after creating a bootable SATA drive on a different machine (GENERIC kernel without modifications, SMP enabled) I was unable to successfully boot into a quad-core Intel with ASUS P5N-D motherboard (uses NVidia chipset, specifically NVidia nForce MPC51 IDE and SATA controllers).  After trying just about every possible BIOS configuration to get it to work, the only thing I was able to do was to disable SMP by the use of 'hint.apic.0.disabled' from the bootloader prompt (option 6) as referred to by an on-line mailing list post from October 2006 (dealing with the same hardware but earlier version of FBSD).  On a side note, if I use a separate PCI SATA controller card, FreeBSD 6.1 can read the drive, but has problems writing (possibly because of the PCI SATA controller - it may have different problems in FBSD).  In all cases that I tested, the on-board controller doesn't function UNLESS you disable SMP.

This problem occurs with the FreeBSD 7.0 setup CD as well.

Once SMP is disabled the system appears to function correctly as a single-CPU system.

Worth noting - when I used the PCI SATA controller and disabled the on-board controller, I got a timeout error for ATA_IDENTIFY (I think that was it) with 7.0 and 6.3 , booting from the installation CD.
>How-To-Repeat:
1.  Insert FreeBSD 7 CD (I used the 'live filesystem' version, but you should be able to reproduce it with the installation CD disk 1)

2.  Boot from CD

3.  Note that once in sysinstall, no drives are detected.

4.  Boot from CD again, this time selecting option '6' to enter the bootloader prompt

5.  enter the command "set hint.apic.0.disabled=1" at the bootloader prompt, then enter "boot' to complete system startup

6.  Note that from sysinstall the drives are detected.

>Fix:
The only known fix at this time is a workaround:  place "hint.apic.0.disabled=1" into the device.hints file so that SMP is not enabled.

 Built kernel without SMP enabled, but APIC was still included in the
 kernel (and enabled).  Problem persists. 'show alllocks' at the
 'mountroot' prompt shows sys/kern/vfs_mount.c line 727 owning the giant
 lock (exclusive sleep mutex Giant r = 0) [not sure if this is helpful or
 not].

 Problems appear to be related to APIC and APIC configuration.  Boot 
 without ACPI either hangs (AMD64) or does not set up the keyboard 
 interrupts (so no keyboard input) (i386).  Apparently APIC will not set 
 up properly without the ACPI tables.  The ACPI tables may actually be 
 wrong, or might actually point to where the problem is.

 execution of timer interrupt callbacks by printing a message once every 
 4096 times that the function is called.  The test code was inserted as

 a) just prior to the point of failure (when disk access is being 
 attempted), only CPU #0 is calling the ISR, and the ISR appears to be 
 invoked approximately 2000 times per second.  Divider value is assigned 
 to a value of '66666' or '66667' (same value for all 4 CPUs).
 
 b) at the actual point of failure (ATA drives not detected) it appears 
 as if there are still timer callbacks being invoked.  Drive detection 
 takes place after the 'firewire' setup message and before the additional 
 CPUs are initialized.
 
 c) once the 'mountroot' prompt appeared, only a single CPU (varies each 
 time I retried) received timer interrupts.  These timer interrupts 
 appear to be taking place 4 times as often (is this because of the 4 CPU 
 cores?)
 
 d) after pressing <ENTER> at 'mountroot' and getting the 'db' prompt, 
 entering 'continue' allowed the other CPUs to get their timer interrupts 
 prior to system restart.

 thanks - FYI I'm down to the point where I need to look at wiring 
 diagrams and chipset docs if I were to continue doing things myself. 
 Last month or so I've had no time so no progress either.  I sent a 
 support request to Asus for grins, got the 'door slam' (not even a 
 'reject' e-mail) when they simply closed the request.  At this point I 
 think the ACPI configuration for the APIC is wrong, maybe even int 2. 
 Without a wiring diagram there's no way to tell.  Hopefully someone has 
 contacts at ASUS for that info.  It could also be a unique protocol 
 between APIC and LAPIC, requiring additional setup and/or additional 
 steps during ISRs.  Without the docs that's not possible to determine 
 either.
 
 In any case I read the docs on setting up a "substitute ACPI BIOS" to 
 include with the kernel during startup and may go that route first with 
 my own attempts at testing.
 
 The LAPIC timer happening 4 times more frequently than it should 
 (meaning all 4 LAPICs are generating timer interrupts but the CPUs still 
 'round robin' the handling?) seems a little unusual to me.  Do you think 
 this is at the core of the problem?

 I'll check it out.  It can't hurt to download and test-boot a CD as long 
 as it doean't destroy my file system.  If 8.0 works I'll see if I can't

 6.3 CD had the same problem as well, last I tried.  Also DL'd the 8.0
 livefs CD from the 200807 directory (8.0-CURRENT-200807-i386-livefs.iso)
 and it also had the same problem.  The latest Linux kernel (that I
 tried) also has a very very similar problem (I think it was 2.6.18).  So
 it's not something that isn't common throughout the open source OS world.
 
 
 On a related note...
 
 I have made the following additional observation and am attempting to 
 prove or disprove whether this is responsible.  The ACPI tables list IRQ 
 9 as being level triggered HIGH, whereas the "no APIC" boot log shows 
 IRQ 9 as being level triggered LOW (assigned by 'atpic').  I do not know 
 whether this is a problem in the ACPI table or the interpreter, but I 
 shall investigate this one further.  IRQ 9 (as I recall) affects 
 everything with a higher IRQ number on ISA platforms since if feeds from 
 the 2nd PIC.  So if keyboard and serial work ok, but the disk drives do 
 not, that might explain why.

 Conclusion:  It appears that interrupts are NOT being serviced at all 
 through the APIC/LAPIC.  Timers, however, ARE being serviced (but at a 
 rate that is equal to a single CPU but for all 4 CPUs, so that 4 times 
 as many timer interrupts are being serviced than for a single CPU).
 
 
 Other debugging effort, such as determining whether interrupts are even 
 being set up correctly, suggests that the code is operating as designed 
 and there are no apparent code design problems or code flow problems 
 that might be causing this problem.
 
 Conclusion:  It appears that there is an APIC/LAPIC configuration step 
 that is either missing or incorrect (such as an incorrect memory address 
 or a register that is not being assigned properly) that is the cause of 
 this particular problem.

 I am attempting to do what I can to help to locate and/or correct this 
 particular problem.  I have also personally attempted to contact ASUS 
 through their customer support web site and the response I received was 
 the electronic equivalent of a door slammed in my face.  They canceled 
 the problem request and didn't even respond by e-mail that they had done it.
 
 As such, if anyone out there has ANY board or NVidia chipset 
 documentation that might be helpful, please attach it to this bug report 
 (or send it to me directly).  Specifically I'm looking for a wiring 
 diagram or register map that's specific to the NVidia chipset (and not 
 the APIC/LAPIC as a whole - I already have that for Intel - NVidia may 
 NOT be following the Intel spec 100%).  Also, information (such as 
 APIC/LAPIC register base addresses) from a working system (even one 
 running windows) could be very helpful if the problem is a result of 
 problems in the ACPI BIOS tables.
