>Environment:
Install not possible from 5.4-RELEASE iso CD.
>Description:
Using a SuperMicro X6DA8-G2 mainboard w/ dual Xeon Nocona procs, Intel E7525 chipset, which as a subset uses the ICH5R super-I/O chip for SATA drive communications. The 5.4-RELEASE distro doesn't see any attached SATA drives, and as a result the install was not possible on this system. Using a 6-CURRENT snapshot from 15 March 2005, I had no problems with SATA communications (other problems, but I expected that).
>How-To-Repeat:
Try installing 5.4-RELEASE from CD on a SuperMicro X6DA8-G2 mainboard to a SATA HDD. Presuming SuperMicro doesn't change chipsets on later versions of this board, you won't see any attached hard drives to install to.
>Fix:
The 6-CURRENT snapshot from 15 March 2005 sees the SATA drives just fine when installing from CD.

I forgot to mention I'm using the amd64 architecture, if it makes a
 difference.

An additional follow-up, choosing the safe-mode boot option allowed me =
 to
see the HDD and complete the install of 5.4-RELEASE amd64. To further =
 help
your debugging, when attempting the normal boot sequence for =
 installation,
the ATA_IDENTIFY and ATAPI_IDENTIFY commands were timing out on the hard
drive and CD drive, respectively. The hard drive is SATA, the CD drive =
 is on
an old parallel ATA interface, and both drives are masters on their
respective channels. As long as I choose a safe-mode boot, I have no
problems getting the system to run (although the drive performace is
seriously degraded). I'll try messing around with atacontrol to see if I =
 can
fix the problem with a forced ata config.

OK, after compiling a custom kernel, the timeout issues have vanished. =
 It
appears that the generic kernel included with the 5.4-RELEASE amd64 =
 distro
doesn't like the ICH5R controller, but there is a usable workaround in
simply booting with safe mode until you get your kernel compiled. =
 Everything
is purring like a lion... I'm happy as a clam, now...

The latest 5.4-STABLE sources exhibit the same problem--ata(4) doesn't
work properly (device timeout messages during boot) with the ICH5R
SATA controller after compiling with sources retrieved on 13 June
 2005. I found a workaround:

Comment out the "options ATA_STATIC_ID" line from the kernel config
file. After rebooting, you may discover the device mappings for your
partitions are wrong. Get the list of geom managed partitions and edit
/etc/fstab to correct the device mappings.

Please close this bug report. Supermicro provided a new BIOS for the
X6DA8-G2 mainboard that corrected all my problems. Kernel compilation
using the latest STABLE sources works fine, now.
