FreeBSD charlie.bblocked.org 7.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE #0: Tue Jun 9 19:51:56 PDT 2009 root@charlie.bblocked.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/kern01 i386
>Description:
After installing a D-Link DWL-G520 (Atheros 5212 chipset) on FreeBSD-7.2 my computer would hang during the boot process just after probing the new wireless card. I then removed the card and compiled a custom kernel without the ath driver, rebooted, and attempted to load the driver module with kldload if_ath. This produced the same result as having the driver built into the kernel.

Here is a log of the error:

FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE (kern01) #0: Tue Jun 9 19:51:56 PDT 2009
[root@charlie ~]# kldload if_ath
ath0: <Atheros 5212> mem 0xf8100000-0xf810ffff irq 20 at device 0.0 on pci5
ath0: [ITHREAD]

-------8<-------

After this the system becomes unresponsive to all user input. The system runs fine until an attempt to load the ath driver is made.

The card works fine in another computer running FreeBSD 7.1.
>How-To-Repeat:
Load if_ath.ko with an Atheros 5212 card installed, while using a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard.

State-Changed-Why:
Joshua, can you please compile a WITNESS enabled kernel and see if you
get output?
Also please attach information about your device (pciconf -lv output).

Sorry to be so tardy to respond.

I talked with the motherboard maker (Gigabyte) and it appears it is a
hardware conflict and isn't isolated to FreeBSD. I guess just a false alarm.
