Credits ========================================================================== [1] CONTROLS ========================================================================== You couldn't find simpler controls in a game. It's a pity the rest is so bad. You will see how each button has been listed with 2 very distinct options. This is because the game can actually be broken down into 2 different genres: - A typical platformer where you control Seiya and need to explore a level while punching everybody you see. - A RPG-ish part which arises when you meet a boss. More on that in the Game Mechanics section. A - Jump (Platform) Confirm choice (Boss) B - Punch (Platform) Cancel choice (Boss) START - Pause game (only during platform part) SELECT - Menu (during platform part) Scan* (Boss) Left - Walk left (Platform) Decrease gauges (Boss) Right - Walk right (Platform) Increase gauges (Boss) Up/Down - Toggle between gauges (Boss) *Allows you to obtain the data of your opponent. ========================================================================== [2] GAME MECHANICS ========================================================================== Pressing SELECT anytime during the platform part will bring you to a menu with 4 choices. It is not really necessary to provide translations here, just putting the meaning of each option should suffice. Moreover, please note that this menu becomes accessible only after you get the Bronze Pegasus Cloth. _____________________________________________ | | | CLOTH STATUS DESTINATION PASSWORD | |_____________________________________________| CLOTH - Allows you to take off/put on your cloth. Putting it on costs some Cosmo. STATUS - Self-explanatory. See next section. DESTINATION - Allows you to select a destination from a list. This option cannot always be accessed. This depends on your current location. PAASWORD - Choosing this last option will display a password which can be used to continue the game. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Saint Seiya uses a status system that can be downright irritating if you don't take the time to get used to it. In addition, you need to be at ease with it since it plays a preponderant part during the boss battles. This STATUS screen can be seen by choosing it in the menu brought by pressing SELECT during the action part. Thankfully, most of the status screen is in English. |¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| | COSMO | xx | |--------------|---------| | DAMAGE | xx | |--------------|---------| | EX | xx | |--------------|---------| | APow xx | xx | | | | | MPow xx | xx | | | | | DPow xx | xx | | | | | HPow xx | xx | |--------------|---------| | AS xx | xx | | | | | JP xx | xx | | | | | CP xx | xx | |______________|_________| 'xx' just represents values. Obviously, these rise as you become stronger and progess in the game. COSMO - Your current Cosmo. DAMAGE - Your health points. Once this reaches 0, you die. EX - Experience points. APow - Attacking Power; used in boss battles. MPow - Magical Power; used in boss battles. DPow - Defensive Power; used in boss battles. HPow - Is somehow linked with Cosmo; used in boss battles. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As mentioned earlier, boss battles (against other Saints) take place in a RPG-ish way. This time, as in the first menu, the options are in Japanese. It's relatively easy to figure them out though. This menu will be at the top of your screen. ______________________________________________ | | | ATTACK ESCAPE TALK CHANGE CHARACER | |______________________________________________| ATTACK - See next section for full explanation as to how it works. ESCAPE - Allows you to avoid fighting the current opponent. This option is (obviously) not always available. TALK - Allows you to talk to the opponent. This will cause you to earn some Cosmo and Exp. I consider this a waste of time though, specially since I don't understand Japanese and never know what they're talking about (they're probably just shouting generic stuff though). CHANGE CHARACTER - Provided you do have other Saints in your line-up, choose this to give Seiya a break and to replace him with someone else. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you choose to attack, you then use the bottom menu which lists your APow, MPow, DPow and HPow, along with your EXP and COSMO. First, you need to fill the 4 gauges by highlighting each one and pressing the right directional button as much as desired. Once you are done, confirm your choices and 2 options will appear at the top. The first one is Punch and the second is Kick. You can now choose how you wish to attack. More often than not, your opponent will be more vulnerable to a certain type of attack and this may even change throughout the battle. Of course, you can't just constantly fill all your gauges up and keep whipping out Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken's indefinitely. This is where COSMO comes into play. For each attack you make, your COSMO decreases. Once it reaches 0, you'll have to resort to mere punches and kicks instead before you can use your special moves again. You can also talk to your opponent to recover some COSMO, as I already stated before. When your opponent attacks, another 2 options appear. The first one is Defend while the second is Avoid. Defend has greater chances of working but you'll still lose some life (at most 10 points -- this depends on your amount of Exp). Avoid works a lot less (I'll even say it is quite rare, but you won't lose any life if it works -- again, this option has greater chances of working if you have a ****-load amount of Exp). Pressing SELECT during a boss battle will allow you to 'scan' your opponent. Note however that this will cost some COSMO. Putting your cloth on also costs some COSMO. ========================================================================== [3] WALKTHROUGH ========================================================================== Note: The walkthrough has been broken down into 'chapters' for convenient browsing. Names of said chapters have been added according to what events occur during them and based on my (extensive) knowledge of Saint Seiya. Warning: The walkthrough contains spoilers. This can't be helped. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAGITTARIUS? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon starting the game, you will first see a menu containing numbers. This prompts you to enter your date of birth in a YEAR/MONTH/DATE format. Once you do so (and as long as you don't enter bull in it), the game will display your astrological sign. The system used here is the real one, so there is no need for me to give a complete list of what period yields what sign. If you really don't know, open a newspaper. Use the directional buttons to browse the lists, and confirm your choices with the A button. This part of the game (i.e. entering your date of birth) doesn't really play a role in the game. It's here to give it more appeal, something which this title definitely lacks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE QUEST FOR THE BRONZE PEGASUS CLOTH -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Right off the bat, you learn that you are still in the Sanctuary and that the time has come to use all your years of training to obtain the Bronze Pegasus Cloth. However, you first need to beat your tutor, Marine, before she'll let you challenge bulky Cassios for the cloth. Walk to the right until you see her. She will be giving you tips throughout the battle. Defeating Marine is as easy as inserting the cartridge into your NES, but I however advise you to lose a couple of times. This will allow you to gain levels and you'll probably need them against Cassios. Don't worry, you don't really lose if Marin defeats you. You'll merely end up in a room and just have to talk to her again to start the fight one more time. Whatever your choice, it's now Cassios-whipping time. If you did as I said, you shouldn't have any problem beating him. After the battle, the Pope will ramble on about the Saints before letting you claim the cloth. You have now accomplished the most important! Or so you think... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE TOURNAMENT -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After obtaining the cloth, use Destination in the menu and choose the third option, which is Saori's house. Once in the mansion, go right and enter the third room. Saori will be inside. Talk to her and exit the house. Use the Destination option again and this time, opt for the second choice. You'll end up in near Miho's house. Talk to her and she will grant you more Cosmo after commenting about how strong you've become. It is now time to fight the other Bronze Saints, as seen in the first episodes of the anime. The fourth choice in the Destination menu will take you directly to the Coliseum where Dragon Shiryu will be waiting for you. Obviously, put on your Cloth first since you don't want to end up bruised for life. After beating Shiryu, you will face Swan Hyoga and Andromeda Shun consecutively. Once you manage to defeat Shun, Phoenix Ikki will barge in and will steal the Gold Sagittarius Cloth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SEARCH FOR THE SAGITTARIUS CLOTH -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You now need to find the different parts of the Sagittarius Cloth. Thankfully, you are no longer alone. You can now also rely on Shiryu, Hyoga and Shun. Exit the Coliseum, walk to the right until you find the first Black Saint. He's a breeze; with the Exp accumulated against the other Bronze Saints, you'll easily defeat him. Doing so will allow you to obtain the Arm and Leg parts of the Sagittarius Cloth. From here, you can either go to see Saori again for more Cosmo or you can go directly to Mt. Fuji to beat the crap out of the other Black Saints. To get to Mt. Fuji, use the menu again and pick the first location after choosing the Destination option. Once you arrive there, keep walking to the right until you see a cave. Enter it. Proceed right again until you see a second opening. Go through it but this time, head left until you eventually meet up with the Black Dragon. Defeat him to obtain the Chest part of the Gold Cloth. After defeating the Black Dragon, head back to the opening and exit. From here, head to the right. At one point, you will fall into a gap. Do not try to jump over it as you do need to fall down. Once you reach the bottom of the pit, walk to the left and you'll see Black Pegasus cracking his knuckles. Defeat him for the Waist Part. You now need to find Phoenix Ikki since he has the remaining parts with him. Go back to the beginning of Mt. Fuji and this time, head to the right, past the openings. Eventually, you will encounter Ikki who, ravaged by his trip to Death Queen Island, is intent on killing all the Bronze Saints. Show him what you are made of and you'll obtain the remaining parts of the Sagittarius Cloth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- SANCTUARY I: SILVER -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that your quest is supposedly over, go back to Kido Mansion. After entering it, go left and into the second room. Exit it through the other door, enter the next door (the one to near the statue). Talk to Saori who will congratulate you on your job. Next, go to Seiya's house and approach the drawer until some dialogues pop up (you may need to press the A button for this). After you do see the dialogues, head back to the park and jump up the trees until you see Docrates perched on a branch. Defeat him and return to Kido Mansion. Talk to the guy by the door and get out again. For reasons unknown to everybody, Shiryu will be standing near a building when he should instead be engulfed inside Seiya as in any RPG. Since he's out, talk to him and he'll give you certain hints about what is going on at the Sanctuary. Backtrack and talk to the guy in Kido Mansion again. Take the corridor to the left and enter the second door (basically what you did on your previous visit). However, this time, instead of going through the door by the statue, head to the left and open the next door you see. You'll be in a room with blue carpet and gray walls. There will also be 3 lamps on the back wall. Stand exactly under the left-most one and press Up on the directional pad to go through a hidden door. Keep going up and Kido will suddenly appear. Yes folks, the old is actually still alive and he looks scarier now that he hasn't seen the light of day for so many years. Talk to him to gain more Cosmo. Exit Kido Mansion and head to the Coliseum next. Docrates will be there and he's keen on avenging his defeat and his brother's (Cassios) humiliation. Defeat him once more and head out. Explore the city and beat the 3 Silver Saints (Charioteer Cappella, Cerberus Dante and Lizard Misty). Return to the Coliseum and take care of Centaurus Babel. You now have to exit the town and head to the forest. Jump up the ledges until you see Raven Jamian who, you'll have guessed it, you need to beat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- SANCTUARY II: GOLD -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go back to Kido Mansion and speak to Saori yet again. After doing so, exit the house and you'll find out that Leo Aiolia has come to claim his brother's famous cloth. It figures he wants to wear it now, but Seiya has other plans. So, you have no other choice but to defeat him. After taking care of Aiolia, choose the first option in the Destination menu to go to the Sanctuary. You will however need to fight Shaina early on. Shaina is way easier than Aiolia; if you managed to defeat him in one try, you shouldn't waste too much time with Shaina. Proceed to the right until you reach Marin's quarters. Go in, approach the bookshelf and press the A button to trigger some dialogues. Leave the house, continue walking to the right, and you will eventually meet up with the huge Cassios again. He's no stronger than before, so beat him to a pulp and proceed to the right. On the way, you will probably notice openings. If you go through them, you will see statues of Princess Athena; touching them will give you back some Cosmo. Use these to replenish your Cosmo as some tough battles await you further on. Next, go up and you will need to fight against Lizard Misty again. Keep going up and defeat Centaurus Babel once more. Continue jumping up the ledges and defeat Whale Moses. You now need to search for Docrates who is to the right. Head towards him, defeat him too, and head back down where Grey Hound Asterion will be waiting for you. Fight against him amidst puddles of blood and when you finally beat him, head to the right to talk to Marine. She will give you Athena's Shield. With Athena's Shield in your inventory, walk a bit to the right and Hunter's Hound Argor will show up. Beat the crap out of him and this chapter will end. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RACE AGAINST TIME -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This part is extremely straight-forward. Head towards the Gold Saints' Temples and you will need to defeat Taurus Aldebaran, Gemini Saga, Cancer Death Mask, Scorpio Miro and Virgo Shaka (in that order). As you go to the next temple, you'll find that Gemini Saga apparently didn't get enough the previous time as he'll be waiting for you. Beat him one more time and you will be able to enter the palace. Once inside, walk to the right until you reach a stairway. Go up and once you are on the upper ledge, just jump. If you did everything right, you'll suddenly find yourself next to the Pope. Defeat the Pope and when he lets out his last cry of agony, head to the left. Talk to Athena, watch the ending and breathe in relief as you realize you actually completed this crappy game. ========================================================================== [4] REVISION HISTORY ========================================================================== v 1 - December 2, 2002 Guide finally complete. Possible first release. v 2 - December 4, 2002 Corrected a few minor mistakes. Forgot to list Scorpio Miro as one of the Gold Saints encountered at the Sanctuary. v 3.X - December 23, 2002 Fixed a few loose sections. The probability that this guide will ever be updated as from now is 0.0001% (hence the X). ========================================================================== [5] OUTRO ========================================================================== This FAQ has already reached completion. No new sections will be added although the guide will still be updated for corrections and if anything noteworthy comes up (this isn't very likely though). Otherwise, I'd like to reiterate my criticism about this game. If you can spare the trauma of playing this game, do so. Seitoushi Saint Paradise on the GameBoy is a billion times better than this (and its prequel). ========================================================================== [6] CREDITS ========================================================================== ~ Kuramada, Masami for creating Saint Seiya. ~ I would also like to advance my middle finger towards Bandai for this pathetic attempt at making a video game out of Saint Seiya.
