HTTP-NG Testlab at PARC - Brief Description
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The testlab consists of the following computers:

    2 Sun Ultra 30 Model 250's
    (see http://www.sun.com/desktop/products/Ultra30/specs.html)
These have 248 MHz UltraSPARC-II processor, 128 Meg memory.
    and are running Solaris 2.6

    2 Compaq Deskpro 6000's.
    (see http://www.compaq.com/products/desktops/dp6000/6000.fea_ben.html)
These have 300 Mhz Pentium II processor, 64 Meg memory
and are running Windows NT Service Pack 3.

Connected to a:

    1 Xylan Omniswitch
    (see http://www.xylan.com/products/)
This is a Omni-3wx chassis with power supply, an MPM 1GW
processor module, and an ESM-100C-12W-2C Fast ethernet module.
This switch can be controlled via RS232 or SNMP.
It isolates the tests from normal traffic on our thickwire PARC net.

Setting Omniswitch interface characteristics
--------------------------------------------

1. Telnet to ngswitch, login as 'admin', with password 'switch'
(Note: use ? to see list of commands.)
2. Enter Interface
3. Enter 10/100
4. Enter 10/100vc to see the current configuration
5. Enter 10/100cfg to reconfigure
   e.g. to force slot/interface 3/2 to 10 mbits
     Enter Slot/Interface [<ret> to exit] : 3/2
     Autonegotiate [y, n, or (q)uit] (Currently enabled (y)) : n
     Line speed [100 or 10] (Currently (100)) : 10
Link Mode [Full, Half] (Currently (H)alf Duplex) : F
5. Enter 10/100vc to verify the current configuration
6. Enter exit to terminate the telnet session

ILU source RCS tree stamping
----------------------------

HTTP-NG related stamps to the ILU sources follow the form:

    ilu-Major-Minor-Level-nglab-Date

(Level indicates what the last public release was)

For example:

    ilu-2-0-alpha12-nglab-063098

This is our current sources ilu 2.0 alpha 12, intended
for use in the nglab, snapshot took place on July 30 1998.

Raw Test data
-------------

The Raw data from running a test 'Foo' using an ILU with stamp 'Bar'
should be placed in

    /project/http-ng/tests/Bar/Foo

Where the test Foo is described in the document

    /project/http-ng/docs/tests.txt

Raw data should consist of complete output of the client and server
programs for that test (including the command lines used to invoke
them), and should reside (ideally) in the files named client.log and
server.log.

Sun Machine (ngsun1 and ngsun2) Directories
-------------------------------------------

On ngsun1 and ngsun2, the http-ng related directories are:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/ilu/src/

Contains a copy of our ILU tree, i.e. our current sources, NOT the
CVS tree we share with w3c. Normally this tree is updated only
when our current sources are working properly, and have
been stamped appropriately. (This is ILUSRC)

The localconfig in this directory is setup to turn on compiler
optimizations, and uses the following options

    --enable-sunrpc-protocol
    --enable-tcp-support
    --disable-sunrpc-unix-auth
    --prefix=/opt/local/ilu
    --with-binding-dir=/opt/local/ilu/binding
    --with-x=/usr/openwin/include
    --disable-lisp-support
    --enable-python-support
    --disable-old-cplusplus-support
    --enable-http-protocol
    --enable-corba-iiop
    --enable-variant-support
    --enable-omg-idl-support
    --enable-direct-omg-idl-support
    --disable-java-support
    --enable-w3ng-protocol
    --enable-w3mux-transport
    --enable-kernel-shared-library
    --enable-c-shared-library
    --enable-cplusplus-shared-library

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/ilu/

Where ILU was installed, i.e. ILUHOME

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/ILUSRC/

Asymbolic link to our current sources, ../ilu/src

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/ngtesturls/

Contains various URL files to be used with the nggetbot program.
The file names in here (generally) follow the convention

    sitefiles_server_scheme_protocol_transport_tcpport.urls

For example, mscape_ngsun2_w3ng_w3ng_w3mux_2718.urls contains
urls for the microscape site being served on ngsun2, where the
urls are of the w3ng scheme, and are contacted using the w3ng
wire protocol, over the w3mux transport, running on top of
tcp port 2718

Where a port isn't specified, the default is whatever the
ngwebserver's default is.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/

Directory that contains the collections of files served out
(e.g. ngwebserver -filebase /opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs).

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/microscape/

The 'Microscape' site files

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/aol/
/opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/bu/
/opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/ms/

Surge generated site files for America Online, Boston University
and Microsoft sites respectively.

To generate the actual files, each directory contains symbolic
links to files and mout.txt in the corresponding Surge subdirectory.

e.g.
    files -> /opt/local/http-ng/surge_1.00/files
    mout.txt -> /opt/local/http-ng/surge_1.00/ms/mout.txt

For example, to generate the ms files (after running the Surge runsetup)

cd /opt/local/http-ng/serverdocs/ms
files

To subsequently run the Surge generator to produce a url file to fee to nggetbot

Surge -generator -nurls 10000 -outputfile /net/ngsun1/opt/local/http-ng/ngtesturls/aol_ngsun2_w3ng_w3ng_w3mux_2718.urls -clientargs "-server ngsun2"

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/surge_1.00/

CVS version of surge, but with subdirectories for aol, bu and ms
that contain the output files from runsetup with the particular
sites parameters. Symbolic links in each of these subirectories
point to the proper files for that site, allowing one to cd to that
subdirectory, and perform ../runsetup to generate the site specific files,
or to run the request generator.

For example,

in /opt/local/http-ng/surge_1.00/bu we have
    Surge -> ../Surge*
    Surgeclient -> ../Surgeclient*
    parameters.dat -> ../bu.dat

To generate the files for bu:

    cd /opt/local/http-ng/surge_1.00/bu
    ../runsetup

---------------------------------------------------------------------

/opt/local/http-ng/w3c-libwww-5.1m/

Contains libwww. Of particular interest is the libwww getbot in
/opt/local/http-ng/w3c-libwww-5.1m/bin/webbot

---------------------------------------------------------------------

(ngsun2 only)
/opt/local/http-ng/apache/

Contains the CVS version of the Apache1.2/ILU integration.
By default (specified in /opt/local/http-ng/apache/conf/httpd.conf)
it will serve native Apache on port 8080, and iluhttp.Resource on port 2719.

To run apache with native support only:
/opt/local/http-ng/apache/src/httpd -f /opt/local/http-ng/apache/conf/httpd.conf

To run apache with both native and iluhttp.Resource support:
/opt/local/http-ng/apache/src/httpngd -f /opt/local/http-ng/apache/conf/httpd.conf

---------------------------------------------------------------------
