>Environment:

Pentium system based on an Asus P55T2P4 motherboard, rev 2.3, bios
1.08, NCR '825 with bios 3.04 and two SCSI disks and one DAT drive,
Hitachi CDR-7730 ATAPI CD-ROM installed as master on secondary IDE
port, no other IDE devices.

(A system at work with an NEC CDR-280 also has problems, but that'll
be the subject of another PR Monday...)

>Description:

All testing so far done with boot floppies.

Kernel recognizes CD-ROM drive at boot, but attempts to access it with
mount_cd9660 or dd fail with EIO. The drive is not obviously
accessed, as indicated by the front-panel LED. sysinstall reports
error 2 but finds the drive anyway, on its debug screen.

>How-To-Repeat:

Construct system, boot from boot floppy, run fixit, try and use
CD-ROM...

>Fix:

None, but I'm willing to help with testing et al-- the system is a
hacktoy. I may be willing to toss the CD-ROM in an appropriate
direction if needed (btw, I live near Boston, despite the hostname).

I had, esentially, the same problem with 2.2.1-Release (same drive). I
contacted Hitachi and they asked me to contact their BBS to download
some BIOS extender. Their pages say:
 ______________
If you are using OS/2, Windows NT or some other operating system with
your Dell PC, you will need to download our BIOS extender. There is a
version of this available on our BBS.

 	BIOSEXT EXE 47,085 12-4-95 3:36p

Once you download it, the BIOS extender needs to be installed from a
floppy diskette. Be sure to format the floppy diskette freshly first,
and be sure not to format it as a system disk. It must be completely
blank so that all the files on the floppy are contiguous.

      From a DOS Prompt:

           C:\DOWNLOAD> COPY BIOSEXT.EXE A:

           C:\DOWNLOAD> A:

A:> BIOSEXT The files will be extracted onto the floppy.

A:> HITFIX The diskette will be made bootable.

           Boot from this floppy.

You will see a menu asking if you want to install IDEnhancer.
 Press and it
           should say IDEnhancer Installed.

If, after booting, you don't get to this install menu, you have not
started with a completely blank floppy. Maybe there are bad sectors on
that floppy or you started with a system disk. Try using another floppy.

      Other PC Owners:

If you have any PC other than a Dell Dimension PC, we recommend you
contact us to determine whether our BIOS extender is appropriate for
your PC. Failure to make sure it is appropriate for your PC could lead
to complete loss of all data on your hard drive, so be careful, please.

For the record, I have a Compaq Deskpro/i, and it seems like I shouldn't
 install this.
