 The last qualification in that email is typical of the unison release
 cycle. If you search GNATS you will see that nearly all upgrades of the
 unison port were preceded by similar considerations.
 
 Given that two months have passed since that statement, I would recommend
 going with a new unison-devel port. A lot of people are using unison
 for critical backup applications (I recall it is used for GNATS itself),
 and these upgrades are hard to perform on such systems. It also doesn't
 help that unison is not backward protocol compatible and the updates need
 to be coupled (this is an issue since the remote system might not be
 running freebsd, and many of the available linux packages are still
 2.9.X).
 
 We can take this discussion to ports@ if you like. My current
 recommendation is a new unison-devel port.
