Nethack is a dungeon crawl game that includes your
character, his faithful pet companion, some monsters and various other objects represented by a number of different text characters.
You can choose from a wide variety of different character archetypes, each with different strengths, but the goal is ultimately the same: kill as many monsters as possible; get as much treasure as you can, and plow your way deeper and deeper into the dungeon.
