 the libraries would be enough to allow for precompiled packages to keep
 running and accessing their compatible client libraries.
 
 But of course you are correct. headers and binaries would need to live
 in different directories or have version info in their names like
 ldapsearch22. This of course would be perceived as ugly by many people.
 
 I for my part would be happy if at leat the shared libraries would change
 their major version number when the api changes.
