Install an "ASound Express 32-bit PnP" PCI sound card, with the ALS4000 chipset.  The sound is extremely harsh and "clipped" and there's a loud hissing sound too.  Tried adjusting all levels, moving the card, etc to no avail.

Could not reproduce problem and timing it out.  Believe it was due to 
PCI latency being set too small in BIOS on machine in question: other 
users have reported similar problem on different h/w when this was the 
case, though I could not reproduce this with any PCI latency setting 
at home...
