You probably won't believe me, but... 

It looks like you need more memory.  You should have included information 
about total mem available,, and total free mem when it fails, but both 
jade is known to build (as of Mar. 21), and ``make release'' is known 
to work (as of 980322).  The malloc(): error: allocation failed refers 
to what I'm saying.  :)
