FreeBSD 7.1-RC1 #0: Sun Dec 7 00:38:13 UTC 2008 root@driscoll.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64
>Description:
I have downloaded the ISO image for the 7.1-RC1 (disc1) available here:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/7.1/

I have used the image to make a CD and to boot and install the system on a Dell PowerEdge SC1435 box.

The installation was as follows:
i) select express installation
ii) format the drive and create partitions
iii) select a minimal installation
iv) commit to installation
(drives were formatted and FreeBSD was installed successfully)
v) select additional packages/distributions to install:
man pages, preformatted man pages, doc distribution
These failed to install with errors
vi) postinstallation configuration also worked out successfully (root passoword, additional user, configure the box as an NFS client + SSHD server, configure bge0 interface)
vii) rebooted the box (sucessfully)

So the problem seems to be with the disk ... maybe release candidates don't carry the full-blown set of packages and docs, in which case you can dismiss this PR.

But, if this is indeed a full-blown RC, then if something is broken here, a PR should be issued.

PS: the MD5 checksum of both the ISO image and the burned CD match the one published in the FTP site.

 1. Manpages are present on the FTP server:
 ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/7.1-RC1/manpages/
 2. If the manpages weren't present sysinstall should fail after trying
 to find the sources.

The burned CD does in fact have the catpages, manpages and doc
subdirs, all populated, but I don't know if these files are all that
is needed or if there's anything missing or corrupted:

Fenan,
do you mind to show us the error messages you're seeing?
BTW, with having actually tried the beta ISOs myself (rebuilding
from source, often) I think your media is broken.

hello, had same issue as described with 7.1 on brand new dell inspirion.

first impossible to install via FTP since em0 is now igb0 (saw that on
 errata).
then, after burning a DVD-1, i managed to progress until :

Installation selecting <6> Kern-developper : FAILS when attempting to
 install extra-packages
 error msg :

"Write failure on transfer! wrote -1 bytes of 1425408"

if selecting install Express then "Minimal" AND "Custom" (man pages), it
 works.
(as decribed in this link :
