Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 1.6 Dates Written: January 15th to January 16th, 2003 I dedicate this to anyone who is unskilled enough to require an FAQ for this unbelievably simplistic and somewhat moronic game. Keep in mind I used to play this quite a bit, so I do not hate this game. Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on 16th of January, 2003 ----------- Version 1.2 ----------- -Submitted guide on 20th of March, 2003 -Changed the format of the guide slightly -Added information on "winning" the game ----------- Version 1.3 ----------- -Submitted guide on 22nd of November, 2003 -Tweaked the format a little ----------- Version 1.5 ----------- -Submitted guide on 15th of July, 2004 -Altered format to make the FAQ flow better and easier to read ----------- Version 1.6 ----------- -Submitted guide on 30th of October, 2005 -I added in Retronintendo and Honestgamers as sites allowed to use my FAQs -Altered the format to make it easier on the eyes of the reader ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Table Of Contents----------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Using Moves Effectively 4) Stamina 5) The Interference 6) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Introduction--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Welcome to the toughest brawler to ever come out on the NES. Well, it was the toughest fighter released in the 1980's at least, right? Well, ok, it had to be the GREATEST street fighting game released in 1984! In this game, you are a street tough who is out to prove that you have the toughness to knock any opponent out. You begin with three "lives" in reserve, which means when you lose your third scuffle (a single round of fighting), your game ends. You can tell when you or an opponent is close to stopping their fighting ways because of the open sewer (where a vanquished street tough is tumbled into). Keep going till your body can not fight any longer. Such is the call of the street! However, to truly be considered the Urban Champion, you must get the Round Counter to total 99. From this point on, you will be the true Urban Champion due to the Round Counter never surpassing the number ninety-nine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Controls------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will go over what the controls do for you in the fights on the street. D-Pad : UP and DOWN control where your fighter will throw his punch (high or low) and block incoming punches (high and low). LEFT and RIGHT will walk your character in the corresponding direction pressed. LEFT and RIGHT will also allow your character to lean back to avoid punches when engaged with your opponent. SELECT : Moves cursor between One Player/Two Players on the starting screen. START : Confirms starting screen selection, and it will also pause/unpause the game. B Button: This throws a heavy punch, but this punch takes a little longer to throw. A Button: This throws a light punch, but this punch is quite fast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------Using Moves Effectively----------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will discuss the moves listed above, and when they are the most effective move to use. o----------o | Punching | o----------o a) Punches can be thrown both high and low. High punches require that the player has pressed UP before they throw the punch. Low punches require that the player has pressed DOWN before they throw a punch. b) The player will continue to throw punches at the high or low until they change it to the other. This can be used to confuse your human opponent when you are separated as you can toggle back and forth rapidly to not let them know whether you will throw high or low. c) Light Punches will fly out of your wind up fast, but they do little damage. These quick jabs are useful however, when you opponent is just trying to throw Heavy Punch after Heavy Punch in your direction. By rapidly peppering them, you will not only halt their haymakers in mid-flight, but you will also steadily deplete their Stamina as you back them closer to knocking them off the screen (removing one of their lives). d) Heavy Punches are devastatingly powerful (one hit will send an opponent tumbling), but they are also devastatingly slow as well. These punches are best used to catch an opponent on the chin just as they are stepping into range. They are also quite useful for after you block an opponent's punch (your opponent is not able to move momentarily after the block), and this will often be your preferred method of hitting your opponent with these haymakers. o------------------o | Blocking/Dodging | o------------------o a) Blocks can be done both high and low. High Blocks will stop any High Punch headed you way, and it is done by pressing UP before that High Punch lands. Low Blocks will stop any Low Punch headed you way, and it is done by pressing DOWN before that Low Punch lands. b) Dodging is accomplished when the two fighters are close to one another, and just as your opponent starts to punch, you have to tap the same direction as you are on the screen. If you are on the left side, tap LEFT. If you are on the right side, tap RIGHT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------Stamina--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will look into what stamina is, and how you go about losing stamina. o---------o | Stamina | o---------o This is the stuff that tells you how much "gas" is left in your fighter. If this runs out while you are brawling, you will be temporarily winded. Once you recover, you will still be extreme low on Stamina until one of you is knocked off the screen (this resets your total to 200 each). o-----------------o | Loss Of Stamina | o-----------------o a) Punching removes 1 Stamina from your total. b) A potted plant to the skull removes 5 Stamina from your total. c) A landed Light Punch removes 1 Stamina from your total. d) A landed Heavy Punch removes 9 stamina from your total, as it will send you rolling backwards. e) A backwards roll will remove 9 Stamina from your total. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------The Outside interference------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will look at the other beings and forces that tend to influence your battles against the other street scum like yourself. o------------------------o | The Apartment Dwellers | o------------------------o These people live in the neighbourhoods where the street brawlers get down and do their thing. It appears that these residents have had enough of the constant annoyances of swearing, violence, and public disturbances. They are going to fight back, and try to dissuade this behaviour from happening ever again! During a tussle, these people will often pop out of a window to see yet another fight, so they will be infuriated to the point of dropping a potted plant out the window! If this makes contact with a fighter's head (you or your opponent), you will be dazed, leaving a wide open chance for your opponent to land a heavy punch to your unprotected body. This effect wears off rather quickly, so deck your opponent at first opportunity when this occurs to score a free hit! o--------o | Police | o--------o Ah yes, the great equalizer in any street brawl anywhere in the world! You or your opponent could be one heavy punch away from knocking their opponent's teeth down the others throat as they roll off the screen, but both will immediately separate to walk to opposite ends of the sidewalk when the siren wail reaches them. Of course, being the brainless fighting idiots that they are, instead of just standing around looking normal, they will instead look off into the sky and whistle (a dead giveaway of guilt), which just screams, "We broke the law! Arrest us!". Anyway, once the clueless men in blue finish touring through the screen, the fight will resume, so run back into the middle of the war zone to wallop your opponent upside the head once more to set-up that bloody chiclet smear you were aiming for earlier! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Final Word--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P. Street Fighter this ain't! Still, it can be somewhat fun if you decide to play another human who is willingly playing it themselves (no forcing them to play). It still has some cool little features that were advanced for a game released in 1984, but it is one to play once or twice before moving to something new. A game that has not aged gracefully as many other NES titles have managed to do. However, read the next paragraph before you start writing viscious e-mails to hear my thoughts on why I have this opinion. I hope you do not take my relative dislike of this game as a knock because it truly is not. Play it, have some fun, beat on your friends a little bit, but do not get too wrapped up in it as it is more of an occasional play at best.
