The first European Congress of Mathematics was held in the Sorbonne
(Paris), July 6-10, 1992. It was organised by the Société Mathématique de
France (SMF) and the Société Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles
(SMAI) under the auspices of the European Mathematical Society.
There were about 1300 participants coming from 58 countries.
The founder of ECM1 is Max Karoubi (France). He was also the President of the Prize Committee.
