>Description:
I have one Dell PowerEdge SC1435 Server. I already run FreeBSD 6.2 and
6.3 on that server (and everything works fine), but, when I try to install
FreeBSD 7.0 (i386 or amd64), I can't install (got HDD error). Already
changed media disc and tryed to install via FTP. When copying files (doc
distribution), I got HDD erros. If I don't install doc distribution, got
HDD errors on other packages. Sometimes, I can install minimum distribution
set (and sometimes I got the same HDD errors). Already changed HDD. The
guys from Dell came here and changed motherboard, network card, and
performed bios and devices upgrade. Got the same errors. Now, the server
is running (minimal distribution installed). I don't thinkg it's hardware
problem cause the server runs ok with FreeBSD 6.2/6.3 and I already
performed all hardware diagnostics from Dell.

When I try to start sshd, I got:

testhost# /etc/rc.d/./sshd start
/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /lib/libcrypto.so.5: Unsupported relocation type 171060785
 in non-PLT relocations

/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /lib/libcrypto.so.5: Unsupported relocation type 171060785
 in non-PLT relocations

/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /lib/libcrypto.so.5: Unsupported relocation type 171060785
 in non-PLT relocations

I started telnetd on that server. When try to connect via telnet, got:

[root@r01 /usr/home/felipe]# telnet 189.xx.xx.x
Trying 189.xx.xx.x...
Connected to 189.xx.xx.x.
Escape character is '^]'.
/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /lib/libcrypto.so.5: Unsupported relocation type 171060785 in non-PLT relocations

Connection closed by foreign host.

Here is the dmesg result: http://www.neuwald.biz/files/fbsd7.0-dell_poweredge_sc1435-dmesg.txt
>How-To-Repeat:
Try to install FreeBSD 7.0 (i386 or amd64) on a Dell PowerEdge SC 1435 machine.

State-Changed-Why:

Do you have by any chance world binaries installed using the wrong arch?
To me it looks like arch of kernel and world do not match.
Can you try a clean install on a fresh disk, please and check if the problem
goes away?

also see PR 123495

relevant information from PR 123495:

Hardware:
Dell SC1435, twin Hitachi UltraStar 750 GB SATA-II drives plugged right
into the mobo with SATA-II cables. For completeness, the system also has
1 dual-core AMD Opteron, 2 GB RAM, and a SCSI card plugged into it.

FBSD 6.x AMD64 works great on this system, as does centos linux. When I
try to install 7.0 (AMD64 of course), on boot (off the cdrom) I notice:
ad4: DMA limited to UDMA33, device found non-ATA66 cable

Not sure if that is an important clue but it seems to be. I know my cables
are SATA-II, FWIW.

Install jams along nicely until it actually tries to write distributions
to the drives. The format piece works well w/o errors that I have seen.
To use my example, as soon as it started writing the base system to the
drive it started erroring out. Here is a piece of what I captured:
...
./usr/sbin/spkrtest
./usr/sbin/srpay
NMI ISA 30, EINSA Mlf fI
SA 20, EISA ff
NMI ISA 30, EISNAM If ISfA
20, EISA ff
ad4: TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA retrying (1 retry left) LBA=34170879
aNMI ISA 30, EISAN fMfl
ISA 30, EISA ff

This is exactly what was coming out on the console, including case
changes. Note that I had to type this in by hand. I tried to make sure
there were no typos but I am an inperfect being. ;>

The timeouts and NMI's continued ad nauseatum. The LBA was always different.

It seems some things may not have gotten displayed properly. For example,
the second error line seems like it should start with "ISA", not "SA". I
fiddled with the monitor settings wondering if something was being chopped
off to no effect. May be the vid chip. <shrug>

This is repeatable at any time.

 Same problem here.

6.3/amd64 is now downloading, will try to get a verbose boot.

This post suggests it's in the acpi.
 http://anothersysadmin.wordpress.com/2007/11/15/problems-with-sata-disks-and-dell-pe-sc1435-how-to-fix/

If anyone's working on this, please let me know, what information you want
from 6.3, since writing to disk doesn't work for 7.0.

If necessary, I can upgrade in place to 7.x, but if the driver isn't working,
then hmm. I haven't looked at the disk config and such yet, but maybe I can
get a dual boot going to test any patches.

Below is the verbose boot under 6.3-p1.

 ACPI aml is at:
 http://freebsd.pastebin.org/35656

There's a second bootable slice waiting to be formatted for 7-stable, if
someone wants to pick it up. I don't know for how long the machine is
 available for non-production work.

        - 7.0-STABLE-200806 (amd64, didnt try i386)

   8.0-CURRENT-200806/amd64 (didn't try i386) works OK

I upgraded this machine from source to RELENG_7 this week and it hosed the
disk, with multiple WRITE_DMA and NMI's in /var/log/messages. I was unable to
get a verbose boot before it totally stopped working. So it's not just the
 install, it's acpi and/or SATA related. [1]
However, this is good information. Is there any way to identify, what was
fixed in -current that makes it work? I'm happy to try any MFC patches once
it's back on RELENG_6 (probably today). I'll reserve a bootable slice for it.
For example, could you (Mars) post a verbose boot?

[1] I have a second machine that is totally different (i386/Gateway/ich5/Intel
HTT/SATA-150) that had the same install problem and an in place upgrade
changed the FreeBSD 6 'ad4' to 'ad16', so we went with UDMA disk instead.

Jahh, i think I experienced the adX name change (just hafta correct
/etc/fstab, then reboot) sometime when I was in 6.X, I think other
folks have reported this too. But this is a separate issue (I think)
 ;-)

 Thanks.

 Hi Guys,

I'm also seeing this problem (cant install 7.0/i386 on Dell SC1435),
however if i disable ACPI in the kernel it does install.

Is their anything I can contribute to help solve this problem ?

 Hi Mark,

It's working ok if you disable ACPI in the kernel? I'll try to test here.

No changes in Bios, hardware or anything other then source upgrade to 6.4.
Looks like the bug is fixed at least in 6.4, which gives me hope for 7.1, but
unfortunately, I can't take this machine out of commission to test it.

 Hello all,

Can someone revisit this bug and confirm the status ? It looks like a
maintainer has not reviewed this since May 2008.

Should we open a new PR and link it to this one ? Some recommend that
course of action when a PR appears abandoned.

On the FreeBSD-stable list there has been reports that an out-of-band
patch provided by a freebsd developer has resolved the issue.

 http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2008-October/045923.html

 http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2008-October/046221.html

However it appears this has not made it into FreeBSD-7.1-BETA2

 http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2008-October/046270.html

My own personal experience confirms the reports above.

I'd prefer we not do that as it just creates more work for the bugbusting
 team.

Unfortunately I don't personally have the resources to work on this
 problem.

This is now fixed. It was the HT1000 SATA issue and the patch is in 7.x
and 6.x. I'm not sure if 7.1 has the fix, but 7.2 definitely will have it.
