when doing:
# uname -a
FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT #4: Fri Jun 10 01:30:12 UTC 2011 @:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PAE_KES i386

you can see that this kernel was build on Fri Jun 10 01:30:12 UTC 2011
but from which sources it was compiled you do not know. For example I
can fetch srouces on Jan 01 and compile them at Jun.

I think it will be beter to see that info instead of build date or they
will complement each other

If you build from SVN and have SVn installed it includes the exact
 revision.
