UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY
ad0: FAILURE - READ_DMA status=51 error=40 LBA=3631807

fsck does not recovers
no vi to edit /etc/rc or fstab
no access to home (single user mode, no su -)

do not know what do to: reinstall? (how do I recover personal data?). please help

I am sorry, this is lacking a lot of information, if you still have this 
problem, please go to the freebsd-questions mailinglist which you can 
find on http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions, 
they can help you do the initial debugging etc. Note that this may be 
because of wrong cabling (40 pins instead of 80 pins, and/or broken 
hardware). Thanks for the willingness to improve FreeBSD, Sorry that it 
took a long time since someone replied!
