I've played a little with that:

 http://people.freebsd.org/~novel/misc/zmq_update.diff

Appears that some software doesn't play well with the new zmq, for
 example:

 http://www.bayofrum.net/tb/errors/9-novel/rubygem-zmq-2.1.4_1.log
 http://www.bayofrum.net/tb/errors/9-novel/mongrel2-1.7.5_1.log
 http://www.bayofrum.net/tb/errors/9-novel/blastbeat-20121205_2.log

Probably we should move the current version to zmq2 and switch the old
 ports to it.

Subject: Re: ports/183730: devel/zmq: Please update to latest version or at
 least 3.2.4
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2013 23:06:31 +1100

Hi Michael, thanks for your submission.

Note that 3.2.4 existed previous under zmq-devel, and has now been moved
to net/libzmq3 (along with some updates) to follow the creation of the
 new net/libzmq4 port

Port maintainers of software that depend on libzmq will need to select
the appropriate port based on version compatibility

Next step is to finalise the transition to the new naming convention by
moving devel/zmq to net/libzmq2, which will occur outside of the scope
 of this PR

 Enjoy!
