 I don't agree with Glenn Fowler's response:

"it must be a bsd bug since TAB[12] are in posix <termios.h>"

 http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/termios.h.html

If you search for TABDLY, TAB0, TAB1, TAB2 or TAB3, you'll see they are
XSI. As far as I can see, the project is not interested in implementing
all XSI bits, only the ones that are easy to support or make sense,
which is not always the case.

Both FreeBSD's old and new TTY layer only partially implement TABDLY. It
supports the simple tab expansion case (TAB3), but not the actual delay.
The same applies to NLDLY and CRDLY.

So even though FreeBSD does not support TAB1 and TAB2, it's even better
than the old case, where we *did* support TAB3, but called it OXTABS.
Running into these kind of problems is just the risk you take when using
 XSI bits.

The patch in the PR looks pretty good, except that it checks all the
flags, except TAB3. You happen to know what's up with that?

Thanks for pointing me to this PR. Be sure to send me any followups if
 in doubt.

 Joe,

Is it safe to say that the patch is approved if the "#ifdef TAB3" is
added? It's unclear from your earlier response what you would like to
do about this. I have a -current machine which can be used for testing
if you do not have access to one.

 Thanks.

Glenn was surprised that it needed a fix. I do not know how to contact
the person you mentioned. You should try to contact them to see if they
really intended for this kind of breakage in 8. Glenn is coming out
with another release soon, and it may or may not have the fix. If it
does include the fix, someone running 8 needs to see if it is really
necessary or not. I do not run 8, so I cannot help out at all.

I would rather wait and see what happens down the road. If you need an
immediate or ongoing fix, I would just do the same thing that I do, just
install my local fix and do not upgrade that particular port unless
 absolutely necessary.

 /Joe

I can confirm that the port is broken on current.

 What local fix?

If you want to wait to see what the next version contains we should at
least mark this port as broken on -current (not sure what OSVERSION to
use, but we can figure that out if necessary) in the interim.

Personally, I would rather see us apply the attached patch to the port
until the new release is out. Ed has already confirmed that the changes
to stty.c look good. I can confirm the patches at least build under
-current and 7.0 - though I can not confirm the runtime behavior.

For the benefit of people running -current we should either mark it as
broken or apply the attached patch.

Glenn Fowler is currently running a beta test of the next release. I
expect that the release will happen within two weeks.

Again, I suggest that you either use an older version of the software or
patch the software yourself on your local machine. When the new release
comes out, you can try it then and see if the patch is present. I does
not seem reasonable to me to institute a patch that will immediately
disappear due to the immenence of the release.

If you want to you can go to the web site and try to current beta
 download. http://www.research.att.com/sw/download/beta/ and look for
 2008-09-26,

 /Joe

I tried out the latest beta (2008-10-10) and it now builds on -current.
Do you know when it will be released? If not soon then please take my
 comments below into consideration...

As it stands now users of this port on -current are not able to build it
because of the issue raised in this PR. Given that the port has been
broken for over a month now we should do something about it until the
new version is released. Can you at least approve marking this port as
BROKEN after the tty changes went in? At least with that done people
won't run into a broken build.

 Glenn,

The uproar over the build of ksh93 on FreeBSD-8.0 is increasing. I have
told everyone that you are working on a new release, but they are
impatient. Can you give me any idea about the release schedule? I
would think that people on a small project like FreeBSD would understand
the problems related to releasing a large thing like ast and ksh with
only three people involved, but I guess not.

It would help me greatly if you could give me a ballpark estimate so
that I can decide what our next step is.

 Thank you.

 /Joe
