>Description:

More times a week I experience a "watchdog timeout". It happens when I
start (!) playing mp3's from an external harddisk (da0) and there is
internet activity. It must be said: not always. I have an ASUS M2400N
notebook and the external harddisk is connected via an USB hub.

The only relevant message I could find is:

 kernel: rl0: watchdog timeout

Program mpg123 freezes, no music, the external harddisk is not
accessible anymore and the USB mouse (connected directly; NOT via the
USB hub) stops working. When I leave my GUI session -interactive
programs will be killed- the system is back to normal.

A reboot is neccessary in minor cases when these messages directly follow:

kernel: umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT
kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, TIMEOUT
kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, TIMEOUT

Then the filesystem is not properly dismounted (fsck /dev/da0s2).

Unplugging the USB devices is not a solution as the machine will crash
 in these cases.

Other OS's (WinXP, SUSE LINUX) do not have this problem on the same
machine. So, it is unlikely a hardware failure. But, I very much prefer
FreeBSD. This only problem I face makes my machine unpredictable...

I think it has to do with devices sharing the same interrupt (irq 5).
But, who am I? In my BIOS I cannot change relevant settings. On the
internet I found similar problems, but no solution. Sometimes people
mention that this occurs since release 5.1 or 5.2. Sometimes people use
 other NIC's.

I hope there is a solution.

 Thanks.

Subject: Re: kern/69092: kernel: rl0: watchdog timeout
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2004 12:49:42 +0200

 Dear FreeBSD,

Hereby I send some additional information:

Without the USB hub, and similar behaviour at my side, I have not
experienced any "watchdog timeout". I will inform you if they do happen...

But then I cannot use other USB devices (like Handspring Visor) as I
like the mouse and unmounting the external harddisk everytime is not
handy. My notebook has only two USB ports:

 1. USB mouse
 2. External harddisk (USB)

 in stead of:

 1. USB mouse
 2. External USB hub with: external harddisk, Handspring Visor, ... connected

Removing the USB hub makes /var/run/dmesg.boot like:

uhub0: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered
uhub1: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub1: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered
uhub2: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub2: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered

note that the "Cypress Semiconductor Slim Hub" at uhub1 has gone...

Still I like to use this USB hub. Once again, this hub is not a problem
 in other OS's.

Is it save to conclude that the external harddisk itself is not the problem?

-> Of course, I can try to use the external USB hub for the USB mouse
and other USB devices (NOT the external harddisk). It seems better to me
to give testing without the USB hub more time.

Hope this additional information is of help to you.

 Dear FreeBSD,

Unfortunately, after my previous email, the first "watchdog timeout"
occurred just a few minutes ago. Sad news indeed. :(

 I do not like this:

*Jul 19 16:26:57 FreeBSD kernel: rl0: watchdog timeout*

*Jul 19 16:28:44 FreeBSD kernel: umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT
Jul 19 16:28:44 FreeBSD kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed,
 TIMEOUT
Jul 19 16:28:44 FreeBSD kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed,
 TIMEOUT
 ...*

So, the external USB hub is not the cause (it was not connected).

 Hope this information will help.

 Regards,

 Roy

 Dear FreeBSD,

 Another addition:

This evening I have been playing music from the external harddisk for
 hours without a problem.

Then immediately after I wanted to sync my Handspring Visor (PPP over
USB) another "watchdog timeout"... I pressed the hotsync button on the
 pilot screen as usual.

This was the second one of today. Without a reboot I cannot access the
 external harddisk.

 Regards,

 Roy
