I'm trying to install FreeBSD 2.1 from the Walnut Creek CD onto
a 486 with a NEC IDE CD-ROM.

>Description:

I create the ATAPI boot disk using the CD-ROM without any
problems, the partitioning and the newfs of / seem to go
okay, but when the software is actually supposed to be
extracted from the CD-ROM every extraction fails.

Looking at the ALT-F2 console output, gunzip seemed to
repeatedly complain about an empty file. (Not sure about the
exact error, this was late last night)

I'm confused as to how the CD-ROM could work well enough
to get me as far as I did, and then fail.

With 2.1, I'm not surprised. The ATAPI driver was buggier
than heck! Can you try a newer release of FreeBSD?
