>Description:
With Gnome-1.4, it is no longer possible to start Linux X ports such as
WordPerfect, StarOffice, RealPlayer, Linux-Netscape, etc. from a menu.
Doing so results in a failure to start the application with various
errors that seem to indicate that the Linux ports are looking for a
Linux version of Xalf. /compat/linux does not provide such support,
and so these (and similar) applications refuse to start from a menu.

>How-To-Repeat:
Just attempt to start any Linux X port . . .

>Fix:

The work-around is to start Linux X ports from an xterm command prompt,
but this is ugly and sort of defeats the purpose of having X in the
first place. Bottom line, /compat/linux's X support needs to be
	updated!

I have a pr in gnats that does this, but nobody has attempted to help
me upgrade all 120 linux ports so it sits there and will continue
until I can get some helpers.

 better workaround:

disable the "Enable launch feedback" option in
 gnomecontrolcenter->Desktop->LaunchFeedback.

I noted this in my post "wierdness with xalf and linux-netscape..." on
 Mon, 04 Jun 2001.

Yes, that does it. But I believe getting Linux support updated would be
 a better fix.

You can fix this easily by going Control Center > Launch Feedback > [x]
"Do not distinguish between windows (compatibility mode)." I don't know
why this fixes the problem, exactly, but it does. (At least for I.)

 Erik.

The workaround works by disabling (completely) Xalf. With Xalf
disabled, no calls are made by Linux apps to (non-existant) Linux-Xalf
 libraries . . .

This PR can be closed. The x11/linux-xalf port, when installed, fixes
this PR on my system (I no longer need to run the native Xalf in
compatibility mode to allow linux-netscape to start--it starts fine now!)
