Connected in wireless with a AR9280 chipset, the net/mDNSResponder is not able to resolve/discover anything using multicast DNS. 

Futher testing using tcpdump (tcpdump -i wlan0 ip and udp and port mdns) showed the requests (out packet to 224.0.0.251.mdns), but no answers from remote hosts. I suppose from this that it is a networking problem rather than an application bug.

Moreover, another FreeBSD laptop (7.2 with an intel wireless card) successfuly captured the answer the main laptop never received. I guess I cannot blame the Access Point.

Disabling the wireless interface and connecting the laptop to the network with its ethernet port also worked, remote multicast message were captured with tcpdump.

Using a laptop with an AR9280 chipset, connect to a network. We also need a remote host able to send multicast messages. Example of problematic application is multicast DNS (net/mDNSResponder or net/avahi-app can be used).

Of course, if the test is with multicast DNS, ensure that the implementation daemons are running.

Start tcpdump to monitor the network on the laptop, and on the other host.

Start a multicast dns query (dns-sd -G v4 <host> or avahi-resolve-host-name -4 <host>) from the laptop.

Message from the laptop can be seend, but not those from the other host.

 The multicast code should work; all kinds of strange things fail if
 multicast handling is broken.
 
 Can you please compile the driver with "options ATH_DEBUG" and then
 enable mode change debugging:
 
 sysctl dev.ath.X.debug=0x40
 
 Then start your interface and report what's logged in dmesg.

 I don't have a ready 8-Current partition on this laptop (7 would not work I guess, support for the AR9280 came with 8.1/8.2), but I can upgrade if necessary (with FreeBSD 9 around the corner, I'm not to worried about destabilizing this setup).
 
 Meanwhile, I compiler a generic + ATH_DEBUG kernel. More strange things begin to happen :
 * A boot/for some time after wlan0 creation/setup, multicast (or at least, using the mdns addresses) do work, I was able to receive some with and without capture with tcpdump (who showed the capture).
 * I left the capture going on, and tried periodicaly to make some mdns queries. After a few minutes, I was again in the situation described in the report.
 
 I've attached the dmesg output from interface setting to the point I noticed the bug again.

 I dumped the log as soon as I noticed I wasn't receiving multicast anymore, but I do see that there was no changes in the log messages after I started the capture (at this time, I was still receiving multicast message).
 
 I am a bit puzzled here, it seems that the multicast do work by intermitance, but I'm unable at this time to confirm what triggers the problem. Next week, I will try to do a small server/client couple that send/recv multicast message and logs with timestamps...
