There have been sporadic reports of flakiness of the Realtek 8029
"NE2000 clone" network cards on the FreeBSD mailing list. The
symptoms described could have come as a result of bugs in the
particular Realtek card revision, bugs in the
 /usr/src/sys/dev/ed/if_ed_pci.c driver, an incompatibility (like
a mis-clock) on the motherboard, or a problem in the network
 itself.

Please substitute a different network adapter and see if the
problems go away or not. If they do then we know it's likely
not a problem on your network or it's cabling.

From the description given, it would seem that the system is just running
out of mbufs. Could you provide the output of netstat -m after one of
 these hangs has occured?
