1. GUS GF1 patches
------------------

Note that I have a GUS PNP, don't know how much the standard patches
for this differ from those for the GUS max etc.

  1.1 propatches lite 1.5:
  ------------------------
Too much electric guitar like sounds, crispness compared to
original patches is gone. Too much volume difference in patches which
makes me reach a LOT for the volume control with eg. Descent/Duke3d.

With 'InstantX' the result is pretty ugly, and all in all,
only a certain type of rock music seems to benefit from the PPLT 1.5
over the standard patches that come with the GUS PNP. Zzunkown looses
all its dramatic edge for example and mission impossible simply sounds
bad.

Some patches also have a bit of noise.

2. GUS PNP Interwave patches
-----------------------------
I didn't have the AMD 4MB, I thought. The problem was the
install procedure which needs to correctly see the RAM you have (I
couldn't even reinstall the 5.6MB original patches). Due to a
unreparable mess on my DOS partition I had to reformat that so I
reinstalled everything and it went fine after a few tries. Selecting
the 4MB set worked! Ok, now see how good it sounds with the ultrasound
drivers.

  Other sets ?
  ------------
Any suggestions ?

3. OSS 3.8 instead of 3.5:
--------------------------
The midi init now says it is a GUS PNP (instead of a MAX) with
4MB (as that's what I've installed), but music is rather bad, with
strange pauses. Is it using the internal ROM with 1Mb patches ? Disk
activity is very much less, but no, when using PPLT 1.5 the midi's
sound different. I guess midi loading in IWAVE mode is just
smoother. This means I will have to try the ultrasound/alsa driver or
recompile the soundmodule for a GUS max.
Another problem with OSS 3.8 for my GUS PNP is that setting
the synth volume messes up midi playing (temporarily) which didn't
happen in 3.5.
Yet another problem with 3.8: opening both /dev/dsp and
/dev/sequencer doesn't work with my GUS PNP (resource busy for one if
the other is in use)..
	That's it. I had enough. 3.8 is gone. I use 3.5 again.

4. OPL3 patches
---------------
Are there any variants of the standard /etc/drums.o3 &
/etc/std.o3 ? (I used a SB 16 a long time ago and experimented a bit
and had two different files, for the drums and std. Improved versions?
Worth keeping both? I didn't examine them very closely.)
