can at least give you an overview now. In Hunter Mode, you have to defeat all the ghosts on a floor to proceed to the next level. In Rush Mode, you must first find the exit hatch room, and then have all players step on the pressure plates to release the chest in that room. In Polterpup Mode, you must hunt down and catch all the Polterpups on the floor. ***************************************************************************** ****************2) Facing the Opposition: Ghosts and Hazards***************** ***************************************************************************** This section of the guide covers the hazards you'll find in Scarescraper, as well as a few notable ghosts which will cause you a lot of trouble. ***Traps and Hazards*** Urn Trap: These are the worst, in my opinion. Upon checking a Luigi-sized urn with no plants inside, there is a chance it'll flip over on your head and prevent all actions except movement (you can't open doors, either). Whenever you're trapped by an urn trap, ghosts while gradually spawn in this room, which means you'll have to walk around and try your best to avoid taking damage. If you get hit by one of these, don't feel ashamed to mash Down on the D-Pad, as you have a legitimate reason to call for help. And sometimes they aren't paying attention with all the other emotes and action flying around, so keep hitting it until someone responds. This means you'll have to rely on your teammates to bust you out, as a red bobble will be connected to the bottom (now the top) of the urn. All one of your teammates needs to do is suction this bobble with their vacuum and pull with the A button to release you. Unfortunately it suffers from poor hit detection (the vacuum stream has a hard time connecting with the bobble) so you'll need to stand still. One more thing about that hit detection problem.... it seems that vacuum suction prefers ghosts and objects (like watermelons) over the urn trap bobble, so don't be surprised if your teammates go and clear out the ghosts first before releasing you. Sometimes you'll just have to wait until you have more breathing room in the room. Your best bet is to avoid searching any tall, slender urns that have nothing in them (unless you revealed it with the Darklight). Alternately, you can get hit by a suit of armor's sword swing. This is probably the only way to break out of an urn trap without help from others, aside from getting yourself killed. Note that you'll still take damage, and this is situational at best (because knight statues aren't in every room). ***Carpet Trap*** These are the second-worst traps, in my opinion. As you run through each floor, you may notice that the carpets vary in size. Carpet Traps occur randomly if you step on those large, square carpets which the white patch in the middle. Should you get hit by a Carpet Trap, it'll rise up and surround you, preventing you from moving. You can still perform other actions while trapped, so you can defend yourself, catch ghosts, and reveal objects with the Darklight. Carpet Traps are troublesome, essentially taking you out of the battle until another team member releases you. Therefore, don't hesitate to mash the Down button on the D-Pad, calling for help until someone comes to your aid. In order to disarm a Carpet Trap, a teammate will have to pull on one of the tassels at the corners of the carpet and press the A button. ***Curses*** To me, these are a minor annoyance compared to anything else. When you search an object, curse gas may flow out of it and onto you, making you cursed. This will reverse your movement control scheme, so left is right, and up is down. What's worse about curses is that if you come in contact with another teammate, it'll spread to them as well. It can be cured if someone shines their Darklight on you, or you do the same to them. Curses also makes it harder to catch ghosts. You're probably used to tilting the slide pad away from a ghost while you try to catch it. When you're cursed, you have to tilt the slide pad TOWARDS them instead, making it awkward and even harder to control in a ghost-infested room. Dodging is also harder to do. Curses seem to be less common than the other two, and you can actually avoid them should you check an object which contains a curse. Whenever you're searching objects, always walk up to them and tap the X button, then move on. Curses typically take a half-second to trigger, and it's possible to walk away fast enough to not get hit by them. Like all traps, curses can end your current run if you have enough unfortunate problems happen all at once. You can also simultaneously be cursed and get hit by an Urn Trap or Carpet Trap, so watch out for that. ***Ghosts*** *Since this isn't a Ghostbusting 101 Guide, I expect that everyone knows how to catch ghost at this point. Instead, I'll only mention the worst ghosts to fight in Scarescraper Mode. *Gobbers are those big, fat, yellow ghosts which puke everywhere. Their puke can block doors, which prevents you from reaching the other rooms or backtracking during Red Coin Scramble. Gobbers tend to show up when you're the only person in the room and block you from using the door (unfortunately, it's usually the only door). -If you're alone in a dark room but see no ghosts, try walking up to the doors and see if one shows up. These guys are best defeated by NOT wiggling the slide pad. Instead, maintain a connection and slowly walk in a circle around them until they spew their spew at you, then press A once it passes harmlessly to the side of you. Avoid the slippery puddles s best s you can. *Creepers grab/absorb you, slowing you down for a few moments and do minor damage (but you can break out by mashing buttons). Try to spot them early, as they start off as a purple puddle in the middle of the floor (so vacuum that first to make them vulnerable). They tend to position themselves close to doors to catch unwary prey running around without looking where they're going. Turning up the brightness on your 3DS helps spot them. ***Ghost Tactics in Scarescraper Mode*** *Greenies are normally easy fodder (and easy Gold for upgrades). However, they have some formations with can cause major trouble. For example, an entire hockey team or knight cavalry should be taken out in a group whenever possible, unless you're an extremely skilled player. -The best way to take down a hockey team or knight cavalry is to run around and act as a decoy, let them attack first, evade their spinning attacks, and try to flash ALL of them with at least one big flashlight burst and several smaller bursts. This causes them to drop their weapons and remove them from play (unlike the 1-player campaign, where their weapons fall to the floor and remain in play). Once they've been successfully disarmed, build up another large flash or start vacuuming as normal, since getting a multi-kill racks up a lot of Gold. -For shovel-wielding and spear-wielding Greenies, flash them as soon as they start their attack, not at the end. The timing on these guys is different so you need to react accordingly. As with hockey teams and knight cavalries, spears and shovels will be removed from play once the Greenies drop them. -Other Greenie equipment, which they usually try to bash you on the head with, does NOT get removed from play (except for helmets, turkeys and gift boxes). If it's a melon or pumpkin, this is good news, as you can launch these and get hearts out of them. Spiked balls and rocks aren't as good, and should be left alone (with one exception, mentioned in the next section). *I've noticed ghosts have some fairly standard formations and tactics, so they're a bit cleverer than one might give them credit for. One tactic I've often seen them use it to have Creepers or Slammers as decoys, making it so you attack them first, and then appear out of no where and attack you. -Be on your toes and don't always go to town vacuuming ghosts as soon as you stun them, or you might have a Greenie trying to bash you over the head with a rock. Instead, dodge immediately, or perform a feint by vacuuming only a couple HP, and be ready with your flashlight to ambush the ambushers, allowing a multi-kill. ***Environmental Hazards*** There are also a couple non-lethal hazards found in some rooms that are mostly there to slow you down. I haven't personally seen these on the first five floors of any Scarescraper I've played, so it's unlikely you'll see these on a 5F Scarescraper. There are two different kinds of environmental hazards I've found so far: icy floors and sand dunes. Icy floors, as you may expect, make you slip and make it harder to move around in that room (as well as dodge attacks). Sand dunes simply inhibit movement, slowing your walking speed. ***Others*** Aside from ghosts and traps, there are also various critters and objects which will stir up trouble, but not much trouble. There are also suicidal robots which can be vacuumed or flashed with your flashlight. All of these things should be flashed with your flashlight as normal critters will drop coins, gold critters and gold robots will drop gold bars, and red robots should be flashed for the sake of disarming them. (Flashing and running through a door is the most effective means of disposal.) ***************************************************************************** *************************3) General Tips and Tricks************************** ***************************************************************************** In this section, I will give some tips to help improve your game. Some of these tips might be common knowledge, while others might be not-so-common knowledge. *Go ghost hunting, always. You should not leave ghosts alone, ever. I've even been known to bust ghosts during Red Coin Scramble, because there are so many reasons why it's so important. Here's a few reasons as to WHY: -Increase the G you get. -Increase the W you get. -Get vacuum upgrades, faster, thanks to that extra G. -Spend more time mapping out each floor to make Red Coin Scramble easier. -Ghosts can block doors during Red Coin Scramble. -Increase your own personal score for when all is said and done, and bonus G that you can bring back to the 1-player campaign (although you can far more from the 1-player mode stages). *Plan your time accordingly. A 5F Scarescraper probably takes about 15-30 minutes to complete, while a 25F Scarescraper will probably take about 2-3 hours to complete. Be courteous to other players and don't join a room if you don't have time to spend completing it. *Upon completing a floor, you'll enter Red Coin Scramble. You and your team have to rush to obtain 4 red coins, which will be placed in random rooms. Some notes on this mode: -You will not see them on your map if they are placed in a room that hasn't been entered yet. The game also likes to place them in unvisited rooms, so go there first. -It's best to spread out the instant you complete the level. Don't sit around and gloat while spamming "Good Job!" Run like crazy to any distant rooms, especially the floor layout is like one long, curvy hallway. Watch your map and don't follow any other teammates that are also going in the same direction. -Unfortunately, it seems that the game likes to place the Red Coins as far away as possible. This is worse on harder difficulties when only certain rooms can be accessed through teleportation cabinets, or through a long series of rooms which are not connected to any others. -If you're having trouble clearing a room before Red Coin Scramble because the ghosts won't spawn, try running up to the doors. Chances are that you have a Gobber lying in wait, ready to ambush you in the Red Coin Scramble by spewing on a door. When this happens, the door can't be opened until he's defeated. -If you successfully complete Red Coin Scramble, it's roulette time. You will get a chance at an upgrade, and everyone gets at least one chance at winning on the roulette wheel. Players who picked up a Red Coin will get an extra chance at winning for per each Red Coin they picked up. Possible rewards are as follows: -Poltergust Restorator: Defeating ghosts causes hearts to appear. -Poltergust x2 or x3: The Poltergust is twice or thrice as powerful. -X-Ray Glasses: See all invisible objects revealed by the Darklight. -Map: The next floor's map is automatically filled out for all teammates, so it doesn't matter whoever wins the roulette (unavailable in Rush Mode). ***Flash Feinting*** *Flash Feinting is a technique I like to use, and I've also coined the term since I pretty much invented it! (I haven't really seen others use this much, if at all, since I first wrote about it.) This is an advanced technique I've found through experimentation. -Basically, Flash Feinting is using both the Flashlight AND Poltergust together, almost simultaneously. The basic concept of Flash Feinting is to frequently alternate between stunning ghosts and vacuuming them, allowing you to get multi-kills and disable groups of ghosts who ambush you (see the segment on ghost tactics in the section above). -To perform a Flash Feint, start by stunning a ghost, then start vacuuming, and break it early. Quickly tap the A button and continue to vacuum. This essentially allows you to keep ghosts stunned and disabled for longer periods of time, allowing you to stun entire groups before you finish them all off. -If Flash Feinting seems slow, you're not doing it right. It should be quickly so you can control the situation. You need to be able to break the connection with your vacuum and QUICKLY use the flashlight before they can react. The timing is precise, which is why it's an advanced technique. You need to break the connection after about a second, but Luigi needs to be in control of his footing at the time you perform a Flash Feint. -Flash Feinting is easy to pull off on ghosts with high health. If you can get one charge bar full, pull with A, immediately break your connection, use the flashlight, and continue vacuuming. If you can angle yourself correctly, you can face more ghosts when you Flash Feint, pulling more ghosts into your attack, allowing for a multi-kill. It should almost look as if you never broke your connection when you flashed your flashlight mid-vacuum. This is also the best way to practice Flash Feinting. ***Other Useful Tactics*** *There are two easy ways to gain Gold for upgrades: multi-kills and fully charged kills. Multi-kills happen when you are vacuuming multiple ghosts at one time (max of 3) and fully charged pulls happen when you fully charge your meter and press the A button, killing the ghost in the process. -Try to avoid leeching kills if someone has a multi-kill going. Instead, use your flashlight to stun any other nearby ghosts so the other guy isn't interrupted during his multi-kill. If you're vacuuming multiple ghosts, you get an extra gold bar per kill (20G). -The more upgrades you get, the bigger your charge bar is. -If you kill a ghost with one charge bar, you get 3 coins (3G). -If you kill a ghost with two charge bars, you get an extra gold bar (20G). -If you kill a ghost with three charge bars, you get THREE gold bars (60G). -Combine multi-kills with fully charged kills and you'll get TONS of gold bars, making Gold farming (and upgrade farming) a breeze. This is great if you're playing on harder difficulties and taller Scarescrapers. *Stunning ghosts with the flashlight is an invaluable skill to master: -Fully-charged stuns more easily allow multi-kills. -Stunning helps you to conserve health. -Stunning disarms ghosts of their weapons. -Stunning helps control disadvantageous situations, such as maneuvering around ghosts to revive a feinted or trapped teammate. -Stunning multiple times allows you to bunch up ghosts as you move around them, allowing you to easily get multiple kills. *Always try to keep an eye on your map. Keep an eye out for black doors and green doors. Black doors are always traps. Black rooms have ghosts in them while light-blue rooms do not. If you have time, hunt down ghosts in rooms which are black on your map, especially if they seem like a room you may have to pass through multiple times. *Melons, Pumpkins, and food-type items are your friend. These can be sucked up (not like that, you pervert!) and then launched with the L-button. They will then explode into a bunch of hearts so do this if you need healing. *Get into the habit of using the Darklight a LOT. This is very, VERY important in Rush Mode, and less important in other modes. This is because there is a lot of invisible furniture everywhere, and lots of items in those pieces of furniture. More often than not, invisible furniture has better goodies than already-visible furniture, and fewer traps. *Pay attention to teammates spamming "HELP" if they're in a dark room. They may be caught in a trap, unable to move or help out until they are freed by another teammate. This is especially vital if you are playing Rush Mode, but not so much if the teammate is in the exit hatch room of Rush Mode (more on this in its appropriate section). *Kill leeching is something which raises the ire of other players, but don't worry about it too much. It's far more important to pass each level and survive with more HP than worry about who gets how many ghosts. -The only impact your ranking has is who gets the most W at the end of the match. This affects who gets first, second, third, and fourth place, but in reality, placement is irrelevant. Sure, first place will get more gold to bring home to the Vault than second, but compare the amount you get from a single stage in the 1-player campaign. You'll notice that you can get far more gold in a fraction of the time in the 1-player campaign. *Small critters and homing bots are not really your friend. At least, they aren't nearly as much of a friend as other things you'll find. All of these things can be easily defeated with the flashlight, although homing bots will activate and try to ram into you and explode, causing pain and damage. -Critters such as spiders, bats, and mice usually leave a coin or dollar bill, which contribute to your next upgrade. -The red homing bots give you nothing. -Anything gold should be flashed immediately. (Stop thinking like that, pervert!). -The gold homing bots are usually the best, as they leave two-to-three gold bars, but are difficult to avoid until you learn how they move. Get the timing down, however, and you'll see these things as an easy 40G-60G. You'll want to flash them the moment you see them (too much innuendo...). ***************************************************************************** *******************************4) Hunter Mode******************************** ***************************************************************************** This section contains tips specific to the Hunter Mode of play not otherwise found in the Basics and General Tips sections. *Hunter Mode is all about combat. Any ghost left, err, alive must be dealt with. It's also a good "training" mode for any other mode, as you'll become more skilled in defeating ghosts while not being defeated, yourself. *In this mode, search for any dark rooms on your map, and don't stop searching hem until every last ghost has been defeated. Ghost hiding places are more obvious in this mode, represented by shaking furniture. Sometimes you won't even have to search furniture as they'll already be there. *Keys and locked doors are also found in this mode. Red doors, as shown on the map, require that you have a key before you can open them. If a room has a key in it, it'll also show on the map, although these rooms usually require an extensive nook and cavity search (don't look at me like that!), or you have to defeat the ghosts in the room. If it's the latter, you're already one step closer to achieving your goal. -If you get a key, waste no effort in opening locked doors, as you don't want to waste time dropping the key due to damage and hindering the progress of your team. Also, DON'T hold B when you pick up a key as people tend to scramble to get the key. You don't want them to bowl you over when you pick up the key. -It helps to keep an eye on your map for any rooms which might be off to the side and aren't connected to any other room. Some floors have doors which can be opened but can be accessed by going around through another connecting room. Make it a priority to first open doors which are on the sides of the map and have no green doors adjacent to them, as the key is the only way to get into those rooms. *You can also play a little "pass the baton" game with keys. Should you bump into someone who is carrying a key, you have a better chance of colliding with them and causing them to drop it. Ghost damage can cause key-holders to drop their keys as well, don't try to get hit by anything if you have a key. -Use this to your advantage. If one of your teammates is holding a key and is completely brain-dead, try bumping into them and taking their key. Quite often, the last room you need to clear is beyond a locked door, so be a rude dude for the greater good. :) -Alternately, you can fire spiked balls or rocks at them if they're trying to hassle you. Not everyone online is a good sport and might try to make you lose by preventing you from entering the one room you need to enter. This is the ONLY time I'd recommend doing this, because you're being a jerk to a jerk. *Ghosts are stronger and spawn in greater number here, especially on harder difficulty levels. Expect to get swarmed often as you start step up in difficulty. ***************************************************************************** ********************************5) Rush Mode********************************* ***************************************************************************** This section contains tips specific to the Rush Mode of play not otherwise found in the Basics and General Tips sections. *Rush Mode is a bit different than the other modes. You start with a mere 30 seconds and must find the exit hatch to proceed to higher levels. All players on the team must stand on a pressure plate next to the exit hatch to advance to the next level. You can also find Timepieces to increase the time you have by 10 seconds a Piece. (Oh-ho, such wit!) *Contrary to what first impressions may lead you to believe, you have plenty of time. The best way to play this Mode is to NOT run around like a chicken with its head cut off (although this is Luigi we're talking about...). A very basic concept that many players fail to grasp is that this is NOT a sprint-to-the-finish-line type of game. Instead, it's a mode of play which requires you to think on your feet. -Also, it's irrelevant who collects the Timepieces. There is no prize for whoever collects the most Timepieces, so be as greedy as you want. *One important, extremely critical thing to know is that if you find the exit hatch, DO NOT STOP MOVING. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT sit around and spam dialogue messages such "Over Here," "Hey,", "Help," or anything else for that matter, in order to bring the rest of the team to you. If you are one of these players, you are being useless to the rest of your team. Instead, search the room for Timepieces, coins, hunt ghosts, open doors to nearby rooms which haven't yet been mapped out, and the like. *However, if you are hit by a trap, you DO want to spam "Help" a lot. It's good to know the difference between when someone is being useless and when someone needs help. You can usually tell because a person being useless is usually in an already-lit room, and a person needing help will always be in a dark room. Traps ALWAYS cause more ghosts to spawn. -Rug Traps and Urn Traps are the worst as you can't move or can't act. If you're stuck in a Rug Trap, you can still defend yourself by fighting ghosts and use the Darklight, but can't move. If you're caught in an Urn Trap, you can move and avoid damage (with difficulty), but can't do anything else (including opening doors). -Curse traps are also pretty bad as they reverse your controls, making it difficult to get from Point A to Point B. They're not the worst of the bunch but they're still annoying, and can royally kick your butt if you're surrounded by a swarm of ghosts. Curses can be dispelled by another teammate's Darklight, so if you see someone else that's cursed, flash them with your Darklight. (Hey, I'm not that kinda Luigi!) *Gobbers and Creepers (both ghosts) are also an unwelcome sight. -Gobbers are those big, fat, yellow ghosts which puke everywhere. Their puke can block doors, which prevents you from reaching the exit hatch or backtracking during Red Coin Scramble. Gobbers tend to show up when you're the only person in the room and block you from entering one door (unfortunately, it's usually the only door). -If you're alone in a dark room but see no ghosts, try walking up to the doors and see if one shows up. These guys are best defeated by NOT wiggling the slide pad. Instead, maintain a connection and walk slowly around them until they spew their spew at you, then press A one it passes harmlessly to the side of you. -Creepers grab/absorb you, slowing you down for a few moments and do minor damage (but you can break out by mashing buttons). Try to spot them early, as they start off as a purple puddle in the middle of the floor (so vacuum that first to make them vulnerable). They tend to position themselves close to doors to catch unwary prey running around without looking where they're going. Turning up the brightness on your 3DS helps spot them. *Due to the restrictive time limit, you'll want to search objects as often as possible for Timepieces. Collect these often and search furniture often, but leave the large, blue, empty, Luigi-sized urns alone because they could be a trap. *Use the Darklight as often as possible. Always search for invisible pieces of furniture as they frequently contains Timepieces and other beneficial items (like hearts or gold critters). Unlike the previous tip, if you find one of those trap urns with the Darklight, DO search it. THESE urns, which started off being invisible, typically aren't traps. -Invisible furniture is most often found in the corners of the room, although it sometimes appears in the center of the room as well. Make sure to shine your Darklight in all corners of darkened and lit rooms as you proceed through each floor! *As with the time limit, Gold is also in short supply. Fortunately, you can increase the time, and therefore, increase the Gold you get. -Remember, you want to spend some time getting Gold on each floor, as you'll want to get as many upgrades as soon as possible. It helps, trust me, especially on Expert Mode, mid-bosses, and top-floor boss ghosts. -You don't want to worry about getting your butt kicked on higher floors when stronger ghosts start showing up, especially when you're playing on higher difficulty levels. -You should stop searching for gold and head for the exit if all the rooms on the floor have been lit up. Ghosts are the most reliable source of gold, but keep searching objects while you hunt down ghosts. You can also search the safer objects (ex. not urns) along the way if they're right in front of you if you're short on time (less than one minute). -As they say, a little preparation goes a long way (in your case, up). *Not all furniture is created equal. Some furniture seems to have a better chance of containing a Timepiece. The ones I've noticed which most frequently contain Timepieces are grandfather clocks (obviously), red plants, coffins, vases WITH plants, small tables with small vases, chests, paintings, bathtubs, and toilets (oddly enough). I should mention that you need to vacuum the red plants in order to search them. ***************************************************************************** ******************************6) Polterpup Mode****************************** ***************************************************************************** This section contains tips specific to the Polterpup Mode of play not otherwise found in the Basics and General Tips sections. *Just in case you're wondering, the 1-player mission which acts as a tutorial for catching Polterpups is B-6. You can play Polterpup Mode as soon as you unlock Scarescraper (in A-4), but you don't actually get to fight Polterpups in the main game until much later. *Polterpup Mode has two phases and both rely on your Darklight. In phase one, you must first find an invisible dog house somewhere on the floor. In phase two, you must hunt down and catch all Polterpups on the floor. Once all Polterpups have been captured, you are victorious and can move on to the next floor (after a Red Coin Scramble, of course). *Just like in Hunter Mode, you have five minutes to complete each floor and there are locked doors which require keys to open. Keys are often found in invisible furniture so you might find them a bit easier, since you'll already be using the Darklight regularly to find Polterpups. Keys also show on the map, but if you have acquired the map or have found a Polterpup, the Key icon on the map will be replaced by a Polterpup icon. *During the first phase of each floor, you must find a Polterpup doghouse and reveal it with the Darklight. The doghouse is usually in a room close to your starting point, but it will occasionally be far away. You can find it by following paw prints and see where they converge. Paw prints also can only be seen with the Darklight or X-Ray Glasses. *Once you've revealed the doghouse, a number of Polterpups will run away and hide in various objects. You will also be notified how many Polterpups there are, as shown on the side of you map. You are now in phase two and have to play a game of hide-and-seek, where you need to search various objects until you find their hiding places. Use the Darklight to follow more paw print tracks, as they'll lead you to their hiding places. *When you successfully find a Polterpup, you need to be quick on the draw with your Flashlight in order to stun it and capture it (just like any other ghost). Polterpups are pretty strong and will probably pull you all around the room. Make sure to dodge attacks from other things with the B button and avoid letting them pull you to the edges of the room. If they go beyond the wall, your connection will break and you'll have to find them again (but the damage you did will remain, thankfully). -Polterpups can heal if they're left alone for too long. Make sure you quickly track down any Polterpups that get away. *Polterpups seem to love hiding in invisible and/or furniture which contains traps. Oftentimes, you'll find one and get cursed, or will spawn ghosts at the same time you find their hiding spot. Always try not to let the Polterpups get away, but when the dust settles after finding one, make sure to heal cursed party members with your Darklight and clear out any excess ghosts that get in your way. Five minutes is usually more than enough time in most cases. *Speaking of other ghosts, they usually come in short supply. While it's good that they won't often be in your way of hunting down Polterpups, this also means that Gold (and upgrades) will be a scarce commodity in this mode. *When ghost do show up, try for multi-kills to increase the Gold reward for defeating these ghosts. Sometimes, when finding a Polterpup, you might spawn a whole swarm of ghosts, but this can be a real hindrance and could cost you the game if you spend too much time fighting them. *There are two different kinds of Polterpups: Polterpups (ohmygosh!) and Big Polterpups. The only real difference between the two is that Big Polterpups have more HP (I believe it's always twice as much). Both kinds have separate entries in the Vault, so I thought it was worth mentioning. *From my experience, it seems that swarms of ghosts appear more often on the floor before a boss ghost. Therefore, you might want to forgo taking down ghosts on these floors, as the Polterpups will often spawn ghosts and quickly run away. *It might be wise to pair up with a teammate because Polterpups (especially the big ones) can get away from you. If they cross into another room, you'll have to find them again, so you'll want to pick one of your teammates and stick with him. Two Luigis are stronger than one, and they can suck those mutts faster than one (and can keep them from getting away more easily). *Another reason to pair up with another person that Polterpups will sometimes knock you on the floor when you find them, giving them a free ticket to escape. If you have another person with you, he can at least get the stun off and maybe start suctioning the Polterpup for when you're back on your feet. Remember, Scarescraper is co-op on all modes! ***************************************************************************** ******************************7) Special Ghosts****************************** ***************************************************************************** Scarescraper Online Play adds something else to spice things up. It has special ghosts which cannot be obtained in the 1-player campaign. This means that if you want to have a 100% complete Vault, you'll have to play online to obtain these special ghosts. There are 48 ghosts total (or possibly more, but that's currently all the empty slots I see right now). This section is staring to fill up, but is still incomplete. In previous version of this guide, I had strategies for each ghost. After playing enough of Scarescraper Mode, I've noticed that ghosts of the same type all fight the same. So instead, I replaced my "Notes" with a brief description on their "Appearance" instead. Since each boss ghost of the same type, I'll give strategies right here instead, at the top of this section. Note that bosses appear every five floors and on boss floor, you must first spawn the boss by inspecting shaking furniture. All bosses floors have a five minute time limit, and any boss floor which is not the top floor has four rooms. A red coin will appear in each of these four rooms of Red Coin Scramble, so be a good sport and only take one of each red coin (unless you're not playing with a full team). All bosses will also spawn swarms of ghosts throughout the fight, and will often have shockwave abilities which will knock down all players, breaking your vacuum's connection. It's best to split your team into two groups: one to fight the normal ghosts (farming gold while preventing overall damage) and one to attack the boss. First and foremost, Polterpups are not boss ghosts, but the required ghosts that you need to catch in Polterpup Mode (and only appear here). Refer to the Polterpup section above for strategies on them. Secondly, The Brain is the boss ghost at the top floor of any Scarescraper, and (obviously) doesn't appear in Endless Mode. During this fight, you first have to spawn him, and then find and fight him like any other Poltergeist found in the 1-player mode. He'll roam about the arena completely invisible, so charge up your flashlight and try to cover a wide area with the burst until you find him. Then attack like normal. He'll also toss objects at you, so use your B button dodge ability often. If he looks like he's charging up a shockwave, quickly use any A button charges to stagger him. Greenie bosses always carry bombs and come in pairs. You'll first have to strip the bombs from their hands before stunning them with your flashlight. Slammer bosses have damage shields and spawn flies throughout the fight, so farm those upgrades early to quickly break their shields. Sneaker bosses also come in pairs and spawn teleporters in the room. If you pass over these teleporters, you'll be taken to a different room, so dodge them with the B button. Creeper bosses typically appear in narrow rooms and spawn lots and lots of ghosts (particularly, normal Creepers). You'll want at least half your team on the normal ghosts so you aren't overwhelmed. Gobber bosses spew normal Creepers and spew up more slime slicks than normal Gobbers. They're the same otherwise. *****Page 1: The Gold Ghost Page***** ___________________________________________________________________________

This is because you'll need the Darklight while playing online, and you don't get it until that mission. *****Modes***** -Surprise: Complete a Scarescraper of any difficulty and height on each mode of play (Hunter, Rush, and Polterpup) to unlock this. During Surprise Mode, each floor can randomly be one of the three main modes (just listed). This mode will be unlocked the next time you try to create a room, but you can still play in other peoples' Surprise Mode Scarescrapers before unlocking it. -Endless: Complete a 25F Scarescraper on any mode and you will unlock this mode for THAT TYPE ONLY. So if you beat a 25F Hunter Mode Scarescraper, you can create Endless Hunter Mode Scarescrapers but not Rush, etc, until you also beat a 25F Scarescraper on those modes as well. This mode will be unlocked the next time you try to create a room, but you can still play in other peoples' Endless Mode Scarescrapers before unlocking it. They also have their own unchangeable difficulty setting. *****Upgrades***** -These are the various Upgrades you can obtain for Scarescraper Mode.
