I did get it installed but it kept saying device not configured when I tried to set up ppp to dial from cuaa2 which is what my modem jumpers are set to. When I changed the jumpers to cuaa1, because it was saying that port was being set up, the computer locks up at the point it detects hardware on the install. So needless to say I can't install the software.

This sounds like a local configuration problem, not a bug 
in FreeBSD.
