FreeBSD gw.fosburgh.org 4.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE #0: Tue Nov 28 19:40:52 CST 2000 toor@gw.fosburgh.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/vmunix i386

>Description:
The sound card I am using:

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Nov 28 2000 19:39:48
Installed devices:
pcm0: <AudioPCI ES1371> at io 0xe400 irq 10 (1p/1r channels duplex)

There is an internal sound card that is disabled. I do not know that this problem existed prior to migrating to a different motherboard from one with failing disk controllers.

The problem is that when playing certain sounds (at least mp3's and midi) the system will play the sounds for awhile, possibly to the end, and then the screen will go blank with some vertical lines and the system hangs hard, no keys will work, and the only option is to recycle the system. The problem does not seem to occur with small files like wav.

Although I am running 4.2-RELEASE now, it was also present in 4.1-STABLE (shortly prior to 4.1.1).

>How-To-Repeat:
Play a sound using any (it appears) sound tool, such as mpg123.
>Fix:
Unknown.
