On a Compaq Presario, cannot enter userconfig because screen
scrambles on entry to the userconfig utility. It looks as if
"config>" is repeated over and over, and fills the screen
while simultaneously moving at high-speeds from left to right.
Difficult to read. Typing any character on the keyboard
scrambles the screen so badly it is completely unreadable.

 Ain't no such release.

What kind of keyboard is attached? Since you mention the video adapter
in the subject, did you try a different video adapter?

I just made that up :-) Here's what it says upon booting:

 FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE #0 Mon Nov 20 13:02:55 GMT 2000
    jkh@bento.FreeBSD.org:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC

This is an out-of-the-box "Compaq Presario Special Edition" computer. It is
delivered with a USB attached keyboard, and an NVidia TNT2 video adapter.
There are no problems with the keyboard that I can discern. The video
adapter also has no problems *except* when attempting the userconfig
support; otherwise, it works perfectly as a console and X11 support is
 excellent.

See also problem report kern/24958 for other problems with this machine.

 I suspected as much. I don't think userconfig supports USB keyboards;
you'll have to ask on -questions or -hackers (which you should have
done before submitting the PR anyway).

How can lack of USB keyboard support in userconfig cause
the screen to scramble and act as if the monitor loses
 sync?

This problem report was opened *after* searching the gnats
database extensively for any exact or closely similar
problems; none were found. The -questions and -hackers
lists might be good discussion forums, but if a serious
or critical problem hasn't appeared in gnats, it should.
