>Description:
System was rebooting every night around 3 am.

Found through trial-and-error that the reboot happens whenever 500.ipfwdenied is run as part of daily maintenance.

This is a system that I have modified the kernel & recompiled for SMP support on
>How-To-Repeat:
execute periodic daily or periodic security
>Fix:
edit /etc/defaults/periodic.conf and change "YES" to "NO" for 500.ipfwdenied
under the security section.

You mentioned recompiling your kernel, but not whether or not you are
using modules. You must recompile your modules whenever you rebuild
your kernel, otherwise you may experience this kind of problem.
