This is a alpha release of the source code of the
MBone VCR a Video Conference Recorder for the MBone.

The MBone VCR can record and playback RTP packets.
RTP is the Real Time Transport Protocol which provides
basic real-time media communication support and it is
used by a variaty of MBone applications. MBone VCR is
compatible with RTPv1, RTPv2 and the vat protocol (RTPv0).
(RTCP is not yet supported but will be included asap).
The MBone VCR will synchronize the packets based on information
in the RTP packets and recover the original timing during
playback. It supports sessions of virtually as many media
as one wants to specify.

The MBone VCR is a a highly distributed tool, it depends on
other applications to record data and it plays the data back
by sending it out to the network again. It does not display
any data itself so you might need to install some other
application to be able to fully use it.

For more information about the MBone and other MBone applications
see http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/mbone-vcr/mbone.html

To build vcr from source, simply run 'make' in
the top-level of the distribution directory.
Make will call ./src/configure (which was created
from configure.in by autoconf) to figure out your
configuration and create an apropriate directory
and Makefile for your environment. After this step
it will change to this directory and start compiling.
Therefore you can use the same distribution directory
for various platforms. (See 'make help' for details
about the toplevel Makefile options)

You'll need to have tcl/tk (>= v7.6/v4.2) installed
(or built in the directory above the vcr tree).
If you do not have tcl/tk you can get it from
ftp://ftp.cs.berkeley.edu/ucb/tcl/

For OSs that do not support multicast by default
you'll also need the corresponding multicast patches.

MBone VCR uses some classes from libg++, therefore
if you try to build the tool from source, you'll need
to have libg++ installed.

Supported platforms (using gcc >= 2.7.2) so far include:
Sparc   : SunOS 4.x
          Solaris 2.x
DEC/AXP : OSF/1 2.x
i486    : LinuX (>= Kernel v1.2.13)
RS6000  : AIX >= 4.1.4
SGI Indy: Irix 5.3

Please send any suggestions, comments, feedback, bug-reports,
bug-fixes, ports to other platforms, etc. to:

           mbone-vcr@icsi.berkeley.edu

I work on my Phd. at the University of Mannheim in Germany and
will continue working on the vcr besides my Phd (not fulltime
though). All email send to the above address will be forwarded
to me. Thank you for your cooperation,
