My Asus A7V600-X board uses a VT8237 south bridge and a AD1980 "SoundMAX" Codec.

 BTW, my via VT8237 has a sysctl hw.snd.pcm0.spdif_enabled which is off
 by default.
 Did you try turning it on?

We have a spdif sysctl in -current for this. This is supposed to be 
user-controlable with an utility before the code hits -STABLE.
