Install clean from the 3.3 BSD. Install X. Use the xf86config shell script to configure X, when offer the choice.

Workaround: use the friendlier XF86Config graphical program instead.

Does this problem still exist with modern versions of FreeBSD?  I 
don't recall ever seeing this problem with xf86config from sysinstall.
