atomicules UnDeRgRoUnD > Articles > Never Give Up --- Never Give Up ------------------------------------------------- No, not in the sense of continually striving, fuck that - give that up as soon as you'll be comfortable with the effort you've put in - I mean in the selfish sense: Never give anything up for anyone else. Ever. If you do, you very well might never get it back. So if your vice is smoking and people (loved ones) are on at you to "give up" and emotionally blackmailing you with bullshit like "do it for the kids, if not for me or yourself" then go straight outside and spark up. If you are doing anything that doesn't harm others and it gives you pleasure then no one has the right to ask you to give up. You've undoubtedly earnt the right to your moments of pleasure. Sometimes it can seem like the right thing to do, to quit the thing that gives you pleasure, because - let's face it - you don't _need_ to be doing whatever it is. And therefore, it is easy to fall into the trap of giving it up, perhaps with the pretence of it being a temporary measure, to help someone else out. But it is actually never the right thing to do. I'd suggest finding an alternative way of helping them out: Offering to do more of something else (that perhaps you don't like) instead of less of something you do like is more sensible. People can SEE you doing something and see you are doing something you don't enjoy and they'll know you are doing it for them. And they'll appreciate it. Conversely, if you are not doing something you do enjoy they won't see ANYTHING and they'll very quickly forget that you ever liked to do it at all. And that'll become the new status quo and things will move on and you will have to struggle and fight like mad to be allowed to get that pleasure back. It turns out that things are not actually conspicuous in their absence, rather it's like they never existed at all. ------------------------------------------------------------------- atomicules UnDeRgRoUnD gopher://gopher.atomicules.co.uk/ atomicules Overground URL:http://atomicules.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------- Powered by Floodgap's Bucktooth .
