>Description:
3C589D ethernet card works using zp0 (int 10, io 0x300, mem 0xd8000) if
the kernel was compiled without card0.
If zp0 is enabled, pcic0 compiled into the kernel and the card in the
slot, it hangs during bootup after saying 'Enable PC-card.Doing
  initial network setup: hostname.'
If the card is hot-plugged later, it says 'pccardd[45]: driver allocation
  failed for 3Com Corporation'.
If I leave out zp0 completely I get the same result as when hot-plugging.

Other pcmcia cards work ok. I tried every combination of pccard options
in the kernel that i could imagine. I also tried to change
/etc/pccard.conf to use zp0 instead of ep0 for this card or leave
this card allone. I tried to compile without pcic0. I also tried the
generic PCMCIA kernel.
The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra 730CDT.

>How-To-Repeat:
reboot or re-insert the card.
>Fix:
Leave card0 out when compiling the kernel. But then all other pcmcia
card doesn't work anymore... (Adaptec SlimSCSI)
->2 Kernels: one with support for the Ethernet card, and one for the
rest.

You need to update the pccard.conf file. My 3C589D works just fine
(or did last I used it, which was earlier today).

State-Changed-Why:
Pilot error I think. You are not supposed to have either of zp0 or ze0
in a kernel which also has the pccard support.
