A system of electronic servers of the
European Mathematical Society
March 17, 1995 final version.
At the meeting of the executive committee of the EMS (European
Mathematical Society) in Cortona/Italy, October 8/9, 1994, it was
decided to set up a system of electronic servers in Europe for
Mathematics under the auspices of the EMS.
There shall be a master server, and several
mirror servers throughout
Europe. At the site of the master server a group of editors including
working mathematicians is needed, which supervises this server from
the point of view of content.
The servers should be accessible by ftp, fsp (a sort of slow ftp for
bad connections, which restarts where the connection is brocken), gopher,
www (mosaic), hyperG, and also telnet.
FIZ-Karlsruhe, section in
Berlin, has offered to run the master
server, responsible contact person
Claus
Dieter Ziegler,
cdz@zblmath.FIZ-Karlsruhe.de.
At its meeting in Krakow, March 10-12, 1995 the Executive Committee
of the EMS decided unanimously that the master server should be set
up and maintained by FIZ-Karlsruhe, and the secretary P. Michor was
entitled to negotiate the conditions. The format of the server as
lined out below was also agreed apon.
It was decided to have mirror servers at various location, with a small
fee charged, divided between FIZ and EMS. This fee can be waived.
The content:
Mathematical services:
-
Electronic journals. One could collect here all (some) freely
available electronic journals in Europe, and also those from
elsewhere, which are willing to to be mirrored here.
Preliminary list:
-
Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie / Contributions to Algebra
and Geometry
- Acta Mathematica Universitatae Comenianae
- 3 french printed journals who will go electronic in 1995 (Jean
Cea, cea@unice.fr)
- 2 new french electronic journals (Jean Cea, cea@unice.fr, Eva
Bayer)
- Lothringian electronic journal of Combinatorics (Dominique
Foata, foata@math.u-strasbg.fr)
- Preliminary talks have also beed held with a Hungarian journal
(Publicationes Math. Debrecen), and contacts with the main
Polish journals via Jackowski are under way.
- The journal of the Finnish Academy of Sciences (Tuulikki
M\"akelainen)
-
Refereed conference proceedings.
The Les Houches conference 1994 (one of the most impostant
in theoretical physics) will not be printed anymore, it will
just be put on a subsection of the hep-th-server (address see
below). The conference `Differential Geometry and its
applications, Brno (CZ) 1995' has tentatively agreed to publish
their proceedings here.

Organizational Services:
-
Address list of personal members of EMS: The only way to get at
this is to login and start a search program, which to a name
forwards the address, one at time only. One should not be able to
download the whole file. If it is easily possible, this should be
accessible only to members of EMS.
-
List of all mathematical societies in Europe, including their
addresses.
-
List of forthcoming conferences in Europe and/or worldwide, with
contact addresses.
-
Openings and positions available (ordered by countries)
-
Articles of general interest for mathematicians, grouped into
subjects: Science policy, electronic publishing, etc.
-
Newsletter of the EMS. News about the EMS, its activities and
its committees.
-
Pointers to preprint ftp servers of single institutes.
-
Pointers to discussion fori of general interest.
-
European Congress of Mathematics (Budapest), registering.
The address of the server should be as simple as possible.
In Vienna the address of a mirror server will be `ems.ac.at'.
