>Description:
Trying to install FreeBSD 7.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 2850 causes a kernel panic just after the GEOM_LABEL messages during boot.

I'm unable to capture the exact output at the moment. This mailing list thread below shows the exact same problem.

http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/stable/2008-02/msg00454.html

I did not find anything similar when searching through the PR's for kernel panic.

Here is a lspci from the machine running Linux. I'm going to try installing FreeBSD 6.3 on it next to see how that works out.

Anything else useful to provide ?

Wiping the drives using a 6.3 install bypasses the problem. Afterwards
a CD install of 7.0 works fine.

To submitter: Out of interest, what was in the disks before you attempted
to install FreeBSD for the first time? Is there any chance you have saved
a copy of the panic text (specifically, to begin with, the line beginning
"instruction pointer =")? Lastly, were you trying to install the i386 or
the amd64 port of FreeBSD?

There was an install of linux on the drives originally which was setup
in a LVM I believe. It looked like FreeBSD detected this with
GEOM_LABEL messages for each partition then crashed immediately after.
The mailing list link I included is for the most part an exact replica
 of what happened.

I had the problem with both i386 and amd64 ports and did not write down
the messages. I may have another system to try this on and will update
the PR then if it is still open.

This looks to be a GEOM problem, possibly with geom_label. Over
